Recruiting Football Talk VIII

Something is wrong. Even in year 1&2 with “lower rated” players we had guys running free against whoever all the time. Our receivers either arent that good or our scheme has gotten worse. I haven’t seen one creative play call this year. Not sure why. We have torched teams on screens to the RB and haven’t seen one all year. Someone explain this to me? Why does it feel like our playcalling is worse? I don’t want to hear the coaches don’t trust Nico because they’re about to have no excuse. They’re signed or committed multiple 5 star QBs and high 4 star QBs.
I think it has more to do with how teams are playing us.
Everyone is staying 2 High consistently now.

Seems like most of the problems were on the interior. The pressure didn't seem to come from the edge that much. Which is why it was infuriating we pretty much didn't run outside at all.
No outside runs is starting to pissss me off tbh. I’m not sure why we aren’t rolling Sampson out and hitting him on some screens either.

VQ mini pod is a good listen
AP had his best speech ever on it
Reminds you of what’s up and that we can still have a helluva year
Six straight quarters of not just uninspiring offense, but downright Pruitt-level bad gives me pause.

Something glaring is out on Nico, these WRs, and this OL. They are too easily stopped.

I don't see any of the same formations and routes from 2022. For example, we didn't stack receivers at all last night that I saw. We did it all the time in 2022. We ran tempo all the time in 2022 and the first 3 games of this year. We hardly ran tempo at all last night. It's all different from what was working.

But what does give me hope is Thornton has progressed pretty good, Sampson is still good, and Nico has that Bray arm where he can spray it all over the field. He just needs more rep.

The defense is good but I don’t know what that was from the DL and Pili got dragged around. Just looked like they didn’t hit in practice for two weeks.

Hard to tell who is and isn’t open watching on tv from regular angles.

But like this awesome play from Nico…whoever was lined up out wide to R was open :02 seconds into the play. And it looks like Nico is looking that way but doesn’t pull the trigger. Makes an amazing play after but one of my questions was why do we never go over the middle. Well here is a guy breaking open and Nico doesn’t see it or doesn’t trust it.

Maybe he’s still adjusting to SEC speed.

We had one run to the left for about 8 yards, from what I saw. I tried to occupy myself with other things, but like a moth to big bright purple light i'm a glutton...

concurred

I was more referencing twitter tbh. I know how this place rolls. Take the worst of the most negative posters on here and that seems to be nearly all of “Vol twitter”
Yeah, and listening to some of the streaming post-game shows where they read chats, it’s just nuclear take after nuclear take.

Look, Ole Miss showed you can lose to Kentucky at home and look like absolute garbage, and then rout South Carolina on the road. I’m pissed and concerned about the offense, our OL, and the decision-making of our quarterback, but the doomsaying after every loss gets really old.

Even still... If he had led him on that throw, he probably scores. Thornton had to come back for the ball. Nico was just off last night.

We haven’t ran tempo hardly all year. We are playing at a much lower pace than years 1&2

I mean he’s running to his L trying to heave it downfield. I don’t fault that throw at all.

I think it’s more of a concern (or at least a sign of where Nico is *currently*) that a WR was open immediately and he didn’t see it and held it until pressure made him move.

I’ve also seen people complain about needing quicker hitting plays. Well there’s an example of one that just wasn’t executed.

All of that being said I think Nico will be fine and end up being an absolute baller. Just appears to be a little gun shy currently.

That throw Nico made to DT was incredible also
On to Florida

We control our own destiny

Last night can either be good or bad
It’s on the players now
On the last drive? No it wasn’t, it was behind him, he did a good job making a play tho and getting it down field. DT had good separation, had he lead him he coulda scored. It was a great catch tho

Yeah, he’s just not pulling the trigger. He’s also prematurely deciding to tuck it and run when guys would be open if he could just buy himself another second or two.

Overthinking the situation is what Nico seems to be doing. Just sling it if it's picked off so be it.

That is an extremely hard throw to make on the run. It’s amazing he even had the arm strength to get it to him in the first place
