Realistic QB situation

Yesterday just wasn’t a fun watch. I don’t care for the 5pm start. Rain delay. Team was very flat and uninspired. Joe made some bad throws, receivers made some bad drops. It was clear that Joe has been told to avoid running unless it’s by design—I saw a handful of times he could have taken off instead of forcing throws.

Now, far as starting Nico: can’t get behind it. Joe looked sloppy last game, but I challenge you to find a coach in the country that benches the starter after a win—especially one in which they had no INTs or fumbles.

But let’s just say that Nico does start and completely ***** the bed. Then what? Do you go back to Milton? Do you accept the fate of the season maybe getting bowl eligible? On top of that, you’ve sent the message to the team and anyone considering UT that one sloppy performance will cost you your job.

Once you pull Milton outside of injury or up/down big you don’t go back.
We’ve seen the Ainge/Clausen and Crompton/Stephens indecisiveness. You ride him as long as he wins and as long as he gives the best chance to win.

Please correct me if I'm wrong. Is Milton undefeated at UT while starting a game and finishing a game? I believe Vols would've ended up beating Pitt in Knoxville 2 seasons ago if Milton wasn't pulled for Hendon Hooker.
Haha

"Down", from Hendon and Hyatt? No way. It's not like UT is an established powerhouse program that has had multiple consecutive top 3 recruiting classes. Some of y'all got last seasons results twisted and thought we'd have the #1 offense every year.
No duh we won’t improve vs last year. But heupel has had a “good” offense every year. The up tempo offense cannot function without 3rd down conversions. And our elite running game will be bottled up if we can’t compete a pass longer than 10 yards.

It’s astounding to me all the people on here who have been watching football for a month and are buying the nonsense that a freshman can never play well. We won ten games Ainge’s freshman year; he beat UF, and he beat UGA when they were ranked #3 in the country. I was hopeful Milton would prove those of us who said last year that he didn’t have what it takes to be a starter in the SEC wrong; it sounds unfortunately like that might not happen. It makes zero sense to keep playing him just because he can throw far if he can’t do the more important stuff like anticipate throws, read coverages, be accurate, etc.

Milton is playing like he’s still looking over his shoulder and that’s gonna get him eventually pulled. He’s been sat at everyplace he’s been and it’s like having PTSD. He MAY not get over it. Hopefully he will. Next week will be the test because it’s considered a “big game”. This is something he’ll either get through or he won’t. Lack of confidence and mental block is a mofo to get through. I’ve coached players that have the ability physically but mentally can’t hack it. Doesn’t make them a bad person, it’s just there’s ones that can and ones that can’t. If it was easy we’d all be playing quarterback.

If I had one suggestion for Milton is quit dancing around and smiling trying to convince yourself and others that you’ve got this because right now you don’t. You over throw and throw behind consistently. You are what you are, quit fooling yourself, get pissed and trust yourself.

I remember when I started training to fly airplanes. Landing without boldering onto the runway is hard to do when you’re learning how. When I would turn final and line up to the runway and start worrying about a bad landing, guess what would happen….a bad landing. You’ve gotta get pissed and fly the airplane, don’t let the airplane fly YOU, YOU FLY THE AIRPLANE!!!!

I was at the game yesterday and saw every pass attempt. He’s struggling folks. Yeah and I realize at times he didn’t have any help but he’s got to fly the airplane, he’s the captain.

Milton is 4-0 with no turnovers since taking over. But the offensive production is down, especially on 3rd down. In a those games we are converting less than 25% vs Clemson and 3 overmatched opponents. I don’t see Milton all of a sudden completing a great % of downfield throws. Do we just live with that?

Nico isn’t physically ready, especially with an OL that is struggling to protect the QB. When do we throw him out there anyway (like Bray or Dobbs)?

Moore is a walk-on but likely able to make some throws Milton is misfiring on.

This 3 way decision may be Heupel’s biggest so far.
" Milton was 0-of-4 on passes between 10 and 19 yards downfield and 1-of-4 of passing of more than 20 yards downfield."

This is a BIG issue! I am not saying what is causing the issue, but it is a big issue!

Joe was bad at the start - started out 1 of 7 or 1 of 8. A few overthrows and few thrown behind - maybe 1 that was flat out dropped that wasn't behind the receiver where a trailing defender could impact the catch.
If a ball hits a WR in the hands, he needs to catch it. There is no such thing as a "Bad Ball" if you get your hands on it, you need to find a way. Thats what big time players do. I guarantee you Harrison Jr from OSU would have caught everything in a 1ft radius of his body. Yes Joe has overthrows but open your eyes, WRs need to do the most important part of their job. CATCH IT.

This is a bad take. There’s a reason why commentators always marveled at Brady’s ball placement when he was playing: it makes a damn big difference. Saying someone should catch a ball that his momentum is taking him away from doesn’t make it magically suddenly be something other than a feat opposed to physics, which it is; simply saying they should catch it is not realistic. Pro wideouts commonly drop balls that are more than a few inches behind them simply because they have to defy physics to do otherwise. It’s the quarterback’s job to put the ball where they have a reasonable chance to catch it. If Milton can’t, he shouldn’t be playing.

We need our WRs to catch balls that hit them in the hands. Joe wasn’t bad yesterday. He had a few overthrows but I counted 6 balls the Wrs flat out dropped.
Yeah, everything other than the muffed punt went AP's way. I normally don't complain about the officiating, but that was terrible. I'm confident that our passing game will be fine.

There isn't a QB situation, at least not yet. Right now I'm telling the receivers to catch the ball. If you have to stop, slow down, whatever, catch the ball. A lot of times they're already at/past the 1st down marker...or have a lot of field in front of them. And I think it'd help Joe's game mentally.

As for Joe, I wish he had a clock in his head. He's so committed to throwing it.....he'll give up a sack, when he should've taken off long ago.

Realistically, what choice do we really have over who plays? It's up to the coaches and if they feel he is best, then I trust them.
They voted Joe Offensive player of the game VS Virgina and VS Austin Peay so to them he is doing a lot right. Heupel said today a few things were a little off and the adjustments needed are not that big. He is not panicking like this board.

That is not true. There were 2-3. You want to use that old adage if you touch it you should catch it. That is bs. I‘m not a Milton hater so i fell comfortable calling it like i sWe it. There was at least one catch where the receiver caught a ball that could have been incomplete.

Horrible take. Go back to sleep until the brown liquor wears off.
