Recruiting Football Talk VIII

While I agree you need a guy that can paint a picture on radio, some of these guys have done both. I am pretty sure Tessitore has done radio on ESPN. Dan Shulman is great and does both.

Some of these names being tossed around are analysts. Even though I like them, Charles Davis and Dane Bradshaw aren't play by play guys. If Pat Ryan leaves, too, then you find a good fit with the new play by play guy.
I didn't know that about Tessitore. I still think he's too far over the top and comes off as fake. I also think he might be a closet bama fan.

If the announcer is going to be loud, I want it to be authentic.

I think DW will find an up and coming guy. He’s good at that.

I actually have no idea if DW makes the hire?

Wilkerson calls Knox Catholic football games. I've heard his calls twice and he's not too bad. I listened a couple of weeks ago and it was much better than the 1st time. He's not as smooth on football as he is on baseball. I think he would struggle with basketball.

Mike Keith should be the 1st call.

*I've been working and just responding to alerts. Has anyone mentioned the guy that does Miss State games? I think he's from the mid state of Tennessee and I think he's pretty good.
Neil Price is the MSU radio guy- he's from Morristown. There is also Roger Hoover that was mentioned in an article. He does Bama baseball and works on both basketball and football. He's a UT grad and started with the Vol Network.

Yes..... Neil Price!!

Pass on Roger Hoover. Unfortunately, we won't be able to get that bama Gump off of him. Look what it did to Pawl Finebauma.

Stan Cotten (27 yrs as voice of WF) is a UT grad also, but might only work another 10-12 years.

I don't mind Tessatore on TV (and I mind a lot of them). But I would like to be able to hear his radio work before passing judgment.

If he were 40 years younger and our sidelines folks didn't mind being called "honey", Ron Franklin was one of the TV guys with a radio voice.

Well I guess he has done it at least once, but I don't think that's ever been a regular thing for him.
He's now busy doing multiple sports with football, boxing, and WWE. My point was that many of the good ones have done radio at some point, especially before we had so many channels. I see Tessitore has done at least another big NY6 bowl on radio in the last 10-12 years (Edit: He did the 2022 Chick Fil A Bowl with Greg McElroy on radio and also the 2020 Rose Bowl with Andre Ware). But guys like Sean McDonough, Mike Tirico, and Brad Nessler have also done big games on radio in the past.

Mike Keith would be a very long shot right? Is that realistic or does he own land in East TN or have a wife that graduated from UT? Anyone seen him in town at Calhoun's or even Applebee's recently?

Edit: Or I'll just catch up and read everyone talking about it.

There are some good dual medium guys for sure, but radio is a totally different animal from TV, so I'd prefer someone who's spent their career doing it well instead of someone who's dabbled in it as a side gig for major games where ESPN wants to tout big names for a broadcast in order to draw viewers (or listeners rather).

John Wilkerson deserves the job...if he wants it.
Eh. Nobody deserves it. Find the best possible play by play person out there. If that's Wilkerson, great, but I'd like to see us cast a wider net to make sure we get the best. Going with the local guy instead of finding the best available is what got us stuck with Kesling in the first place.
