“Sampson playing time” is very simple — Sampson is a very good back, but Jaylen Wright is a monster right now.I think a big part of the lack of Sampson playing time is scheme. We want to be able to possibly run the entire offensive possession without subbing. When Sampson is in the game it limits our ability to run some of our most successful run calls because he is not good running between the tackles. Plus they don't trust him with his pass protection.
The good news is Wright had similar shortcomings early in his career. Look at his development! Sampson will get there.
Only got to watch bits, as the bar in SC only played Cocks and Tarholes games. His two best runs were not designed runs. With 2:10 left in the first half (Lane’s second holding) he was flushed out and took off. He trucked Cooper (the top MLB in the SEC) and took him out of the game. The first play of the 4th quarter was not a designed run either. He flat out trucked an A&M defender near our sideline. He did have 4 or 5 designed draws that were very effective.
Some of his issues yesterday were effort and awareness. Those are controllable, and he (and his receivers, frankly) just didn’t live up to the effort level the rest of the team gave yesterday.Joe has always been inconsistent in games. He can be much better and needs to be. But it's hard to know what you're going to get from him live. And the receivers need to make some of the hard catches, too. They can't count on getting the PI calls.
Yep. I think Joe's due for a really good game. I hope it's UGA. Our odds are always better in Neyland. Some of his issues yesterday were effort and awareness. Those are controllable, and he (and his receivers, frankly) just didn’t live up to the effort level the rest of the team gave yesterday.
From someone that desperately wants to Joe to succeed here and in the NFL, that was really disheartening.
I think most that ask for Sampson to play more are talking about him getting all of Small's carries.
Agree with all of this.Everybody is in a big ole hurry to toss a true freshman out into SEC football. I understand that Joe is not Hendon Hooker and he never will be. He looked better against SC and will look better against the rest of our comp. The AM DL is a monster and we just ran the ball down their throats. Just enjoy being 5-1 everyone. We are a solid team but we have some weaknesses. That is who we are this year and the coaches will do what they can to minimize those weaknesses. Just sit back and enjoy being 5-1. Lots of other teams that aren't 5-1 would've to be in our shoes. Go read the SC or AM boards if you doubt it.
Heupel is paid to win games. He is going to play whomever he thinks has the best chance of winning each specific game. Why some of you just can't wrap your head around this is beyond my comprehension. That is not to say he can't be wrong. He admitted he made a lot of bad calls yesterday. But, unlike some of the previous hardheaded lickwads we have had as coaches, he learns from his mistakes.I agree the notion it’s a get a bowl year is garbage. Huepel can leave if he’s coaching for that. If that’s the case just play Nico and that’s your excuse. Sec is right in front of us. Joe off the bench is better than joe starting. We have to get the ball
Downfield to win this game.
