Except, the 5 seed is projected to be the loser of the Big 10 title game as it stands right now...
Big 10 title game: Oregon beats Ohio State
SEC title game: Texas beats Georgia
ACC title game: Miami beats SMU
Big 12 title game: Arizona State beats whoever
If anything Penn State and Notre Dame are both being rewarded for not playing in championship games right now.
If there's no consequences for losing the title game, why even play it? Using the same tie-breakers to decide who gets in you can just let the regular season decide them...Seeding wouldn't really change from what it is now but you wouldn't have played an extra game for 8 of the 12 teams and 2 of the 4 that didn't play are getting to host home playoff games
again, i think a lot of the time when we see these conf title games, especially in the SEC, it's usually been a play in game for the 4 team play off, or who used to go play for the BCS title.....so this year is a little weird, because aTm still controls it's own destiny with 3 losses. that's abnormal. if TX and UGA play in ATL, then what's on the line is the conf title and 1st round bye. now we could debate how big an advantage that is, but on its own merit, there is "something" on the line, besides just getting in. for the Big 10 and SEC, it just so happens that top 2 contenders are both already solidly in the playoff and the loser of that game isn't going to get punished...but they may have to go on the road (in some years, maybe not this year, for OSU and ORE, the lose of that game is getting a home game).
the loser of a TX/UGA game, i'm not 100% certain, they're getting a home game.
aTm has to play it's way in to the playoff. if they lose at all, they're out....and i think that's probably better for us in the end...then i don't necessarily care who wins in ATL to be honest.
and none of that matters, because the point of the conf championship game is not to strive for competitive balance or being fair....it's just to drive revenue. so they'll never go away, unless they start losing money.....
we're in a good/weird spot. we win, we're in, no extra game that could help/hurt us, but i have a feeling if we were going to ATL, a loss could bump us out. i don't think we would get the same benefit of the doubt as TX and UGA are going to get, assuming they're the ones in ATL. either way, i am glad we don't have find that out.
there's two potential scenarios left for us, with a win over Vandy...
1. there's some chaos that moves up a spot so we get a home game....pretty please with a cherry on top.
2. there's a lot more chaos that could move a team in as a bid stealer/automatic qualifier, that could drop us and maybe move us out...
.i think this is very unlikely....it would take a lot of things to happen....including the committee deciding we're the team to bump out over someone else....
i think if we win Saturday, what's most likely is we stay right where we're at, and we'll find out where we play in 2 weeks.
