Recruiting Football Talk VIII

For me it's 2 things besides 12 personnel

1. Give Nico more chances to pull it on the option.
2. More outside runs with the RB or jet sweeps or those little pop passes.

Gotta get going E/W a little bit.
I agree we need to have the QB run more but that won’t happen. Never has with Heup anywhere he’s been

I think that will do a good job of keeping the backers honest instead of cleaning up the gaps, but with teams running a 3–2 with a star that’s just a lot of speed on defense to close off the edge. It’ll help but not significant enough. More power runs will let us be able to run counter plays tho, and veer options.

They’re gonna have to find a way to pick up these blitzes in pass pro tho. Idk if it’s theyre not used to seeing these blitzes on film from a 3-2, the speed or what but even if we get our run game going the pass pro the last 2 weeks has been terrible. And I 100% believe it’s the scheme the defenses are running. Even with Uga running a 3-2 there was plays they blitzed 7 guys back in 22. Heup has shown something on film and guys are exploiting it

It’s also a little odd that no WR gets separation except Thornton. Bru is good at breaking off on choice routes for a curl. But far too often there’s just nobody open for Nico

If any of our “insiders” see this, leave Heupel a note on his desk telling him to cut the **** and get back to running tempo. He’s killing this team by changing his offense. All of our pre-snap penalties and boneheaded plays last night came from when we slowed down.

I don’t think Nico is a very good natural runner. I think he’s athletic but just doesn’t seem to have a knack for finding good lanes to run through. There’s been times when he’s scrambled out and I thought he ran through the wrong run lane and could’ve gotten more yards.

No problem, Mookie. I’ll pass on your message.

Last 6 quarters we have been averaging 4.61 yards per play (including the nico throw to thorton last night and sampson’s 53 yard run) and have only scored 20 points. That is a really bad 6 quarters of offense

Heupel can be too stubborn at times. Last night was one of them.

You have to play to win.

Once they got 14 points he thought it was over.

He didn’t think they needed to score again until it was too late and then you needed to let them score to try and score yourself in under a minute. And then you blow clock management and play calling.

Still bummed we lost but we have plenty of opportunities ahead.

Can't run deep choice if you can't get deep.

Our fans beat their chest about him like he's won multiple national titles and makes final Fours consistently. He does neither of those things.

He’s done more than Heupel has. Barnes won an SEC title in his 4th year. He’s also a better coach. For all the heat we give Barnes, he would never have had a gameplan worse than what Heupel did last night. That was miserable. And that’s on the coach.

Idk if that's true. We've seen some brutal offensive performances and have had a couple really bad losses. SCAR and Vandy just to name a couple.

Why are we putting Barnes and Hype in the same conversation. It’s not either or. Hype and the team was terrible last night. Simple as that!! We got 7 more games to either figure it out or pray for wins. Either way it’s GO VOLS!!! 🍊🍊🍊.. I for 1 know it can be MUCH worse!!

To add to this, if you take away sampson’s 53 yard run and thorton’s 42 yard catch, the total yards per play the last 6 quarters is 3.94

It's like we continued to milk the clock from the OU 2nd half lol. Really bizarre to see a Heupel offense look so radically different from the first 3.5 games.

It's wild because usually you have to tell young QB's to chill, but with Nico it's the opposite. He needs to take a few more chances.
I believe Nico will be great at Quarterback position but he needs to get that I'm better than you mentality on the field. Little to laid back also he needs to be more vocal on the field to his teammates. Meaning rip the Offensive linemen a new @$$ when they're not doing their job. Rip into the receivers for not getting separation on their routes. Nico is the straw that stirs the drink and he needs to let his teammates know this.

I said that last night. His attitude reminds me a lot of Mariota and he didn't last long in the NFL and people said that was one of the reasons why.

I get what you are saying, but at the end of the day it is pay for play. I doubt Nico comes here without that NIL deal. That performance was not up to the pay for play standard. He is paid to perform, that is why he is there.

That is probably an unpopular take, but it is what it is now. If somebody doesn’t like it, take it up with the NIL system we are in. CF is officially a semi-pro farm league for the NFL. These are not student athletes anymore, at best they are athlete students.
Paying a college QB doesn’t make him invulnerable to the missteps that have plagued college QBs for 100 years. When you get a raise, does your performance improve the following day?

To me, there is a difference between guys just missing shots (which happens a lot, yes) and the game plan being poor and the team looking unprepared. I can’t say there has ever been a game under Barnes where the team just looked unprepared and that there was no game plan. There was no game plan last night. None. Heupel had no idea what he was trying to do.
