I’ve always like the idea of a promotion/relegation system in American sports after being a fan of European soccer for a while now. You want to stop pro teams from tanking? Send them down a level if they come in the bottom 3.It may be that Boise St offered him the world. Their AD is wanting something brand new, and big...
"An idea floating around the Mountain West Conference calls for the creation of a multi-tiered conference or alliance of leagues that would use a promotion-and-relegation system akin to what is done in European soccer. Yahoo Sports first reported the existence of the proposal and Front Office Sports obtained the detailed presentation of a plan put together by Boise State associate athletic director Michael Walsh."
Idk, I'm just spitballing more than anything. What if they're wanting him to be the face of it all...a BIG TIME recruit to spearhead? Could be enticing, to be the player an entirely new conference or alliance is built around. Travis Hunter going to JSU changed things a bit, imo. We're now in the days of things happening outside the norm.
"A relegation approach is a complicated if inclusive way to reach what might be the best next move for the two schools and other top programs in the so-called Group of Five conferences: A best-of-the-rest, football-only conference that ignores geography and focuses on maximizing TV dollars and securing access to the College Football Playoff, which will expand from four teams to 12 next year."
Here's the rest of the article...
What's next in major college football realignment? How about a best-of-the-rest league
Or, maybe Boise St was just the best place he could go...
Sadly, this would never happen in pro sports in the US. Obviously the biggest hurdle is the owners would never go for it. They’d be in jeopardy of losing money if they got relegated and that’s what most of them care most about. The other hurdle is drafts. European soccer doesn’t have anything like that. Would the last place NFL team just lose their draft pick since they are relegated and the team getting promoted gets theirs? Relegation clauses would also spread like wildfire in pro contracts. No one would want to go with the team down to the lower team. These clauses wouldn’t be new, European soccer has them too, but I don’t see it going nearly as well in the US.
Now, a college football system built upon promotion/relegation? There is actually credence to that. Teams already aren’t tanking for draft picks.. no problem there. Schools won’t want to lose TV contracts if they get relegated but if this system ever came into place instead of the NCAA, think about how it could help the smaller schools. Ok, JMU, you just got promoted to the highest tier.. here’s your split of the mega TV contract and it’s your job to stay up. You’d probably end up with small schools, yo-yo schools (aka, they get promoted a half dozen times but can never stay up more than a year or two before they get relegated again), and big schools.. but there is at least the hope for the schools to earn their way to the highest level of college football instead of what our future looks like now where if you aren’t in one of the mega conferences.. good luck to you ever achieving that.
Idk, I could get behind the college system moving to a system like this. Can’t see a pro league ever going to it here though.
