Recruiting Football Talk VIII

Glad they are keeping the names, obviously.

But the framing is funny to me. "preserved by Pilot". Like Russian paratroopers were gonna descend on Neyland and change the name or something.

Uh, guys... Simply not taking the money and leaving it alone was always an option. Lol. But whatever. Glad they aren't messing with the name.
Russian paratroopers could happen. Haven't you seen Red Dawn?

The staff has always been notorious for starting upperclassmen over talented freshmen. Last year with RG3, Nico and Seldon; and it’ll be the same this year with guys like Boo and Lewis
I don't think the staff has an issue starting younger players. I think the issue is for some staff members playing younger players in a true rotation OR when snaps are available during blowouts. None of the young players you mentioned should have/had started as freshman. Boo will be the exception this year and I think will play more snaps at STAR than any of player on the team.

We have to do a better job of giving younger players run when there is an opportunity to do so. Tank playing all those snaps last year when the game was decided in the early 3rd quarter was frustrating.

No but I always loved that Steve Miller song... Goes 'big ol Jed and Elijah, don't carry me to far away', you know the one in mean.😎
So, two big ol' boys named Jed and Elijah are carrying you far away. And you love it?

And I'm not.

Yeah, my gut feeling is that while there are effects due to the clock, the grip, etc., the underlying culprit is just the current expectation placed on pitchers.

With all the tech we now have in maximizing performance, combined with the way pitchers are used now, we're demanding maximum effort on every pitch— speed and/or spin. While we have the knowledge and the ability to track/monitor/analyze that lets us develop the most effective pitches, most people don't have the arm structure to deliver those pitches repeatedly for the long term.

Players and the union can squawk about the clock and the grip but I don't think changing those factors will make a big difference. I don't know, maybe if they flatten the seams a little to reduce the ability to even create those ungodly sweeps and such, pitchers will have to focus more on command and mix to find success.
I believe that the amount of force that pitchers are putting on the arm is not healthy… I also believe that the pitch clock has a negative effect bc they are having to pitch quicker.

The only position group that do a poor job with playing young talent is Safety.

Every other major school is going to go in this direction. Lube U already has with Kroger and I think others have as well. We did with Food City Center (aka TBA), but I think DW knows enough about UT sports that Neyland and SW Field re-naming would have sparked riots. They got the best of both worlds and made the fans happy.
Danny White is out in front with NIL and the money to fund a top power 5 school.

I agree but if we're going to keep riding with the guy who's got the nastiest stuff, it'll always be the guy that is overstressing his arm. Not sure how we get out of that loop.

It makes a big difference to have a player at Boyd’s level in those conversations because he’s not going to be intimidated by someone else’s money…he’s got his own and can walk away at any point he wants.
One of the best things I saw after we beat Bama in ’22 was someone asked Randy Boyd how much was it going to cost us for rushing the field??
He said “it doesn’t matter” B🍊🍊M👊🏻

Why would you ever inform an employee that they WILL be fired before you actually fire them? Makes zero sense.
It is Dick West, so it may or not be accurate reporting. That is what is great about Dick West. He does hit on some things, so you never know what he is accurate on and what he is pulling out of his butt.
