Recruiting Football Talk VIII

Or you just don’t read the posts. It’s funny that nobody else can answer points @SoilVol and I have made about other organizations not courting the state university fanbase.

To each their own
When teams have the opportunity to draft a guy at position of need and he happens to be local they'll lean into that for sure, but they don't reach on picks for being local.

Kevin Byard is an example for the Titans. The Steelers recently drafted a local DB who's dad played for them. You usually see teams sign local products as UDFAs. Either college or if they're originally from an area.

If being happy and gloating that the Titans are winning with an arrogant, weird, UK qb makes me an unlikeable poster, then that’s more to do with yall than it does me

I don’t have hard feelings for those of yall who don’t like or hate the Titans. I only argue when yall say they need to cater to Vols fans by drafting Vols players.

Its the same thing (to me) as the posters who say the Vols need to “lock down the state” by taking a ton of instate kids when they may not be who that staff want.
You're the one that promised to be 'insufferable'. That word carries certain connotations. Don't blame us if we took you at your word.

Yah. I know. UT has the ball. UT has to substitute before the opponent can substitute. If they're dropping a fake injury to stop the clock, it's because UT is going fast and refusing to substitute. There will be very few times that Lane Kiffin will be able to run a 3rd stringer on, just to drop, stop the clock, and get the defense a rest.

That's the point of Heupel's tempo.
What does a third stringer have to do with it? You designate a starter whose backup is closest to the starters ability, and that guy fakes the injury. He can do it every drive with barely any drop off for that one play.

TWO names out of 27 years comes to mind…I’m sure there are others, but it’s a noticeable trend. I’m a Bears fan and when Jerry Angelo was GM he had a NOTICEABLE affinity for selecting Vanderbilt players. So deflecting me with the PAY ATTENTION bs is a tad weak. I wouldn’t have posted if I didn’t.
I said TWO AS AN EXAMPLE but maybe you didn’t read it

Jesse mahalona, Troy Fleming, Albert Haynes worth as 3 more EXAMPLES. Go search it to find all of them if you want, not my problem lol

They traded for Dobbs because they had a need. That wasn't catering to Vol fans. Catering to Vol fans would have been resigning him. Ironically, that would have also been the smart move. They knew Willis was not good. They knew RT was injury prone. They should have signed an experienced back up. That also would have allowed them to draft an injured Hendon Hooker. Levis was a bad choice.
The catering is that they couldn't signed a different QB but chose Dobbs. They needed butts in seats.

Here we go. NFL apologists: "ooh, aah, the NFL..." Fine, I just happen to think very little of their business practices.

Has nothing to do with who the Preds draft. It has everything to do with the culture they have instilled in their organization from the top to the bottom. They do everything they can to embrace the area and give Chik-Fil-A a run for their money on customer service attitude. Why? Not bc they want to "coddle college sports fans" but because it is good business. They don't assume they are above trying to fit in.

The Titans came in and have, from the beginning, displayed the "we are the NFL, and don't need anyone" attitude. They think they are above having to practice "good business." And they will continue to reap 30% empty seats on average as long as they do it.

I started my post by saying it was petty and I didn't care. But if you think other NFL franchises don't try to embrace their local culture, you are mistaken.
Titans avg home attendance in 2023 was 64,000 and some change. The capacity of Nissan Stadium is 69,000 and some change

Not sure where your 30% empty comes from

Third stringer is a red herring. I'm trying to figure out how a coach is going to substitute for a player against a tempo team to slow the game down because the offense is going too fast and not substituting. Would they call a timeout, which negates the usefulness of a fake injury, whose very purpose is to stop the game without taking a timeout?

He’s glad he retired

2022 broke him

With context:

Superdog picks on Gameday: Saban takes Toledo +10.5 against MSST, says he’s a MAC guy and that was his first head coaching job.

RECE: “If you’re such a ‘MAC guy,’ how come you didn’t take the 50 or whatever the alma mater, Kent State, is getting today?”

SABAN: “Kent State couldn’t beat St. Francis last week or something. I’m not going against Tennessee.”

If being happy and gloating that the Titans are winning with an arrogant, weird, UK qb makes me an unlikeable poster, then that’s more to do with yall than it does me

I mean, you're the one who said you'd be insufferable, so that seems like more of a "you" thing.

No titans fan but its still a possibility he can not suck, year and a half in and he can still turn it around..........but I'm leaning toward it being unlikely. He has a lot of bad habits that can be fixed, but will he is the question.
Callahan was super frustrated with him about those bad habits last week with how much emphasis they put on fixing them over offseason

Hell, we all were frustrated😂😂

A True Fan of a NFL team.doesn't like individuals complaining about their team if they aren't a fan of NFL.

I can say what I want about Dak playing QB for Dallas but if a non NFL fan chimes in with their 2 cents worth damn rite I'm going straight into defense mode.
We both know Dak is not winning a SB.

The most telling thing about Levis is that Callahan had just told him to take care of the football. That we were playing good enough defense to win as long as we didn't turn it over.

And Levis went straight out and threw that dumb Pick-6 because he didn't want to give up a sack.

That's when I officially wrote him off as having a chance to develop.

And if you pay attention to my posts, you'll see it's not about drafting Vols. Sure, it would be nice if they did, but it's more about drafting smart and not courting controversy.
Yes, but you’re not the one openly saying draft vols, so when I say “yall” it pertains to those who say they need to draft vols to court the home state university

The Titans thing is really just basic marketing. Do they want more fans, specifically Volunteer fans? Does drafting more VFLs bring in more of those? It seems that you'd want every fan you can get. More jersey sales = more $. Obviously your priority should be on winning. Winning brings in more fans so you don't draft simply because of the college they played at. I think if all else was equal between two choices, it might be wise to pick the VFL. It does appear to me on the surface, the Titans have avoided picking the VFLs. 🤷‍♂️

Honestly, I don't think they were catering. I think they looked around the league and saw Dobbs as both the best and most affordable option. I also think that's why we've seen Dobbs traded from team to team to back up starting QBs.

At least three people have answered that, including me.

Summary:
It's not JUST about rivals, examples given.
It's not JUST that he's unlikable and weird. Winning is likable.
It's those things, plus him being a chronic loser who sucked in college, with little indication that he won't suck worse against higher competition levels.

EVERY organization needs to court their fanbases. The Titans may be the worst at doing so. This is from someone who was a fan since they came to Tennessee. I started this season as a casual observer. You know what? He's the same loser he was before they drafted him, just worse.
The post of mine you responded to with this post had nothing to do Levis

It had to do with franchises catering to the state university

This is something we agree on about resigning Dobbs

If you want to sub, you tell the guy who you wanted to come out the legitimate way to fall down. He was going to come off the field anyway, so now he comes off and you get your subs.
