Recruiting Football Talk VIII

I didn’t quite get on the Nico hype train as some did. I know he’s incredibly talented, but I went to the Citrus Bowl and I just remember more the scrambling than a bunch of amazing touch throws. He’s definitely made some good throws, but I never felt truly wowed as in “that’s amazing.”

Again, this is to say nothing about his talent or his potential. I think he can be truly great. I just was always uncomfortable with the “he’s gonna win the Heisman” sort of attitude that pervaded aspects of commentary in certain places. Potential is great! But unrealized, it’s just potential.
We beat arkansas by 3 scores if we played like we did vs Iowa. 3-4 big runs by Nico would've changed the game.

Nico pulling the handoff and running several times a game will help the backs get more yards, too. Right now, teams aren’t even bothering to really set the edge; just completely crashing inside on every handoff.

I know there’s injury risk, but that’s part of this offense. They have to take the chance.

You would be correct, IMO. The coaches know for sure now that Nico has development needs, so help him out while the O-line figures it out.

They went 12 personnel in the third quarter, not sure why they would wait until after half time to do that, but it worked well in that quarter. Then they went away from it again in the 4th quarter and lost the game. How many targets were to TEs - 3. Kitselman had two catches and was blown up on his last target late in the game. Nothing from the others. How many catches did Sampson and Bishop have - 1. Why is Seldon not playing when they have him returning kicks? He is big, fast and dynamic - use him. Both Sampson and Bishop averaged over 6 yards per carry - why not start out with and later go away from a successful run game with 12 personnel in a slugfest? I don't get it.

JMO - this issue is scheme and play calling. Heup went away from what he knows will work with a young QB and an O-line dealing with injured OT's. Help Nico out and build his confidence. It lands on Heup to fix it since it is his O and he is play calling.

I am confident he will figure it out and get them back on track. The ultimate prize is still in view.
From what I saw, I think Bishop is a liability in pass protection. Gotta think it is the same with Seldon, because like you said Bishop and Seldon are too good to keep on the bench otherwise.

Florida hate week!!

Vols 42
Gators 17

Within the friendly confines of Neyland we shall prevail bigly. Offense builds confidence.

Just praying for power by Saturday so I can have a semi-normal Saturday again. Buffalo wings and watching my favorite team in the universe play on tv. What a joy that would be, I won't take it for granted.
I think It'll make about 5 parlays and have every single one of them hinge of the Vols game. . . except this week I'll pick UF. That should guarantee a Vols win.

Also. . . I think Vandy is on the "do not bet against" list now. If we play them the way we played Arkansas and they play how they did against Bama, we'll be in trouble. . .

At the end of the day we held Arkansas to 19pts. 19pts should never, ever be enough to beat this Vols offense. If you told me Arkansas only scored 19, I would've said we beat them by at least 17pts.

We have got to eliminate the penalties. Even with how bad we played, if we eliminate half of those self-inflicted penalties, we still win.

Despite the loss this model now has us winning out. It was not predicting that prior, but Bama's loss likely suppressed them. This would of course require us playing to our potential. Still there is a chance.

I have reflected and no loss is good, but I would rather expose our weaknesses now with the hope of correction than to have them exposed when it is too late. It was a loss on the road in a week that a lot of people got upset. It hurts not nearly as much as a late loss would to a team like USC. Like 2022. We also need this offense better by playoffs and this forces that convo.

The one area i am not a fan of is saying this offense can't compete with the best. 2022 proved it could. The guy we miss most on this roster is Darnell Wright though.

RS Nico is not 5th year Hendon either. Hendon got benched twice on that journey. Nico is ahead of the curve, but nowhere near playoff ready at this point.

It looks like teams that think they can will emulate what Oklahoma and Arkansas did to limit us offensively. There are three to four teams left on our schedule that can do this. They may not be successful but they will try, I think.

Heupel has to take the training wheels off and let Nico go, also need to get Mathews on the field. I would like to see a four man formation with Matthews, White and Thornton and Bru or Brazzel on the field together, two long routes with one crossing and 1 curl, hit the open guy.

I don't think he ran the ball once. Scrambled yes, but no designed runs or options where he kept it. Maybe I missed it but I don't remember one.
Our playbook has consisted mostly of WR screens, inside zone runs, busted plays, and some deep shots. Playcalling HAS to adjust and be better.
