So I think Hyatt was a far better WR than people realized/gave credit for, even on the deep shots we've taken I've not seen any of our WRs really beat their guy like Hyatt was constantly doing last season.
i think the whole offense flowed better which helped contribute to him getting so wide open… not much confusion happening on the defensive side of the ball right now… Hyatt is good though.

Tennessee is last in the SEC in passing plays of 20 yards (9)

A year after the Vols were No. 2 in the SEC and No. 19 nationally with 55 completions of 20 yards, they rank last in the SEC and No. 106 nationally. Even Florida has 12 completions of 20 yards. That’s not ideal.
Tends to happen when 47% of your pass attempts are behind the LOS

It's never as simple as just one thing when it comes to something like play calling.

OL, Milton's lack of running, No clear "I'm going by you" deep threat like Hyatt, and a lack of accuracy when Milton does go deep

Milton has great arm talent, but his timing has never been great. And of all the things a QB can really do to separate themselves timing is king imo. It's why most the top NFL guys were able to play as long as they did (Brady, Peyton, Brees, etc.) they had timing, so even if they couldn't launch the ball 50+ in the air anymore it didn't matter.

Milton seems to always be late on lead the WR routes (crosses, slants, etc.) and that's the most timing driven route. Hendo hit those so much better and we'd see Hyatt snag in stride and his speed let him take a 7 yard slant to the endzone because of it.
Agree completely on those last two paragraphs. We’ve had to be selective on our deep shots because we are seeing more two high safety looks than we did last year. This leaves lots of middle of the field and intermediate routes open but that’s where Joe has struggled in the past because like you said, timing is crucial. I think teams know this and are saying you’re are either going to have to run it down our throats and put drives together or Joe is going to have to beat us in the area of the field that he is the least accurate in.

I think when Heupel mentioned that the “throws were there in the middle of the field” or something to that effect after one of the earlier games this season this is what he was talking about. If Joe can start consistently making these throws, teams will have to be more selective in their 2 high safety looks, which will open up the deep shots. But Joe has to hit those first.

It's weird, cause I think the play calling has been trying to hide it in the early games. First time I really noticed this was Austin Peay, quite a few early throws with a guy running free and across Joe's face and he was behind on every single one of them. Could the WR have still made the catch, sure. But it's hard to run full speed one direction and be asked to contort to catch a ball behind you.

Most those are big gain completions if he's leading the WRs or hitting 'em right on the hands. Hendon was really good about ball placement and timing and that's why he was such an accurate QB regardless of where he played.

Have there been any updates on Pili? Injury was said to keep him out a few weeks..... I haven't heard any updates and we're a month later. Any chance he plays?

People, fans in particular but even players, compare one years team to the next and assume this year will be a continuation of last. This year's team is a different team and will play differently. To understand this watch Mike Leach's rant to his Texas Tech team after they lost to Baylor.

I think Hyatt is a great WR. But I also think we're not calling plays like we did last year. Might be the new OC, though I thought Heupel was supposedly calling the plays, or maybe they are aware of the deficiencies of our OL and that is forcing them to call it different. I don't really know the reason, but it's different.
You also had hooker. Who threw football accurately downfield. Not saying Joe doesn’t but hooker did it well. He rarely missed a streaking WR.

Well, they’ve gone and ruined the Ultimate Tennessee Podcast. It used to be hosted by Will Bolling and Lucas Panzica and was imo the best Vols podcast out there. They’ve both been replaced by a female host and it’s going about youd expect it to. I’ve tried giving it a few listens but it ain’t good.
