Recruiting Football Talk VIII

The two biggest indictments thus far onnthis regime:

1- situation with the OL, lack of development has to be addressed.

the line we saw in OT drive, is line we saw versus NC State, and OK.

Is it effort? Is it talent? Is it scheme? Those are all on the coaches.

2- WR separation.

Thornton and Squirrel are consistently the only open WR's, that can make hand or contested catches. Also, seem to be only 'open' receivers.

The plan this game was so much better. We do better when we distribute the ball. Saw Davis and Notre Dame dude getting involved. Saw Sampson targeted for passes. Even saw Nico rolling left and right.

Offense took a step in that regard. It is evolving.

Meanwhile, if our WR's arent getting separation. Then what're we doing? Doesnt do us any good to have Braylon Staley and Mike Matthews ride the pine.

Where is their development? Get them some touches. Scheme something up. We HAVE to get them involved to break a big TD to best Bama.
In the WR I've always thought Bru has played on the wrong side. Why is he lineup up on the left as the solo WR more times than not? He would block on the screens better and I would think having Squirrel next to him as the deep threat would give him more room on underneath possession routes. I always thought this offense works better when the receiver on the left is a HR threat.

Another thing: On Nico.

His regression from dead accurate to inaccurate. Makes me wonder if he is fighting an injury no one is aware of?
It's all mental. You see this even in the NFL. Once a qb doesn't feel reliably protected, his accuracy, vision, decision-making, etc...all start to deteriorate.

You saw this on a micro level with Brady in the ATL super bowl. He was getting pressured every other play in the first half. Looked like a scrub qb.

They brought in extra protection in the 2nd half, and he looked like the GOAT

Yes sir!

How many times have we been 5-1 or better halfway through the season since Fulmer?

Twice?

And we now have OU and UF as notches in our belt. Things we only dreamt of years past.
Vols have started 5-1 or better 8 times in the last 26 seasons (since 1998). Heupel has 3 of those 8 in his 4 seasons here.

Few observations after being at the game last night.

The defense is legit as advertised. The only position group that isn’t cutting it is Safeties. Everybody knows about the front 7, but the CBs played really well. McCoy and Gibson are good. The safeties still leave something to be desired.

Our WRs get open more than I thought they did. Seeing it live there were several plays were they got open but we couldn’t get the ball to them. They also have to fix the drops. Don’t see why Matthew’s isn’t in over Nimrod. Give him a chance.

Sampson carried the offense.

OL is down bad. Seeing it in person our OL was getting cooked and not playing as a unit. Not much else to say.

Nico is not playing well. He is indecisive and seeing ghosts. Pat of that is on the OL. He is facing so much pressure he is feeling pressure that isn’t there and getting happy feet. He also waits too long to make decisions. That part can be improved.

Any win against Florida is good, but that game didn’t need to be that hard. GBO.

Beating UF and then Bama on back to back weekends would do wonders to help my progress of healing my BVS. Please, give it to me football gods.
It will be pretty interesting to see how the fanbase responds to two ugly wins in a row at home over our most bitter rivals. We should be overjoyed at that result but if the offense still struggles there will be a lot of unhappy fans, which will be ridiculous.

Id like to see Nico at lease improve a little week to week, but he hasnt shown any sort of improvement since the OU game. I know our OL has really struggled, and that is definitely a part of it, but still, some of his throws has been really inaccurate and decision making has been bad as well

Confession:

I bet on Florida +15.5. Not happy to win that, but I may as well make money. The way I see it is I will happily pay $100 (lose the bet) for Tennessee to win by more than two touchdowns.

Free financial advice:

The over/under next week vs Alabama is 55.5. The under should be free money.
