Recruiting Football Talk VIII

You are correct. But, look at the details of his games played that year and I'm not sure how many others were legitimate candidates for a spot on the team.

"Heard was thrust into action during the first quarter of LSU’s win over Auburn when Jones went down with an injury. Heard played a career-high 59 snaps against Auburn, helping the Tiger offense to 568 total yards, including 238 on the ground, in the 48-18 victory.

In the win over Army, Heard saw action on 58 snaps as the Tigers rolled up 570 yards of offense, 202 on the ground, in the 62-0 victory.

Heard appeared on LSU’s protection units for field goals and point-after touchdowns in every game. His other extensive action came in the win over Grambling when he played 54 snaps in his Tiger Stadium debut."
He did grade out pretty decently

I thought this same thing this morning. Taking Nico out at half time probably wasn't the best idea. Not just the lost reps, but the attitude it shows the players is "we take our foot off the gas when we get a lead." You can tell the players have adopted that philosophy.

Same with OU, yes we won the game, but coaches have told players with their play calling "we are not a team who keeps our foot on the gas when we get a lead."
We lack an identity on offense. Are we a high-scoring offense? Are we a low-scoring grind-it-out team that plays field position and wins with defense? Is Nico a playmaker or a game manager? Is he learning on the job, and if so, why is Heupel not letting him learn? Especially with a good defense that has shown it can erase mistakes.

I just feel like we're a mess offensively and it goes back to not being able to flex our muscles against anyone with a pulse. Again, I don't want to second guess Heupel because it's a hard decision and he very well may have won in Norman because of his game management. But it seems like the team's identity is "play wide open when things are going well and immediately go into a shell when we hit adversity."

We did not have that luxury in 2022 and that's why the offense was so consistently good.

Gotta take care of business vs Florida, Kentucky, Vanderbilt, Mississippi State and UTEP. Then win either the Alabama or Georgia game.

10-2 gets you in playoffs, 9-3 gets you the PopTart Bowl again...

Yes plove he sits back there and pats the ball like he's trying to burp a baby.

Hooker was a great QB for this offense because he was fearless, he was tough, and he was decisive.

He'd drop back and get the hell on if the play wasn't developing as intended. Sometimes he'd make a read before the snap and decide he was gonna run anyway. Pair his decisiveness and mobility with hyper tempo and it was a nightmare for defenses.

We are not running the offense that terrified DCs right now, and Nico does not seem to be playing comfortably or naturally at all. His seemingly only "eff it, go time" play was the bomb to Thornton late, which was his longest completion.

He seems to be struggling with the series of if-then statements that this offense has turned into.
The opening comment, lmao

I know it’s not just Tennessee, but these teams need to do something to these damn refs. I’d like to see a team threaten to not play the rest of a game if holding calls go missed. The SEC and TV providers would stroke out.
College needs to hire full time refs like the NFL. Not just for football, but all sports.

Hooker came to Knoxville with a chip on his shoulder and a desire to prove himself. He was basically a nobody who created no buzz when he left VT for here. Nico has been anointed as a superstar for years now.

I still think Nico can be great because he's enormously talented, but attitude matters. Compare that to Arch, who I think is a little less talented but has a chip on his shoulder for very different reasons than Hooker (namely, trying to get out of his uncles' shadows).

Coach Heupel’s QBs through their first 5 games being a full time starter.

Hooker (Pitt, TTU, FL, Mizz, USCjr)
- 1058 passing yards
- 13 TD / 1 Int
- 278 rushing
- 3 TDs

Milton (Virginia, AP, FL, Texas-San Antonio, USCjr)
- 1164 passing yards
- 9 TD / 3 Int
- 139 rushing
- 4 TD

Nico (Chatt, NSCT, Kent St, OU, Ark)
- 1050 passing yards
- 7 TD / 2 Int
- 134 rushing
- 1 TD

Just wanted to compare all 3 QBs that have been under Heupel. Also keep in mind two upperclassmen vs a freshman.

If Nico would’ve played like himself against Arkansas, his stats would probably be higher the most impressive here.

If Joe Milton never gets injured Hooker probably remains backup while at Tennessee. CJH was infatuated with Milton.

You're clearly missing Nico's first game as a starter in last year's bowl game because he had multiple TD's rushing.
