Good summary, but I think this leaves out the benefits of the pace of play and movement that Uconn forced Purdue into. They specifically attacked Edey in the paint we largely did not. We forced Knecht to exhaust himself instead of exhausting our opponent.
there's a few reasons for that....primarily being they got two guys that they were willing to match up with him 1 on 1, regardless of foul issues. and while they didn't stop Edey from scoring, they did enough to limit him rebounding and passing to take away basically everyone else. i realize Ucon did double him at times, but for a large part of the game it was Uconn's 2 bigs vs. Edey. and they did "enough".
they rebounded well enough to get in to transition making Edey run.
they shot over that drop defense with the mid range well enough to make Purdue account for it defensively.....and making shots reduces Edey's impact on rebounding and Purdue's transition game.
let's face it...Ucon made some really tough 2's that most teams can't/won't make....the ball was going in for them....there were more than a couple of circus shots that found the bottom of the net....
they dominated from the 3 line.
and their bench was ULTRA productive.
Uconn made very few mistakes, and never panicked in late shot clock situations.
and none of this is really out of character for Uconn, it was just "different" to see it against a team and player like Purdue/Edey that had had their way basically all season. Uconn matched them up so well, and is really the first team that basically let Edey eat, and was able to shut everything/everyone else down. they're the only team to execute the "purdue game plan" consistently that i've seen.
the big thing missing that hardly no one is talking about is that Edey's passing game from the post was basically a non event. Uconn did double him at times, but they let Sampson and Clinger (I know, sp..) deal with him, even at the detriment of getting in to foul trouble. they were able to defend lanes and take away those open 3's purdue likes.
and they did all of that so well that they basically dominated the team that nobody thought could get dominated. nobody is surprised that Uconn won. everyone knew they were capable. i'm not sure anyone saw the beating they dished out coming.
i don't pretend to be a basketball expert, and i've seen plenty of great teams be more athletic than opponents, more talented than opponents that go on to win titles. but this Uconn team for two years has probably played the best "team" basketball on both ends of the court that i maybe have ever seen. in fact i think when Rick Barnes lays his head on his pillow at night, and dreams about what his perfect team would look like, it probably looks a lot like what this Uconn team looks like.
