Recruiting Football Talk VII

It may be that Boise St offered him the world. Their AD is wanting something brand new, and big...

"An idea floating around the Mountain West Conference calls for the creation of a multi-tiered conference or alliance of leagues that would use a promotion-and-relegation system akin to what is done in European soccer. Yahoo Sports first reported the existence of the proposal and Front Office Sports obtained the detailed presentation of a plan put together by Boise State associate athletic director Michael Walsh."

Idk, I'm just spitballing more than anything. What if they're wanting him to be the face of it all...a BIG TIME recruit to spearhead? Could be enticing, to be the player an entirely new conference or alliance is built around. Travis Hunter going to JSU changed things a bit, imo. We're now in the days of things happening outside the norm.

"A relegation approach is a complicated if inclusive way to reach what might be the best next move for the two schools and other top programs in the so-called Group of Five conferences: A best-of-the-rest, football-only conference that ignores geography and focuses on maximizing TV dollars and securing access to the College Football Playoff, which will expand from four teams to 12 next year."

Here's the rest of the article...

What's next in major college football realignment? How about a best-of-the-rest league

Or, maybe Boise St was just the best place he could go...
I’ve always like the idea of a promotion/relegation system in American sports after being a fan of European soccer for a while now. You want to stop pro teams from tanking? Send them down a level if they come in the bottom 3.

Sadly, this would never happen in pro sports in the US. Obviously the biggest hurdle is the owners would never go for it. They’d be in jeopardy of losing money if they got relegated and that’s what most of them care most about. The other hurdle is drafts. European soccer doesn’t have anything like that. Would the last place NFL team just lose their draft pick since they are relegated and the team getting promoted gets theirs? Relegation clauses would also spread like wildfire in pro contracts. No one would want to go with the team down to the lower team. These clauses wouldn’t be new, European soccer has them too, but I don’t see it going nearly as well in the US.

Now, a college football system built upon promotion/relegation? There is actually credence to that. Teams already aren’t tanking for draft picks.. no problem there. Schools won’t want to lose TV contracts if they get relegated but if this system ever came into place instead of the NCAA, think about how it could help the smaller schools. Ok, JMU, you just got promoted to the highest tier.. here’s your split of the mega TV contract and it’s your job to stay up. You’d probably end up with small schools, yo-yo schools (aka, they get promoted a half dozen times but can never stay up more than a year or two before they get relegated again), and big schools.. but there is at least the hope for the schools to earn their way to the highest level of college football instead of what our future looks like now where if you aren’t in one of the mega conferences.. good luck to you ever achieving that.

Idk, I could get behind the college system moving to a system like this. Can’t see a pro league ever going to it here though.

You mean my constant not being concerned and whiny over every little thing play.
I don’t whine and complain about every little thing either. In fact I’m a glass half-full kind of guy. OL is a legit concern. Unless you want to waste Nico for more 8-4 type seasons. This is a chance for us to make a run.

I never said it wasn’t a long term thing that needed to be addressed?

I asked how poster knew the OL was gonna be trash next year when next year hasn’t happened yet bc they posted we paid all that money to Nico to give him a trash OL.

We have a potential generational talent at QB and we're going to give him the Dayne and Lane train for protection. It's quite frustrating and will be even more so to watch next season if we don't better develop our younger guys or get experienced depth from the portal; which it would appear we're going to strike out on with our weekend visits.

Yup.

Joe was better than a lot of prior QB's we've had the issue is we were comparing him to two pretty bad ass book ends.
That’s why I don’t compare - I appreciate Milton for the quarterback and teammate and Vol he was and wish him tremendous success.

Hendon Hooker was exactly what we needed at the time - he was a very very good quarterback, teammate, and leader and I wish him tremendous success.

I am really really looking forward to watching young Nico grow and develop in those same areas! I do think this young man is special.

Lane is out of eligibility

Like a lot of things in life, having standards is a good thing.

Having standards can keep you from rushing into situations, or making a bad decision.

Unfortunately, having fun is also closely correlated with making bad decisions.

So at the expense of us high fiving and our coaches winning the offseason on Twitter, we are being selective with some of these guys, or not promising them the world.

Most CFB fans are results-driven. Sports by their very nature are (should be) results driven. Everyone gets pissed about the "result." We do not see the process. We have an extreme lack of information as fans, even in this age. We see a tidbit of news at the beginning, and then the final news at the end and assume it was a point A to point B thing, and we just whiffed completely in some grand way. The reality is that it's a point A to point Z process, and there are so many things that can different ways in between.

We can never have all of the information, I sure as hell don't have all the information, to say what the cause is.

Is it money? Is it the staff? Are players leveraging Tennessee because they heard about the Nico money and they want to get a bigger bag elsewhere?

Are the players throwing out insane red flags when we speak to them? Do they look like crap when we get them on campus to do our own eval?

Do they attempt to dictate how things are going to go?

Do we tell them a number and then they immediately get their phone out and start texting someone? Which is hilarious, and I could absolutely see happening.

Are other schools even asking the same questions or doing the same process that we are?

For now, the guys that are in charge of making the decisions and upholding our standards (which include our culture, our DNA, roster management, etc) are missing, or choosing to miss, on guys.

Welp, Nico is going to get killed if we don’t find a way to pick up 2 solid bodies between now and fall. Sucks to only be a couple pieces away. We need to go all-in on making a run the 2 years we will have Nico.
Agree. 110%.

It does suck. It really underscores all the recruiting misses. Waiting till the last minute to go all in isnt a tactic. Really not whelmed by the staff's recruiting.

Just hope they can find someone between now and practice.

I don't see the concern as others on the OL presently. The bowl game didn't Samson rush over 100 ypg against a Top 10 defense? Most of the sacks was Nico holding the ball too long and some could have been prevented but he will learn that with growth and adjusting to college speed.

Campbell is back and so is Mays and Lampley played well in the bowl game and if Spraggins comes back and Davis with all the freshman and Soph's and they are high on Grant too. Surely some of the younger OL will develop as they get older and stronger in S&C program. I do believe we need at least a left guard because not sure the Texas transfer is going to work out and probably need one OT but there is still lots of transfers out there and will be more in the spring.
