Also, we could put a pretty elite "1 & done" team together. (players that only played 1 year at TN, not just 1 year of college ball)

G - Kennedy Chandler, 13.9 ppg, 3.2 rpg, 4.7 apg, 2.2 spg (27-8 and SECT Champs)
G - Jaden Springer, 12.5 ppg, 3.5 rpg, 2.9 apg, 1.2 spg
G - Keon Johnson, 11.3 ppg, 3.5 rpg, 2.5 apg, 1.1 spg
F - Dalton Knecht, 21.7 ppg, 4.9 rpg, 1.8 apg (27-9, SEC Regular Season Title & Elite Eight)
F - Tobias Harris, 15.3 ppg, 7.3 rpg, 1.3 apg

6th Man
F - Julian Phillips, 8.3 ppg, 4.7 rpg, 1.4 apg

Undefeated 4 years in a row..if they stay all 4…

Hmmmmm..... playing him out on the wing is intresting, I hadn't thought of that. I kinda felt like we were trying to get him developed as ZZ's heir.

I think that was more need than fit, personally.

Jaden Springer played a lot of PG here...he's not a true PG.

KC & ZZ = true PGs. I think if they can land Mack in the portal they'll have the ZZ heir...

It’s tough when Edey stands in the paint and doesn’t get called for fouls. But, we didn’t help ourselves by attacking the basket. I only remember once where we ran a little screen action that pulled Edey up, knecht went to the rim, and it ended in an alley oop to Estrella. Otherwise Knecht settled for midrange misses. No one else drove the ball. You’re not getting fouls that way.
Pick your poison though. lllinois decided to go right at Clingan again and again. That didn't work. We had Aidoo with several shots at 10 feet and in. We used Awaka in screens, but we weren't going to get him the ball much with his size difference.

It's not the attacking fouls that are the only point. Much of Edey's game is getting rebounds, and when he is allowed to clear out with elbows or push Aidoo from behind, then he can do what he wants. Even Steve Lappas, who was eating up Edey's game, even admitted on one play that Aidoo got pushed from behind under the rim.

I'm intrugied by a good backup PG, because you could take Zig down to 30 minutes a game, which would help him in the long run.

I wish we would offer that PJ Haggerty kid from Tulsa, but he’s probably toooooo expensive.

Freshman, 6’3 SG
Averaged 21.2/5.5/3.8. Shooting 49%. He also averaged 2 steals per game.

The story that Zach Edey cheats with impunity "because he is large" and therefore "hard to officiate" is false. It happens because officiating crews refuse to evaluate Edey's actions on equal terms with the way other basketball players are officiated.

This is a very good article** -- against its own will, as it were. That is, the article tiresomely devotes itself to blathering the hackneyed cover story for Edey. But the article's "expert witness" (or interview) -- buried deep (paragraph 20!) -- is a current coordinator of officials who asked not to be identified so that he could speak candidly.

"“You don’t want to put gray area fouls on Edey," he says. "You want to make sure that [any] fouls [that are actually called on Edey] are more or less so obvious that everyone in the arena can say the ref had no choice.”

Even that illicit standard was regularly violated yesterday. But even taking the formula on its own terms, it is a prescription for favoritism and a obvious formula to exclude Edey from the rules of basketball. How can this happen?

Rick Boyages, the Big Ten’s former coordinator of officials, explains. “Fans want to watch the best players play," he says. "Every team has one or two players they need to have in the game for 30 minutes, and the refs are aware of it.” Officials don't call fouls on Edey because they don't want fouls called on Edey.

The last time Edey fouled out of a game was March 22, 2022 -- more than two years ago. Result: Saint Peter’s upset Purdue in the Sweet 16. That's when it was apparently decided: "never again." Edey has played 67 games since and been whistled for four fouls only six times.

** Edey gets away with murder because officials, the NCAA, and television want it that way [I may have retitled this link to The Athletic.]

Yeah, hopefully him fading this season highlights the need for it. Hell even just taking him down to 33-35 would pay huge benefits.

38 against Mississippi State
31 against Saint Peter's (which is WAY too high for a blow-out like that was)
40 against Texas
40 against Creighton
39 against Purdue

Sadly Santi being ill the last 2 games and Gainey just not being a suitable PG left us in a bad spot... Mack would be a top priority for me if I had any say in the matter. Even letting him and ZZ play a good bit together wouldn't be the worst thing. Slide him to the PG spot and bring in Gainey or Carr to give ZZ some breaks.

He's a 2 though, we need a backup 1.
Right now the wing looks weak.
But we have a chance to have a log jam there again.
Gainey, Freddie, Shak, Carr.
You run the risk of somebody running off if you bring in one wing, two wings and I think Carr looks for playing time elsewhere.

I want Carr to get minutes next year. I love his confidence.

But he also is entering his 3rd year of college, was at TCU the year before and transferred to Tulsa. Not saying he's a bad take, but might mean he's not as expensive as you may think. My only worry is he's a BAD 3 pt shooter.

I will feel pretty good if we don't lose more than 3 in the portal, we've been able to find and add some solid pieces the last few off-seasons.

This year DK obviously a diamond, Gainey not a popular addition but filled his role as a 6th man very well and improved a ton defensively as the year progressed.
Last year it was only Key, he was frustrating but overall as a 6th option he added value

This year will be the first though where we need to add potential starters and in bigger numbers. Got at least 2 spots to fill right now and most likely another 1 or 2 opens up with portal losses.
Think we could easily see three hit the portal. If so, we'll wish them well. If keeping them is a priority, we'll keep them.
