Recruiting Football Talk VIII

Why are you guys all arguing with @jave36? He's already agreed that he doesn't like it; just giving examples of how it 'is'.

This entire conversation has been a few of us warning what may happen if we don't win out, and pointing out that our potential 10-2, as it now stands, doesn't look as strong as we thought a BAMA/UGA 10-2 may look for our chances in the playoff. We've been accused, almost to the extent that we're predicting it and hoping for it. Now, with the historic examples and lens into the playoff's committee's mindset, can we all just agree that things are a bit more worrisome at 10-2 than we expected a 10-2 to be before the season started?
Exactly, although arguing (discussing) wink, wink is the VolNation way..

Our own sports writers need to be writing articles blasting anyone who thinks we don’t get in instead of following the current narrative

Clemson, Iowa st and tejas A&M all needed to lose for us and they did and now we’re still not supposedly in

They need to start writing articles of why we should be in and quit acting like pawl, and some of these other people in keeping us out

Well they make their money from Tennessee fans reading their stuff. So if you want them to be positive stop giving them clicks when they write negative things.

I think Tennessee fans just enjoy negativity. They'd rather hear how they're not gonna make the playoffs and how they're team isn't good than to hear good news. They'll use the excuse of battered vols syndrome. I personally don't buy it. I just think they're losers who have a loser mentality.

Should, no doubt. Should. But I really think LSU could lose a 3rd game regardless and I don’t trust the committee to value head to head (common sense). The best solution is just beating Georgia’s ass. Vandy in current state would be a nice road win. So 10-2 may be just fine.
If you want to predict the committee's decisions quit worrying about records and SOS and such. Look at potential matchups and storylines for television.

Need to pull for LSU this week because they could easily lose to Vandy or at Florida honestly.

Are you dumb? Alabama is literally the only thing keeping our playoff hopes alive. We need them to win out. Because we hold the tie-breaker over them they have no chance to pass us in the standings for the SEC Championship Game. LSU however could easily pass us. And if they beat Alabama they're not easily losing to Florida or Vandy.

Do we think Cam is transferring?
Yes, unfortunate but the kid can’t stay healthy and I think he sees the writing on the wall next year with Bishop and Lewis. I would hope he doesn’t. He could easily be a monster in this offense but seems the kid’s body is made of glass. Not trying to knock the kid. Just is what it is.

(The obvious preference is, beat UGA and everyone else left on our schedule. Then beat everyone in the playoff as well.)
I’ve always said that I don’t trust humans and committees but that 10-2 should get us in. I haven’t changed that stance.

That’s “how it is” is flawed though. Bama/UT in 2022 and Bama/FSU last year were very different situations.

I agree, but we saw the final rankings in 2022. They have set a precedent already. Just win and it doesn't matter.

We also lost by 30 points at South Carolina while Alabama two losses that year were by one possession. They deserved to be ranked ahead of us. They were the better team that year. We were just lucky to beat them that day. We play them 10 times in 2022 we might win 2 or 3 times tops.

Agree with the first. Partially agree with the second, as there is definitely a segment out there that thrives on multiplying the ripples when even a slightly negative media take hits the water, and just can't help themselves but driving clicks to click-bait dumbassery.

But I've also noticed that a LOT of non-UT media creators have started making hugely positive UT-related content. Why? Because they know that if you say something good about UT, you'll get massive, healthy traffic from it. Can't just lump a huge fanbase like UT into a broad brush like that.

Also, to reiterate... STOP FEEDING NEGATIVE CLICK-BAIT, FOLKS! LEARN SOME SELF CONTROL.

Here’s an interesting scenario:

We win out reg season, we will be in the seccg. If we lose that game, we will still be in the cfp no doubt, but would we be in the 5-8 range and hosting, or 9-11 range?
If we go 11-1 reg season and lose a close SECCG, we should be #5-7. . . unless we get an injury to our long snapper. In that case, cancel the post season.

All this playoff scenario talk is a waste of time right now. I only care about what we'll see from the team against Mississippi State. Hopefully they get Thornton more involved in the passing game early...maybe even get Sampson a few catches...and put a TD on the board early in the first quarter. Nico is rounding into form and him having another good game before playing UGA is important for his confidence before going on the road against a team that's probably going to go all out to pressure him. Mississippi State also has a better offense than Kentucky, so they won't be a complete pushover for our defense.

We need to see a complete game in all phases with a convincing win that continues to build momentum and confidence for this team before heading to Athens. Beat UGA and the playoff stuff handles itself.
We should double move Thornton deep about 5-6 times a game. He and Bru are the only people catching anything. . . maybe give Mike Matthews a shot. I hate the thought of having him get almost no reps, but expecting him to be a major player next year. . .

I mean technically you are knocking him by speculating about his possible departure in which there has been no reason given he will or not other than injuries which happens a lot in football.

He definitely could go and has every right if that is what he wants to do, but I’m not sure it’s right of us to act like we are not “knocking” him when we are speculating about him.

Sort of does damage to the "head to head matters, Bama will never get in ahead of us with a win over them" narrative.

It's hard to believe you are defending alabama being ranked ahead of us with the same record and a loss head to head. . .

It's easy to defend the better team. Alabama was better than us that year despite the head to head win. We are better than them this year. In 2022 it took an A+ game from us to barely win. This year we played a C+ game and won more comfortably.

If he was smart, he’d stick around. Look at how many guys in this offense make a huge jump in year 3 (Wright, Sampson). Heck, even Jabari Small had 13 TD’s as a junior.

I hope he looks at Sampson and how he patiently waited his turn and sticks around.
Plus, on top of that, where's he gonna go? Is it worth going to a team that isn't competing on a national level to be closer to home or get more PT? He'll get as much PT here as he would anywhere else next year and we're a top10 program. I imagine the NIL for him will be much better for him there too. . . since all the fans know his name, really like him, and would support any company that signs him.

It would be a poor decision to leave what he's worked for for 2 years here, based on what we know. Maybe there would be something we don't know, but I'd still try to work out any other issues before going to start over at a lesser program.

There is a good chance he'll be in the playoffs the next couple years here, maybe playing for a title. It would be crazy to leave that kind of exposure and opportunity after putting so much work in.

Pretty damning.

I like Josh Pate usually but this is ridiculous. Just last week he had Clemson 5th in his power ratings. He was waxing poetically about how they were coming on for a potential playoff run. He also all but guaranteed they would beat Louisville based on them coming off a bye and Louisville playing 7 straight games. And now he says they're essentially done as an elite program. Seriously?

I don't disagree with his ultimate conclusion but why hype them up for weeks now. I found it hilarious the media was crowning Clemson the last month or so because they've been beating up on bad teams. They only teams above. 500 they've faced this year are Georgia and Louisville and both teams dog walked them. Josh Pate should have never bought into them.

Look I know you're a soccer guy, and my daddy always told me not to speak definitively on things unless I knew the subject (he said it a little differenter). The statement that we are not dynamic is absolute insanity. The problem has been injuries and inexperience period. The new guys are starting to get it and we are getting healthy.
If you listen to Heup talk you can hear it that he is frustrated because he know just how dynamic this offense is and will be. He doesn't say it when asked about the offense he bites his lower lip and just kinda turns his head. When this is all said and done we will be a monster.
Making a statement of potential dynamism versus current, lack thereof. You can condescend about purported or perceived football knowledge deficiencies, but my statement stands.

See my post on USF offense. Run properly it is very effective.
