Recruiting Football Talk VIII

And it used to be but he's gone into a shell for some reason.

I remember back in 19 we were playing at UF.... 4th down and we run mesh. Had the first and Holliday dropped it(got benched for the season then transferred out) I don't think we have ran a mesh concept since.
Was begging for mesh all night

I mean come on it was wide open all night 5 to 10 yards over middle

I never shoot the messenger and appreciate your honest, inside takes.

Lay it on me.
I feel the need for a new o-line coach.
I’ve outlined my views in the past that we have a real problem at offense line. I thought it was that Elarbee’s recruiting was a disaster and development was not good at all but last night coaching was horrible too.

I’m sorry if other people don’t see the issue.

Yesterday helped me reset my expectations.

We aren’t a complete team. That’s okay.

We can likely play with anyone but dominating on both sides seems unrealistic at this point.

Got some fixing to do.

We can win the rest but could also lose a couple.

It is what it is.

I’m with you

I also see Tennessee as being at the beginning of a championship window

If they don’t have elite success this year, it’s ok as long as they continuously improve, recruit well, play hard, etc.

I think the next 3-4 years will tell the full tale on the Heupel era

And I think we will be fine

This is all so much better than the 2010s…

The recruiting “end results” have gotten better each year - though I accept that he might not be the recruiting force responsible for landing the recruits.

I was fine with that model - one where others “get” the players, and Elarbee “coaches” the players.

But it appears the Coaching & Development end of the arrangement isn’t being held up.

I’m still so pissed at our WR room.

We got no dudes showing up. Where is a Velus Jones Jr, a Hyatt, a Tillman? No offense but Bru and Squirrel… just lack it. They aren’t game changers. Thornton had 1 catch!

We are galdang WRU. We’ve always had dudes. Where are my dudes.

Agree. Could survive recruiting if development and coaching were good.

@Smokey123 More to our conversation

We talked about that in this thread the week before Oklahoma. It's not a new and sudden revelation. TB surely read that conversation here. This is breaking news, except that we didn't win. I was surprised we didn't see it at Okie. And surprised last night we didn't use the tight end game to get short and middle length quick passes to try to defeat it. That's why I said to 123 last night that I suspected Arkie might have been deliberately pushing WRs into longer and slower developing routes. Part of the same package. The problem with OL depth and the OTs in particular has been a long standing discussion here, too, as I guess you know. The fake injuries like every time like clockwork in SEC play when we get a long play into scoring territory is a new development at this scale. Everyone has gone full Kiffin. All these issues are not insurmountable, imo, excepting possibly more OL injuries and play. None of this means Heupel can't win. That Bama lost with a home crowd at Vandy is still funny.

We have got to get back to throwing the ball ACCURATELY over the middle. From what I've seen in the past few years running the ball and hitting the 10-20 yard plays over the middle of the field is what really opens everything up on the outside and deep. If the defense is bringing the pressure the quick crossing stuff slows that down considerably. Of course pass protection is a must but you should only have to hold a block for a three count at most to make that play. Quick reads, quick runs, quick passes that is what makes it all work.........but I could be wrong.

I really don't think they were an issue as much as Nico and the OL. Guys were open a lot, Nico missed them with his eyes or his throws or he had no time to get the ball out.

Now I'm no coaching wizard but I believe I've watched enough football in my 40 years of life so far to know that it's not a good recipe with our OLine problems and the amount of time it takes for our passing plays to develop. I know that the supposed advantage our offense has over defenses is that it spreads you out from sideline to sideline and creates holes and mismatched....but I think it might be time to tighten up the formations some and get quicker hitting routes and concepts.

He actually did get injured the second time lol, he got lit up. But we hadn't tried to rush to the LOS to go fast on that play.
Great! I'll have to look for that when I muster the fortitude to rewatch that debacle. Someone said our OTs were struggling to play fast. I'll have to look for that too, alas.

I was just watching a little of 22 UGA...... The difference in play calling is still staggering.
1. On at least half the plays we stacked wideouts getting them a clean release
2. We ran a couple outside zone plays trying to attack the edge
3. Passes over the middle, I only made it through a little bit of the second quarter and our TE had 2 or 3 just short little passes over the middle and then one or two with the wideouts. I want to know where those went.

Nico is a real talent no doubt BUT he is young and instead of taking what is given to him I think he looks to make the big play.....every play. That can be good but learning to pick your shots comes with maturity I suppose.
