We just made the E8, i think - much like football on O and Dline its time to stop 'finding diamonds in the rough.'
Basketball is different. When guys like Jack Gohlke carve up a team of NBA picks, it’s different.

Zack Edey was a diamond in the rough. Braden Smith, their PG, had no offers. We started a 5’9” PG with an offer from St. Peter’s, a guy from Uruguay, and a transfer from Northern Colorado on an Elite Eight team. Alabama is in the FF because of a transfer from Ohio and a transfer from North Dakota State. Basketball is not like football.

We didn’t hit enough shots to win. I posted the stats to back that up. You can say fouls all you want. Was that part of it? Sure. But answer me this. What happens if instead of Santi, JJJ, ZZ and Aidoo giving us a combined 17 points, they each gave us 10? That’s a combined 40.

So that would have been an extra 22 points. We cruise despite the fouls. I mean in todays game is it really too much to ask for 2 5th year SRs and 2 JRs to score 10 points each in a huge game?
It’s hard to score 40 with 22 combined field goal attempts. We needed boards or free throws and got neither.

FGs we went 24-62 they went 24-53
3PTs we hit 11-26 they went 3-15
FT we hit 7-11 they went 21-33

We didn’t hit enough free throws to win…

Bingo.

Gripe about rebounding or gripe about FTs, I completely agree there.

But JJJ was 75% from the field and 100% from 3PT he was efficient as hell, would have been nice to see him get more shots. Especially some of those bad ones ZZ forced.

The officiating slowed down the game, especially in the second half. We are a pace team and do better when there aren’t constant breaks. The run against Creighton only had stoppage because they called timeouts. Purdue and Mississippi State both drag down the pace and make it a rock fight.

No way do I think we lose shooting 42.3% from deep on 26 attempts. But one team having 22 more shots is huge even at the FT line.

Said earlier that JJJ should have got more looks. He’s been on the past 2 games. Knecht and Zz forces too much sometimes

Teams had been traveling all year. Its across the board at D2 games, HS games, and D1.

We are a physical team, we got out physicalled.
No we didn't. We got screwed by refs who allowed a hairless Mo-Mo to foul whenever he wanted, walk whenever he wanted, take as much time in the lane as he wanted, basically do whatever the hell he wanted with ZERO consequence.

If you noticed our guys had to limit what they contested in the paint because they called a foul everytime we tried defending. That’s the problem with playing the way we do, refs can absolutely control how we play on defense

If they combined for 40, Knecht doesn’t get 37. Like in football, applying transitive conclusions doesn’t work. We lost because Edey was given all the leverage to do as he pleased—with fouls called/not called and lane violations. Those things don’t happen in a vacuum and result in a direct impact to our flow, momentum and game approach. That ogre was given a shooting foul when he was BEAR-HUGGING the ball!!!

Get your head out of your rear or stay in the PF.

Here's the thing about Edey - why exactly is he the golden boy? I get that he's 7'4'' and fills up a stat sheet. At the same time, he doesn't play an exciting brand of basketball or play for a blue blood program. He isn't athletic, doesn't make highlight reel plays, and is completely one-dimensional. He doesn't seem particularly marketable as a player either. His effectiveness as a basketball player seems to purely be because of his height, which yes, explains some of the appeal, but not to this degree.

The way he is covered and officiated, you'd think this guy is the second coming of LeBron James playing for Duke or UNC. He gets even more pub than a guy like Zion Williamson seemed to get when he was at Duke. What gives?

Last comment. Don’t want to ruin the thread but the Titans OL was beyond turrible last year. Levis played pretty good considering he was thrown to the wolves and had to get rid of the ball in 2 second. Bad decisions put them in the spot but so far I like the decisions and direction we are headed.

Yeah, some of it is on JJJ too passing up looks.

Rebounds really killed us though, part of that is Aidoo being off and only playing 10 minutes & Awaka fouling out. I get why we played JJJ at the 4, but having 4 guys 6’6” or shorter has bit us a few times in rebounding.

Santi also being ill and not playing didn’t help in that area.

These are guys we've supposedly been in communication with and that are in the portal. Saint Thomas played at UNC with Knecht. I think Freeman played with Aidoo in AAU or high school.

I note a lack of bigs thus far, but that could change.

(I did not make these graphics. Pulled them from a basketball recruiting page.)

He may not even leave but wish we could pull Josh Hubbard from Miss St. He was a baller as a freshman.

Exactly and 3 of NC States starters are grad transfers. Now they are going to final 4 as well

Santi, JJJ, Aidoo and ZZ going for a combined 17 points had nothing to do with Edey.

Aidoo- (0-4)
Santi- (0-2)
JJJ- (3-4)
ZZ- (3-12)

All that experience in big time games and they only took a combined 22 shots. That’s pathetic. None of those guys are consistent scorers. I understand your frustrations with Edey. But the fact remains is our experienced guys yet again shrunk in the biggest moments. Their fear and inability to make shots had nothing to do with how Edey was reffed. You said it yourself. Despite the bad officiating, we only lost by 6. Imagine if we had gotten even decent production out of the guys I listed. We win. So yes, our players, outside of DK, absolutely deserve blame.
Not a fan of the tone. But I don't disagree with the point.

At the same time, this is who we've been all year and we ran up against the worst matchup for us, I think, in the whole tournament.

Proud of this team. Won the conf and went to the elite 8. Sec poy, sec defensive poy, all Americans, all region players... Lots to be proud of.

This team was, for sure, one of the best teams in the country and they proved it all year long, despite the afformentioned flaws. Ultimately that was our wall we couldn't get over this year.
