Well now it’s obvious why that was called. Nick put it in their ear when he saw that
in the first half, and they were happy to oblige.

You know what a competent, fair-minded official says when Nick brings that up? Here ya go:

“You think an up-back is signaling a fair catch as soon as the ball is kicked? Get real, coach.”
i wish the SEC stood up and answered questions like the Big Ten did.

That is even more ridiculous than the refs saying Dee's signal was the cause. How on earth does an up man signal have anything to do with the play unless it is a pooch kick. Just an excuse for the refs to help Alabama and screw TN. Win-win for the crooked refs.
The video clearly shows that no Bama player responded in any way to what Telander did, slight as it was, and at a time the ball had long passed him.

To @rikberry31 (because I can’t quote your post): I understand the distinction, but I don’t see much of a difference, ultimately.

Whether a doctor botches your surgery because he was grossly incompetent or someone paid him off, you’re dead either way due to someone else’s malfeasance.

And also, if the SEC continues to knowingly employ incompetent officials and make no effort to improve that element of the game, that’s just corruption of a different kind.
I agree the ends are the same. The difference being incompetence is bad, corruption is evil. Killing someone in an accident that you caused is bad, killing them by planting a bomb in their car is evil. The persons responsible should not be treated the same.

Maybe, and I have my theories on the motives behind this stuff, but ultimately it just doesn’t matter to me. We’ve gotten a bad whistle in basically all of our games except maybe one or two, an indisputably and particularly bad whistle. It shouldn’t be tolerated by our administration or any of the others in this league on the wrong side of it, regardless of the cause.
I think I may be coming around to you view in the interest of cutting the legs out from under the people trying to pawn off the canard about the backstory.

With the modification (or not?) that unaddressed "incompetence" of this duration and effect on outcomes not having been addressed does imply at least acquiescence in the people in Birmingham who supervise officials and the people who supervise the supervisors.

Perhaps coincidence is in play with the officiating. Alabama averaging 9 penalties a game. This game they get one “penalty” for snap infraction that actually prevents a loose ball in the backfield. After being down at the half Bama scores a touchdown while Baron is choked rushing the passer. Ensuing kickoff the weirdest “fair catch” penalty is called moving the ball to the 4 yard line. A lot of coincidences.
A lot better explanation than some wacky Q conspiracy level theory about SEC not letting Bama lose.

I love Joe but he isn't getting drafted as a QB and unless he moves to tight end I'm not sure he get offered much of a chance in the NFL.
First, I 100% agree. It is funny though the Titans just took a smaller, less athletic QB with probably worse arm "talent" and similar accuracy issues. About the same stats and same age as well.

I wouldn't put it past some NFL GM seeing Milton throw it in shorts similar to mayo man and snatching him way too early.

Well, he controls scheduling, fines, sanctions, officiating, bowl assignments, etc. I suppose unless there is a known majority of schools on board in advance, it would be viewed as self destructive by most schools.
So schools are afraid of him...the Saban running the SEC probably true..but when he retires there will be a new Saban most likely Kirby Smart...it's a revolving door of manipulators...Jimmy Johnson use to say...Never let the officials determine the outcome of the game...and we know his Miami teams had the deck stacked on them every game they played...they were hated by all...

Looks like he is pointing to what side the ball is going to
Unless they specify (retroactively) the earlier moment when Telander raised (not over his head) his right hand. You can see that -- and the non-reaction by Bama -- if you zoom in on the photo I posted at #30,918 and then zoom back out and look at the coverage team.

But if there was a flag, how did the broadcast team never see it and talk about the flag and which official had thrown it and what that likely meant? That is the normal case. If there was a flag in the vicinity of Telander, why did they start telling a story about Dee? Who, if anyone, threw a flag? And why did the officials permit all that mayhem to proceed after the whistle: also makes no sense.

The video clearly shows that no Bama player responded in any way to what Telander did, slight as it was, and at a time the ball had long passed him.

I honestly don't know which would be worse. The refs are just blatantly crooked and the fix was in for bama from the jump of the 2H since it looked like we had the upper hand in the game. Or that the refs are just that incredibly incompetent and have been for years, but the leagues just choose not to take action to fix the problem and let games be decided by incompetent morons instead of the actual players competing.

If I said it’s more likely that Saban was hounding the officials the entire first quarter, and all these officials know that Saban is very influential in this league, that he has the ear of Greg Sankey, and that he was publicly miffed for a half a seson about the officiating in our game last year, and their future assignments might hinge on not getting an angry phone call from Sankey this week, would you find that a more likely explanation?

Would you find it acceptable?

Why would anyone attempt to return a kickoff in today's game in the first place? I can't remember anyone who has even making it back to the 25 yard line. I'm not saying it wasn't a BS call. I'm just curious why someone would is all.
