Recruiting Football Talk VIII

I interpret that as: "Mike is insanely talented and we want him on the field because he makes us better on offense but there's still some little things he's not doing right and an attention to detail aspect of it that has kept him off the field. If he fixes those things and buys in then he will be huge for us in the final stretch."

Anyone else?

Bit of a look ahead with just 5 weeks left of regular season SEC play.

Texas A&M in the driver's seat, undefeated in the SEC and Texas is the only ranked team left on their schedule. Don't be surprised though if they go lose at South Carolina this weekend. The fighting Beamers are coming off a bye week and with a DL like they have anything is possible. Also despite being a 3 loss team only Ole Miss really put a beating on them...they were in both the LSU and Bama games until the final few minutes.

Georgia, Texas, Tennessee, LSU all with 1 loss and still a chance at Atlanta as well as playoffs on the line.

Georgia has to play at Ole Miss and then host Vols
Texas has at A&M to end the season and should be able to coast into that one. At Arkansas on the 16th is a noon game, so there's a chance they sleepwalk there but I think losing to Georgia and surviving at Vandy will be enough to have them refocused
LSU host Bama next weekend after a bye, that game will basically be for both of their seasons really...if either loses they're most likely out of the playoff hunt completely with 3 losses. Gonna be a good one, probably ends up as a night game as well.
Vols have 2 home games that should be tune-ups before going to Athens and playing for the chance to go to Atlanta. Even if we beat Georgia I don't think the team will overlook at Vandy to end the year. They really could be undefeated right now...all 3 losses have been by 1 possession and 2 of them were road games in September.

I like how the year has shaped out, we're in a great spot and still haven't seen our offense really play a great game. We've only went over 500 yards twice, Chattanooga & Kent State. All 3 games the defense gave up 300 yards in were games the offense put them on the field 70+ plays.

Lol
CRB would be thrown under the bus and told he’s not a true fan if he said that on here

In all honesty it was an exhibition and they will improve as the season goes
We got 4 new transfers and takes a few games to get going
I think we have a team talent wise that can finally win it all for CRB
Rick Barnes is a Nega Vol

Do yall think this is what we experienced after the fulmer down fall or just bad coaching hires overall?…seemed like we were always talking about culture here during those times..this is a nice in depth breakdown..

I'm tired of all the overanalysis about stupid ass Bama

You know what it is?

THEY LOST 30+ PLAYERS FROM A YEAR AGO AND A COACH

This is the best Vandy team since lord knows when and they played a TN team with the best defense in the country IN NEYLAND.

They also just aren't as talented. Nick Saban would not have this exact team playing that much better if at all. The last two Saban teams were similar! I mean it's just so dumb.

Last year we should've held on and beat them, they got smacked by Texas, almost lost to USF and Arkansas. Should have lost to Auburn. Needed a literal miracle.

Same crap two years ago.

The thing is...everyone else is BETTER now. The SEC is as strong as it's ever been. THAT is why they aren't dominating. Periodt.

Agree. But let the Bammers keep thinking it’s them. That just might send them down the coach merry-go-round we got to enjoy for a while.

They'll figure out real quick against LSU that they didn't figure out diddly squat when Nussmeier starts lighting them up.

Mizzou's QB situation was literally super saiyan JG level bad on Saturday.

Proposal to improve transfer portal:

Transfer buyouts. When a player transfers, the receiving school has to pay the original school 1 year of the original NIL contract amount OR 1 year of future NIL contract amount, whichever is greater. This rewards small schools for finding and developing players into D1 prospects. So no longer do the small schools have to totally rely on getting pummeled by big schools for a payday, they can also sustain their programs and facilities on developing underrecruited project guys.

It also reduces the size of transfer contracts so fewer of those guys shopping for a huge payday because schools know they'll have to pay double. It might also reduce the size of high school signee contracts and encourage guys to stay at a school. Example: If a guy like Nico with a giant contract gets benched, he may not have a lot of suitors willing to pay Tennessee that buyout, so Nico is better off staying at UT and earning his job back.

Then, when a school fires a coaching staff and a bunch of guys transfer, the new coach likely will have a substantial pile of NIL money to work with from transfer buyouts to rebuild a roster year 1.

Overall, increases parity by helping small school create revenue and decreases time to rebuilding programs. This would probably not be popular with programs like ours who currently benefit from being at the top of the totem pole, but probably benefits the sport as a whole.
Something will be done because the current situation is unsustainable. The players hold all the cards and are taking advantage of the power vacuum that was created with the death of the NCAA. I can't and won't remain that the players can at any point take the money and run or quit and leave midseason.
Once the power structure of CFB is all sorted out NIL and the portal will be taken care of.

Not just talent wise, but size. I pointed it out in the basketball forum, Indiana played 3 guys 30+ minutes that were all 6'9" or bigger. We won the rebounding and had more blocked shots. That's a game we walk away with if we shoot better than 23% from 3 in. (most of those misses coming from ZZ & Lanier).

at Louisville for the 2nd game of the season is probably going to be tough, I hope this Indiana game pays dividends towards that one. They're coming off 8-24 though so other than just star gazing not sure how good they're actually going to be, but last year they only had 1 upper class men that really played, BHH. So they'll likely be a good test this early in the year for us.

We'll be pretty damn battle tested though before SEC play starts.

at Louisville
vs Virginia and then either Baylor or St. John's in the Bahamas tournament
vs Syracuse in the SEC/ACC challenge
vs Miami in Madison Square Garden for Jimmy V Classic
at Illinois

All that before Christmas!

I agree on all this but you failed to mention this on salient point, Alabama sucks.

I interpret that as: "Mike is insanely talented and we want him on the field because he makes us better on offense but there's still some little things he's not doing right and an attention to detail aspect of it that has kept him off the field. If he fixes those things and buys in then he will be huge for us in the final stretch."

I would hope that is the interpretation because otherwise it’s weird to say you want him to make an impact on the field when he is barely seeing the field at all. Hoping with Squirrel being banged up we’ve used the bye week to get MM up to speed we really need him down this stretch.

Yeah, I think it's even simpler than that honestly. He's not had a great week of practice to warrant being on the field more. Either too many drops, not running the right routes or missing assignments.

The reason why the WRs so often look like they're beating blown coverages when things are clicking is because it's a well oiled machine of both the play calling, QB, and WR all hitting at the right time.

I’m puzzled with some folks complaining about all of the night games this season. This is the byproduct of being relevant and good again.

If this is the old 5-7 or 7-5 Tennessee teams from 09-21, it would be a lot more noon games on the SEC Network or another secondary ESPN network.

Get used to playing night games. We will be playing those for years to come, as long as we are good. ESPN wants to showcase its best teams in primetime.

One big reason folks complain is if we're the "primetime" night game they usually load us up with commercials. Something that's more difficult to do for the earlier games because they have to finish them on schedule.

Pissed me off so much being on campus when we sucked. Never got night games unless it was an away game. I think we had like 4 home night games the 4 years I was in Knoxville.

I'm as negative as they come, but the short answer is...... A ton of new faces it's going to be ugly at first until they get.

My long answer is, once again we shoot way too many jumpers, and will once again live and die by them. We dont have an above the rim finisher among our guards.

I was just talking to my mom on the phone about this. This is what happens when you’re good lol

I'm hoping Cameron Carr gets it together and can take some minutes from Gainey. I'm thinking he's going to be our "breakout" player this season. The potential is there for him to be that above the rim finisher.

*I agree with you, jacking up a bunch of 3s and midrange jump shots is not what I want to see out of this team.
