Recruiting Football Talk VIII

On this whole Mike Mathews thing, once again the consensus on Volnation runs down the rabbit hole of "the coaches are idiots for not playing insert up and coming player here." Last year it was Nico, a few years ago it was Harrison Bailey. Every year it is somebody. This brain dead knee jerk only takes second place to "Insert coach name here is completely incompetent and needs fired yesterday."
Having not seen one practice and with next to no knowledge of what is really going on people deem a player the solution to all problems. If MM were ready and the coaches thought he would be a significant contributor, you can bet your sweet hiney his azz would be in the game.
Most fans are just like the talking heads, boldly making predictions and proclaiming solutions with insider knowledge and when they are wrong or it goes badly, they are nowhere to be found or they rewrite history.
In my experience the real coaches who are idiots are the ones that listen to the fans, they usually end up looking like fools. Saban didn't give a 50 lb bag of rat poison about what the fans thought.
I agree. You only need watch the performances of:

Boo Carter
D. Bishop
Squirrel White ( his freshman year)
Jackson Moi
And conversely
Nico (this year)

To know for a certainty that guys that earn time get time. I hope Mike earns time, but that is different than just giving him some.

I think the problem is twofold. One NFL GMs are far too impressed by a player's measurables. Have a good showing one day at combine or pro-day and your draft stock soars. Many of the great qbs literally didn't measure up. Joe Montana, look at his physical makeup alone and he is unremarkable. Peyton never had a great arm but at least he was slow. Tom Brady not exactly a physical specimen. They were great because of their preparation and mental approach. They were relentless students of the game and had the attitude that excuses were lies.
The money and the win right now mentality is the other thing. Today's qbs are forced to rely sole on they're athleticism and don't develop mentally. Teams invest so much in the qb position that there is tremendous pressure to play them right away. Qbs don't get time to learn the game and develop, they are thrown into the fire prematurely. The fans, the media both clamor for them to play and the coach whose on the hot seat gives in.

Obviously, he shouldn't play if he is out there looking like **** but I doubt that is the case tbh. We have been pretty banged up and the short time he was in, he made the most impressive TD catch of the year for us so far. There has to be a way to work him in somehow.

Matthews comments read to me as coach speak for “get your ass in gear and learn the book or you won’t be playing”

If a guy is out of position because he’s not on his route tree that’s a huge turnover liability

Rinse and repeat. I do not think pointing this out will help those posters/fans at all. They will continue doing what they do. But yes the point is completely accurate.

I could make the argument that the ACC and the Big 12 are a joke. Both should only get one in as a wild card. I would argue that Notre Dame should already be out of it with a FCS loss. I would also argue that the BIG 10 should only get 2 max in. That conference is terrible with a down USC and Michigan. Unfortunately, I do not believe they will want 4-5 SEC teams in regardless of the fact that the SEC deserves just that.
Northern Illinois plays in the MAC conference not an FCS school. But yes Notre Dame lost to a 4-4 team they had no Business losing too.

And teach him what about how this system flourishes? Mike is in the same camp as the tight ends. They want to play Kitselman less, but he does the most things the right way. Other guys have had plays and time, but Kitselman is like 80% of snaps. The other guys need to get the other aspects down besides just catching a ball....

Who thinks we fire on all cylinders and put up more than 30 on UK?
I just want to win at the end of the day, but my hope is certainly that we look competent in a first half at least on the way to doing that. If we go into halftime with a goose egg on the scoreboard again my liver might not survive.

Careful Raleigh, you'll be pegged a 'realist.'

@enki812 with thoust permission.

A discussion on football.

We need Moi Polynesian players.

Do what you want, you've never heard me tell anyone what they should or shouldn't talk about.

I’m getting the opposite feel from all this Matthews talk. Is he not developing or grasping the playbook?
Not yet but he is a freshman and he was injured during a portion of Fall practice something that’s been discussed on here for quite awhile and should be known by fans on this board…

It's more of a combination of development and evaluating players. How many solid QB's rarely see the field in the NFL due to organizations marketing a specific guy (their guy) when all logic tells you this doesn't make any gosh dang sense. The NFL doesn't give a **** about the product on the field, they just care about monies.

Gambled, was a poor attempt at humor, playing off your comment. 👀 Swidt?

That said, wouldnt you like to have a dedicated, stickied gambling specific thread? One where you could post infinite screen shots of beating lady luck!

Fwiw, I enjoy the back and forth. Talking **** is a completely underrated pastime.
