Recruiting Football Talk VIII

We got rat poisoned. 100%

Players loved the hype and took it all in for 2 weeks.

They did not keep emotional balance. They did not put in the effort required to get better each day.

Coaches and players got a big dose of rat poison.
Pretty inexcusable to allow that to happen when Heups teams have fallen on their face against inferior teams multiple times.

My friend said he thinks we are not trying to show anything for the Florida/Bama game. I don't buy that, think we got serious issues on offense.
We went through the we are not showing anything the 1st 3-4 games last year and we found out that the 1st 3-4 games was reality. I think the same thing is happening this year. Heup 2022 offense where he spread the WRs almost out of bounds was deadly and only Ga was able to stop it. Why he went away from that I dont know. But if he does not trust Nico then thats a problem , we thought he did not trust Joe.

Yea, but OU threw in wrinkles, and we won. There are games against good opponents where Heupel has won. The board just talks about the losses.
That was because of our defense, not the offense or Heup handling and adjusting. We struggled to consistently move the ball. Had less than 350 yards and over 100 of that came on 2 big plays. And when people pointed that out y’all blew it off

I mean, I certainly worry they bought some of their own hype. A truly elite team, which is what the media was pumping them up as, finds a way to win that game. It doesn’t make them “soft.” They’re a bunch of 18-23 year olds for the most part, after all.
That's what scares me is....yeah, a truly elite team easily finds a way to win that.

Up 14-3, we run into the punter, we play super conservative, knock their QB out who can't pass and still find a way to lose. Really bad.

I mean we can blow out everyone heading into Vandy and then just lose to them inexplicably. Heup has a reputation for inexplicable duds. I will not get my hopes up ever again because the unthinkable is always very possible.

I didn’t quite get on the Nico hype train as some did. I know he’s incredibly talented, but I went to the Citrus Bowl and I just remember more the scrambling than a bunch of amazing touch throws. He’s definitely made some good throws, but I never felt truly wowed as in “that’s amazing.”

Again, this is to say nothing about his talent or his potential. I think he can be truly great. I just was always uncomfortable with the “he’s gonna win the Heisman” sort of attitude that pervaded aspects of commentary in certain places. Potential is great! But unrealized, it’s just potential.
Absolutely, I was waiting until we actually played decent teams to make any judgement.
I’ll say he’s got a really high ceiling, and could be what we all hoped.
He’s definitely got a long way to go though.

It is insane this happens to us every year. South Carolina 2022 played the game of their entire lives. Not even counting the stealing our offensive signs. Spencer Rattler who was anemic all season dropped dimes in the pocket, under pressure, and on the run right over the hands of our DB's over and over again.
Yeah SC had a unbelievable game from rattler in 22.

That is not the case at all , what happened vs Arkansas.
Their QB made a couple really nice throws that’s it.
We had several opportunities in the passing game but O line , TE’s and RB’s all did poor blocking, And Nico wasn’t very good.

They were average and we still had a chance to win at the end and messed up then too.
Not even remotely similar.
We blew it Saturday. End of story

Florida hate week!!

Vols 42
Gators 17

Within the friendly confines of Neyland we shall prevail bigly. Offense builds confidence.

Just praying for power by Saturday so I can have a semi-normal Saturday again. Buffalo wings and watching my favorite team in the universe play on tv. What a joy that would be, I won't take it for granted.

Hey VN we could use some prayers from my son. He is a police officer in Nashville and was forced to use deadly force Friday night. He had only been with the force a year and one day. I will not share the video for content reasons, but if any of you are in LE or similar fields I would like your feedback. Just type in October 4 officer involved shooting Nashville in YouTube. My stomach has been in knots. I am just glad he is still with us. Great kid, graduated APSU Suma Cum Laude. He is a mess as you can imagine.
Hey man, just wanted to let you know that I had two buddies (both LE affiliated) watch the video and both also think it's a good shoot. And in fact, is a fairly good case of your son following training and SOP.
I know it's complicated and it sucks, but legally/consequences speaking, I dont think there is much here.

Now that Nico is out of the Heisman and all the talk about how good this team is will die off.Maybe they have been brought back down to earth and play ball.
I’m much more concerned about our talent at certain position than our overconfidence.
we had poor play at off tackle, safety, wide receiver, and QB when we finally played a decent team.
our first four games may have been fools gold and our performance vs Ark was the real us.
i hope to hell not. We will know Sunday morning.

Not talking so much about fans (though there are many for whom this is the case) as I am about the media. Josh Pate, Kirk Herbstreit, etc etc. — they love you as long as you’re winning.

Heck, I remember well when Herbstreit spread rumors about Tennessee’s “culture” following the 2022 SC loss, feeding into a narrative and really throwing shade on the program. I thought it was disgraceful but typical of media personalities.
Agreed. Speaking of Herbstreit, his pairing with Chris Fowler on the telecasts is maddening to me. Herbie loves to hear himself talk & Chris (Trailer Trash) Fowler is still a sanctimonious buffoon. Thought I'd never say this, folks: "Bring back Vern & Gary."

I just don't understand what's up with the play calling when the players have shown they can execute certain plays. W just haven't called the plays in 2 games now. No wacky formations Heupel is known for either. Just vanilla stuff with the same play call pattern.

"We got 5yds on 1st down again, what do you wanna do now?"

"You already know, run it up the middle, don't ask me again!"
I genuinely think every 1st down play vs ou and arky was a run up the middle

I remember first play of the arkansas game we actually ran an rpo and nico hit thorton on an out route, but Karic got called for being 4 yards downfield and it got called back.
Yeah, they call that every time we have a big pass play. Hard to get anything going down field when the only thing we are allowed to run is short stuff and holds are never called against them.

Let's start with our first play at Arkie. Nico passed to Thornton for 15 yards. It was called back for ineligible receiver downfield. The second time we tried to throw on first down (during our second possession) Nico was sacked. We began our third possession with a pass to Squirrel for no gain. Fourth possession started with a pass play, but Nico was pressured and scrambled for 2. Same for a second set of downs that possession. The fourth possession started with a Nico pass to TE Kitselman for 7 yards.

Second half, Fifth possession: opened with a 5 yard pass to Bru. Sixth possession: opened with a pass to Squirrel for 6. Seventh possession we did run on first down: Sampson scored. Eighth possession: Nico pressured trying to pass and scrambled for 4. Same possession, second series: Nico passed to Nimrod for 2. Third series was a DSamp run for 3. Fourth series: DSamp did run for 8 on first down. DSamp scored running for 4 on the next play. Ninth possession started with a run up the middle: Bishop gained 13. Same possession, second series: Bishop ran for 4. Series stalled when Nico attempted to pass but was sacked for a loss and then tackled scrambling under pressure for 4 on the next play. Tenth possession: both the first and second series started with runs by Sampson. That's prolly what your thinking of.

Check the remainder, if you like; I'm tired of it.

horrible offensive gameplan. In fact what was the gameplan?

These messages have me cracked up yesterday and today. Happy Monday fam.

October 7, 2024: You might find that you have been defeated, but you are not destroyed. Continue to press through difficulties of this time with consistency and strength of will. Stay within the confines of what is spiritually and morally correct, and rely on supernatural help to gain the victory, says the Lord. 2 Corinthians 4:8-9 We are hard pressed on every side, but not crushed; perplexed, but not in despair; persecuted, but not abandoned; struck down, but not destroyed.

We failed to do well on offense because they stuffed our run with a light box. They did it as well as UGA has. Honestly it might be rhe best since UGA. Oklahoma and NC state tried, but failed. UGA is the next team that likely could do the same. Their D line is a notch worse though. Bama has struggled in this area. USC and KY will try and we will see. Both have veteran lines. 9-3 won't be crazy if Nico and the O line don't step up.

Any time we look stupid this is usually the culprit. Our recievers are running into lots of coverage, our QB is passing or running into it.
