I personally think that Saban simply lacked the energy to do it anymore. It is normal for any human, I questioned that about Nick a few times, to want to rest from their labor and enjoy the fruits of it. The most remarkable thing about Nick Saban to me is his ability to not become complacent and not allow his players to become complacent. As coach it is very difficult to have team retain its edge after they have won a championship and heard how great they are for awhile. It is amazes me that Nick was able to do it for 15 years.Might not be a popular opinion, but I think they'd be having a similar season had Saban stayed. They had been falling off from their peak under Saban each of the last few years and went from a very disciplined team to one that shot themselves in the foot often. Maybe they get more favorable officiating if Saban was still coach, but I doubt they'd be much better had he stayed. All the legendary coaches that keep coaching into their 70s see their team's on-field performance fall off and I think Saban even saw it coming. It's too hard to micro-manage on the level Saban used to when he's in his 70s.
Nick simply saw that he couldn't go as hard as was necessary and didn't want to just fade out.
