This years grew on me.I don't dislike the smokeys (except last year's version). In fact, this year's looked pretty cool. I just prefer to limit the alternate uniform games to 1 per season so we can wear traditionals in the other games. And if I have to choose 1 alternate uniform, I'm going Dark Mode.
I hadn’t thought about that but lye breaks down everything so it makes sense that it ruins cast iron skillets. Still I don’t like anything but a very cursory wash on cast iron. If it’s really dirty use salt scrub off stuck on bits. Super Cleaning a pan that depends on fats and oils and that’s going to be heated enough to fry or bake is a bit silly.Definitely trolling. If you put a cast iron, especially a modern one, in a dishwasher you're going to have a heck of a time cooking and cleaning it. Proteins from meats with chemically adhere to the iron and stick. You'll basically have to burn them off.
I enjoy restoring old cast iron as a hobby. Love the cool and sometimes complex chemistry that is involved in something people overlook. I've got a handful of pre-40s pans that are incredible to cook with.
(Now, I will say you can use modern dish soap to clean skillets, just dry and add a thin layer of oil after. Modern dish soaps are not lye-based and will not strip seasoning off. Back in the day the lye soaps would make your seasoning disintegrate which is why you were taught not to use soap on them
Will always love a good cast iron for camping, but will never understand folks using them regularly at home either. Not the best and not the lightest. Just the sturdiest, if well kept, making them great for daytrip outdoors shenanigans. Obviously not backpacking with one either.I hadn’t thought about that but lye breaks down everything so it makes sense that it ruins cast iron skillets.
