Recruiting Football Talk VIII

Yeah, I don't agree. I think only one Big 12 team makes it. Same with the ACC. I think what benefits us is either Notre Dame, one of the Big 10 teams, or one of the other SEC teams stumbling. That's where we could potentially find a spot.
I also think only one Big 12 team would have made it in… but if it comes down to Tennessee or a second Big 12 team, never underestimate the propensity of the powers that be to find a way.

Suffice it to say, I’m glad to see BYU take a loss.

Nah, it is what it is. Banks was the only one to take the job. I was hopeful that he'd grow in the position but here we are watching the same crap we saw 4 years ago. 4th and 30+ dropping 8 into coverage and allowing Will Levis to throw a pass to a wide open reciever 40 yards down field. The same no pressure/no cover scheme.

Frustrating for sure. Think we just disagree on the final story being written. Also don’t think we’ll get to find out bc Banks will take a HC job somewhere soon.

Counterpoint.

2007, Georgia Dome. Lost to a freshman QB in SECCG.

Let's understand that after sitting in freezing ass December cold, nosebleeds Neyland watching us get it handed to us by Vandy.
Many, many, many games in between. Too many to include in this rant...

Dooley ball, Butch ball, Pruitt ball.

We want to win. At a high level. And, while i'm appreciative wins. Dont tell me to eat ****, and call it sugar. There are glaring issues. If it makes me 'entitled' then so ****ing be it.

You think those Georgia and Alabama pricks would take this, more specifically a loss to Arkansas well? Its one thing to lose to UGA on the road, another to have same OL/WR/ and Defensive issues year in and out. Then to lose at Arkansas.

To the cocksure, know it all, windbags. We bleed orange. We are so close to turning the corner. And guess what Huepel helped created those expectations.

Those ok with status quo, or complacency can be ashamed.
"We are so close, a mere 3.5 years after being in the torment I just described, so let's all bitch, moan, cry, and call for coaches' jobs because we are so close to turning the corner. We've been on a much greater trajectory than any of us could have hoped for when he was hired, so let's demand changes!"

The incredible stupidity here is that you just admitted that the past 4 years have been formerly unimaginable improvement, yet you're also soiling your maxi by bemoaning it as 'status quo'.

Hint for you: Those UGA and Alabama 'pricks' got their entitlement honestly, by jumping on already-winning bandwagons. If that's what you need to endure football, jump on. Otherwise, grow up, learn how to deal with disappointment, and enjoy the build.

That’s a ridiculous overreaction. Heupel has played Kirby 4x. Kirby has had a roster advantage every time, though the gap is narrowing. Vastly overmatched in 2021. 2022 and 2024 were competitive in Athens.
The final score would indicate that, but watching both games, you never thought Tennessee stood a legitimate chance in the 2nd half. Both were 2 TD margins, but UGA took the gas off in 2022 up 24-6 at HT, and then put the gas on after spotting a 10-pt lead, last night, outscoring Tennessee 31-7.

So, if the definition of competitive is that we didn't get beat by 4 TDs, then I guess you're right, but neither game was ever threatened in the 2nd half.

Careful someone called me an idiot for saying we smidge by teams.

1 quality win
And 3-4 wins by 10 points….at home
It’s crazy the amount of people on here who only see thru the lenses of their orange glasses and can’t actually see things for what they are, like our sos and the fact we’ve barely beaten mediocre teams

The only team that has truly won on the road…Georgia at Texas and walloped by ole miss. It’s tough to win on the road for every team
Yep. And even then, they still have 2 road losses like us.

Vols 2 road Ls (Arky and UGA) 8-2
UGA 2 road Ls (OM and Bama) 8-2
Bama 2 road Ls (Vols and Vandy) 8-2
OM 1 road L (LSU), 1 home L (UK) 8-2
LSU 2 road Ls (A&M and UF), 1 home L (Bama), 1 neutral (USC) 6-4
Texas 1 home L (UGA) 9-1
Texas A&M 1 road loss (SoCar), 1 home loss (ND) 8-2

Imo you should be penalized more for home losses.

But also, I think they need to develop a concrete scoring method for deciding this stuff. You start with a certain number of points and you get deducted a certain number of points for losses based on margin of loss, location, and ranking of the team. You gain points for the same.

If Thornton isn’t in a splint and catches either one of the passes he dropped that’s a different game even with the refs hosing us. WR has to be the most pressing need right now. Gone are the days of running the ball every play and expecting to win (no matter how good you are at it). Also gone are the days when defense can be expected to completely shut down opponents. CFB is big offense now.

We definitely need to overhaul the WR group. Nico needs weapons.

UTC- FCS
NC State- 5-5
Kent State- 0-10
Oklahoma- 5-5 (2-5 last 7 games)
Florida- 5-5 (OT W)
Bama- 8-2
Kentucky- 4-6 (10 point win)
Miss State- 2-8

I dont see a single game here besides the Bama game that committee can look at as a quality win
I don't think the committee knows what it is doing. While I agree with your statement, the committee chair said last week the reason BYU and Indiana moved ahead of Tennessee is because they had quality wins over Utah (4-5) and Michigan (5-5). By that definition Tennessee has quality wins over Florida, Oklahoma, and NC State.

Isn’t tackling an engaged lineman a penalty?
no. You can’t hit an engaged blocker below the waist, but this is just a normal stunt. #5 is moving the tackle out while the DE comes inside. The idea is to leave the RB blocking 2. It looked weird here because the RT set so wide. #5 probably could have just come straight at the RB instead of running the stunt, but Kirby is a little maniacal about defenders doing their assignment.

Leopard and a spots thing. Here's to hoping Mr Banks gets that head coaching job. 🍻

I seriously doubt he'll get that job though unless he's willing to take a significant pay cut.

As of this morning, I think it’s 50/50, perhaps slightly better than 50/50, that UT will make the playoff if it finishes 10-2. Some assistance will need to happen, but UT doesn’t need a lot of help.

I think what’s most bumming about the loss is that it takes UT out of a chance to host in the first round or a chance at the SEC title. IF UT makes it in as a 10-11 seed, that’ll likely be a trip to one of the Big 10 schools.

And we are a much different team on the road. But with a glass half full approach, it’s a free shot as a road underdog and several weeks to prepare for it.

What's wild is Brazzell had no trouble torching defenses at Tulane, even against better opponents, but he's basically a warm body right now. The rest of the group were unproven at their prior stops but had immense potential.

Our passing game last night was a 160lb 5'9" guy getting open and a TE mismatching LBs. Then designed quick passes to the flat and curl routes off cushions.

I love Bru, but he's lost a step and not getting open downfield. That's why he hasn't scored, because he's not consistently getting open. I think Brazzell's inability to produce is probably coaching and lack of physicality. Thornton unfortunately has had injuries. Nimrod has a horrible drop rate.

We have insane talent in that room and they aren't producing or they aren't seeing the field. It's November, Staley and Matthews should be playing. If they're still behind what we are currently seeing then that's probably position group coaching. I hate throwing coaches under the bus but our WRs have been subpar since Hyatt and Tillman went to the league despite having more depth and talent.

Because of our route tree. Soft coverage and it’s gonna be a hitch, tight coverage and it’s gonna be a go route. Teams watch film, they know our scheme
