Recruiting Football Talk VII

Winning in a less competitive conference with less talent is not the same as winning in the SEC. She'll have to recruit at a much higher level and she does not have the relationships with the kind of players we need.

Sooo I’m assuming you weren’t over the moon with who we hired👀

But Arkansas would be content with those results, unlike KY.

They will be for a little while. The problem is always not meeting expectations. Like Butch Jones' 2015/2016 teams. They had decent records that wouldn't get you complaints many years, but when you find ways to lose to teams with much less talented rosters you're wasting potential.

As a LV season ticket holder from 1993-2021, I have strong feelings about the type of person we should look for as a LV basketball coach. With Holly, it was always a given she would take over for Pat, even if we were pretty sure she wasn't the best option. I wasn't excited when Kellie was hired, but I tried to be optimistic. Anyone who thought we were going to pull a top tier coach now just wasn't being realistic. None of them, other than maybe Mulkey, would have even considered it, and KM is one we should stay as far away from as possible. I like the Caldwell hire, and I'm looking forward to seeing how she does here.

If you pay any attention to WBB, you know that pretty much whoever has the best player wins the championships. You have Chamique Holssclaw, you win multiple titles. Same for Taurasi, Parker, Griner, Wilson, and we'll see soon about Clark. So the most important thing UT can do is make sure Caldwell has everything she needs to attract top players. In this era, NIL is most important, but I agree with others who mentioned the coaching staff, and we also need buy-in from past players.

As for the LV forum, the last time I went in there was about a decade ago, and there was one poster who was so toxic I never returned. I don't know if Bruin or that person got my first block, but it was definitely one of them. I think a handful of posters like that can make people think everyone in a forum is like that, even if it's far from the truth. From what I can tell, the only completely unredeemable forum is the FF. I'm just thankful that I found you morans in the RF, or I would have been off of VN long ago.

Bruin!..😭😂😂😂😂😂 poor guy…🥹

Outside of SC and LSU, how many other really good teams are in the SEC?

Probably a bit subjective. But I think the SEC has 2 really good teams and then about 3-4 good ones.

LSU & SC = top tier
Ole Miss, Lady Vols & Mississippi State = good

The 4th is debatable Bama or Vandy, Vandy imo needs to prove it wasn't a 1 year fluke and Bama has been up and down. 2 to 3 years winning 20 then a few years not getting there.

But…. There are very, very few that would not have something to be concerned about. Not wanting to pronounce doom on the day of the hire is different than being delusional. It just means stating the obvious as if it’s not obvious is obviously not an enjoyable thing while fans are wanting to talk about what might go right on the day of the hire.
It is the law of human nature that many people would rather be right than successful. The most unreasonable or irrational people have staked their self-worth on their predictions and opinions and live for the time when they can gloat and loudly boast about their correctness. Likewise, they cannot bear being incorrect and will drop off the face of the Earth if they are. I work with adolescents and understand this behavior well.
It's funny that these people often end up rooting for the failure of their own stated cause. It is actually a miserable existence to only be happy in others' failure and not to be happy at what should be your own successes.

Anyone thinking Arkansas is in a worse spot with Cal than Musselman is crazy. Despite making a sweet sixteen and elite eight Arkansas's highest final AP ranking was 10th in the Musselman era. He went 111-59 for a 65.3% and made the dance only 3 times in 5 years. Cal is closer to Nolan Richardson and Eddie Sutton than Musselman. Only twice in 15 seasons did Kentucky miss the big dance and one was the shortened season post COVID.

Hogs are upgrading big time, kinda surprised they were able to land him but he has ties to one of their biggest donors in the Tyson family so not too surprised.

Seems like a situation where the admin/AD went after their people and then the big money donor said "Call Cal and we'll make sure we get him"
Kentucky fans are spoiled no doubt but I see Cal as an moderate upgrade for Arkansas only because of recruiting, however if Kentucky fails to get someone like Nate oats or better that will be hilarious

The BaseVol team has continued to celebrate and generally enjoy being good at their sport, but they have been much more subdued outside of the dugout. They generally only have one or two players at the plate after a homerun and just give a slight helmet tap or something along those lines. They may celebrate more fiercely in the dugout, and I hope they do, but it is not done so much on camera. Of course the handbag clenchers over in the LV forum wouldn't know that because they don't bother to actually watch the baseball team play. They only wait for a negative news item and then turn on the tv to see the negative highlight and complain about TV being a hoodlum and a cad. I can't stand it when people get upset with kids celebrating being good. I suppose there is a limit and being overly crass is probably stepping over a line, but sometimes that happens in sports when emotions are high and you are playing on a big stage. I just wonder what the LV forum would do if CKC led the LV to a FF next year but did so with a team that was confident to the point of being cocky and celebrated like crazy on their way there?

Baseball team is subdued by necessity. The 2022 team made the NCAA act in insane ways to police the sport. All the celebrations that spawned off of us in 2022 were awesome. Now there’s none of it and bat flips themselves are ejectable. It’s insane.

I know that wasn’t your primary point but I felt the need to vent on it

I am for letting the kids play. If you blast a huge game winning homerun in a super regional game to send your team to Omaha and all you are allowed to do is silently trot around the base path like an automaton then who wants to play that game...or watch that game. Emotion is key to sports, even if the old foggies don't like it.

After reading through the thread, it sounds like Caldwell can flat out COACH, but the key issue is going to be her ability to recruit/get the elite players signed to compete with the elite programs and the larger portion of the SEC... You can only coach and scheme so much against better talented and depth rich programs like SC/LSU/UConn/etc... This is where DW is taking a gamble. I am also reading NIL is just as big a deal as the other sports, so UT will need to make elite funds available to her so that she has a chance to build a team. Guess we'll see soon enough!
