Recruiting Football Talk VIII

So *if* we lose to a bad UF team and Billy Bob beats us for a 2nd year in a row, what is going to be the sentiment?

A win against a BAD, BAD, BAD UF team doesn’t say much. A loss, however, will speak volumes about where this team’s at.
Really?

Team rolled into Arkansas thinking (like I did) this would be an easy win because of all the hype. Hopefully ship gets righted and a lesson is learned. Arkansas wanted more it than us.

@secking was first one to say it. 70 points and 700 yards against lesser opponents to skew numbers
If we lose to Florida or some other **** program this season I’ll start to believe this

But he did beat Bama, Clemson, now OU, etc.
So this really isn’t saying anything considering teams lose all the time.

Have the whining invaders left yet? Yesterday broke my heart, but I'm not calling it quits on the season over one bad game. Take the L, learn from it, get better. Kick Florida's ass and go from there.

On the bright side, both the Dodgers and Mets lost today.
Yeah it sucks we lost but it ain't like it's over. I stay outta here on game weekends because of the ignorant idiots who invade. I'm dumb enough without it getting worse listening to them.
We'll get it fixed and WGWTFA.

Florida sucks. We get them at Neyland under the lights. We're gonna smoke them and it'll be glorious
A lot of people here aren't considering the effects of an SEC road environment. This offense has trouble when they get behind the chains. The OL and RSF QB aren't good enough right now to get behind the chains and then make something happen with all the noise. And that's pretty much what happened Saturday.

There's a good chance we see a better offensive showing against UF.

Every coach in thus league is good. They've either won somewhere or been an Elite coordinator somewhere that has won. (Beamer isn't in either category)
They know how to adjust, now Heup has to find the counters to their counters.

That was because of our defense, not the offense or Heup handling and adjusting. We struggled to consistently move the ball. Had less than 350 yards and over 100 of that came on 2 big plays. And when people pointed that out y’all blew it off
If we would have had that same production, we beat Arkansas. All I’m saying is people are saying Heup can’t adjust in the losses only. He’s adjusted previously and won. He adjusted to NC State and won by 41. Has to go both ways, but I know that’s not VN.

Well, this didn’t age well. 😡
Well in fairness you were correct. We played right into their hands by playing four down and zone. That Green fella also played out of his mind and got lucky a few times as far as passing. If there was any game that we needed press man and to bring the heat, especially when the backup was in, it was that one. I think we quit exclusively relying on our front four to stop the run and pressure the qb and mix it up, we've become predictable.

Let's start with our first play at Arkie. Nico passed to Thornton for 15 yards. It was called back for ineligible receiver downfield. The second time we tried to throw on first down (during our second possession) Nico was sacked. We began our third possession with a pass to Squirrel for no gain. Fourth possession started with a pass play, but Nico was pressured and scrambled for 2. Same for a second set of downs that possession. The fourth possession started with a Nico pass to TE Kitselman for 7 yards.

Second half, Fifth possession: opened with a 5 yard pass to Bru. Sixth possession: opened with a pass to Squirrel for 6. Seventh possession we did run on first down: Sampson scored. Eighth possession: Nico pressured trying to pass and scrambled for 4. Same possession, second series: Nico passed to Nimrod for 2. Third series was a DSamp run for 3. Fourth series: DSamp did run for 8 on first down. DSamp scored running for 4 on the next play. Ninth possession started with a run up the middle: Bishop gained 13. Same possession, second series: Bishop ran for 4. Series stalled when Nico attempted to pass but was sacked for a loss and then tackled scrambling under pressure for 4 on the next play. Tenth possession: both the first and second series started with runs by Sampson. That's prolly what your thinking of.

Check the remainder, if you like; I'm tired of it.
People believe what they want.

If the Vols lose Saturday god forbid this will be a disaster. Surely they can’t lose Saturday. Jeez.

Glad to see some of us are coming down to earth. Heup is much better than what we’ve had on the sidelines and Nico is as talented of a QB we’ve had in a very long time.

Let’s see how the team responds this week.
Would probably be worse if bama didn’t lose to vandy, playing on the road is always tough team didn’t play well. Hopefully the teams learns from it and moves on

I didn’t quite get on the Nico hype train as some did. I know he’s incredibly talented, but I went to the Citrus Bowl and I just remember more the scrambling than a bunch of amazing touch throws. He’s definitely made some good throws, but I never felt truly wowed as in “that’s amazing.”

Again, this is to say nothing about his talent or his potential. I think he can be truly great. I just was always uncomfortable with the “he’s gonna win the Heisman” sort of attitude that pervaded aspects of commentary in certain places. Potential is great! But unrealized, it’s just potential.
It is warranted. In his young career Nico has demonstrated that he can make throws that some NFL qb cannot make. Yes, he did not have a good game Saturday, not all his fault, but his a generational talent and we are lucky to have him.
I also remember people back in the day questioning Peyton.

He’s only scored less than 20 seven times at UT? Is that correct? If so, there’s nothing skewed about that except for the analysis. Big picture.

Edit: This is correct. He’s scored 40+ points against 14 P5 teams.

So i was watching a podcast this morning and yall let me know if yall agree.
1. They need to let Nico scramble more if nothing is open. Reason is they are scared he will get hurt.
2. Nico needs to just throw it and let his wide receivers be play makers and stop holding the ball.
3. Run the what is it 12 man offense and pound the rock.
4. Let a couple of the younger offensive lineman in the game to see what they can do.
5. Heupel needs to switch the offense up tremendously because defenses know how to play us now.

It was more but that's all I can remember lol, but what do you guys think. Do you think we lose players to the portal if they don't get no run, lose commits. I know it's one game too but we definitely gotta respond and asap.

1. Who could actually confirm they’ve told Nico not to scramble?
2. Agree but I suspect Nico isn’t seeing the field well or not trusting what he’s seeing
3. Could work. Opposing teams could and likely will (just a guess) start finding more creative ways to stack the box
4. We’re #8 and chasing a playoff spot. If we end up headed towards 7-5 then sure. Not now.
5. Defenses are switching up their entire structure that they play all season just for the Vols. Difficult to prepare for something you haven’t seen. And how do you prepare the team? Your practice time is limited, you can’t prepare the team for multiple different defenses throughout the week. Not sure exactly how to fix this quickly.

Every team loses players to the portal so yes. But I don’t think trimming the fat is a bad thing.

It is absolutely laughable how so many of you think winning an SEC road game is easy and we should be able to do it in our sleep. We played awful. No way to spin it. I am in a little bit of wait and see but the fact that many of you are already writing off Nico and Heupel is just plain stupid.
I woke up this morning still mad lol

I understand running the offense intentionally so as not to get the qb hurt. What I don’t understand is handcuffing the qb to keep him from making mistakes. Let the kid learn. Let him show his god given talent. Take the training wheels off the offense unless you’re fine with missing the playoffs.

My 2 cents
I agree

How do you know they’ve handcuffed him? And in what ways have they stopped him from showing his god given talent and kept the training wheels on? Be specific.
