Errybody pining for the backup QB. A tale as old as time. When Nico has his struggles next year, and he will, some of you same people will be jumping up and down to give Jake Merklinger a try.
Are you seriously ok with the QB play from that game?

And Nico isn’t just the backup he’s by far the highest rated QB UT had recruited in the modern era, and Joe is a 6th year SR. still making freshmen level mistakes.

Equating their struggles (hypothetical in Nicos case) is a little disingenuous as one would be seeing his first action while the other is on his third chance at starting.

I don’t think Nico should be trotted out to start his first game in Denny’s Stadium, but another performance like that from Joe and it might be worth seeing if Nico can at least lead his receiver on an in route vs UK.

But dude

Nico would go in there and dice Bama up with guys like Chas Nimrod and Ramel Drops Keyton! Those few snaps against UVA and UTSA's scrubs proves he's ready to win in Tuscaloosa! What could possibly go wrong benching the most beloved guy on a 5-1 team going into a rivalry game?

Potentially unpopular take: I’m glad Milton is serving as a mentor and stopgap for Nico. Joe is a good dude and bleeds for this team. He’s not Hooker but he can be serviceable with the right game plan (i.e. run first, pass second). Most true freshman QBs need education and guidance. Nico is getting that from Joe.

Here is a blatant PI no-call in the first quarter. DB grabs and holds Nimrod's arm before the ball arrives. A call there likely results in us scoring. Instead we have the play where Joe is indecisive and throws out of bounds on fourth down. That play would have never happened. This is at 24:35 on Freak's replay.

Danielson, who watches multiple cameras the whole time (he does not watch the play directly) HAS to see this. What he does is to tell the viewer to blame Joe. It was a nice touch pass. But Danielson says it was thrown late and Joe should have rocketed it in there. Meaning, if anyone stopped to think about what he was suggesting, that the ball should have been a rope without touch. If that had been the case it would have been a fault, and Gary would have told the viewer that instead. Then Brad says "the Tennessee fans" want PI. As if that is merely a biased view. You can hear the boos.

When they finally show us the view that Gary has had the whole time, we immediately see that the DB has his hand around Nimrod's wrist and is pushing his arm away from the ball, leaving Nimrod one-handed and making a catch impossible. Clear PI no-call in the endzone.

I think no one even talked about this much because Danielson had played to prejudice and convinced the viewer it was Joe's fault. A nice way to dodge the PI at the spot.View attachment 587306View attachment 587307
This is simply terrible defense by the DB and he gets REWARDED for it. He did not look back for the ball and made contact that clearly impacted the WR's ability to catch the ball and that dipshit ref could not possibly have missed seeing it. Criminal.

Those aren’t mutually exclusive though. No one has said the QB play yesterday was at a high level, but that doesn’t mean you replace him either. Common sense.

I’m not sure fans will ever understand that coaches play their personnel that they think gives them the best chance to win. It doesn’t mean they think their players are perfect. But there are many variables that go into it- play calls, physical skills, confidence from teammates, etc. As a freshman, Nico will make mistakes, and if the coaches think he will make more than Milton, then they go with their best option. An extra mistake can cost is games with how we are playing. Automatically asking for the backup is just not logical to me.
