Recruiting Football Talk VIII

2022 Vols...wouldn't have made the SEC championship game anyway. Georgia vs LSU both had better conference records so not even the same conversation playing hypotheticals.

2022 Vols sitting at 10-2 were at 7th with Bama (who we beat head to head) ahead of us...
That’s not it. We had an identical 6-2 conference record to LSU and Bama, and we had the head-to-head tie-breaker over both. The division format kept us out of the title game (just like it did several times in the 90s). LSU went because they won head-to-head over Bama.

The SEC ranking by the SEC own rules in 2022 (excluding the division championship format) was: 1 Georgia, 2 Tennessee, 3 LSU, and 4 Bama.

Ok... So then H2H doesn't matter?
Bama has H2H over them.
The playoffs aren't asking Bama to go play USCjr.

It's asking who is the better team, presumably against a large swath of potential future opponents.

There's no point in asking how well one team matches up vs another specific team...and on their home field, at that. And vs a team that wouldn't be in the playoffs, in such a case. I don't see how that could be an overriding factor, when it will never ever play out.

I’m sure some would, it depends on the circumstances. Texas would definitely rather beat Uga and get the bye then lose and be around 5-8. It will be harder on teams that lose the conference champ game than the teams that get a bye
Right. The teams that lose conference championships are the only teams that don’t get a bye. Everyone except the conference title game participants get their byes the weekend of the conference title games. The conference championship winners get their bye the following weekend. The losers play straight through.

True, but in 2022 there were divisions and LSU went instead of us. So that 10-2 Tennessee team wouldn't be the same argument as these 9-3 SEC teams for the playoff was the point.

Ryan Williams is a Bama kid and had a big season with a better QB he probably has an even better season. Why do people think he's going to enter the portal?

Playing in his home state for a SEC team that will still compete for the playoffs next year.

I read your post out of context.

Bama’s argument to be in this year is fraudulent. If it were us saying the same things in the same situation, it would be universally mocked.

The other (behind the scenes) “argument” that the playoffs need Bama is a huge lie. Let them sit out, as they deserve, and see who declines to watch. No one.

No, I was just pointing out how hypocritical it was to whine about Bama being ranked over us, then saying USCe should jump Bama.

I'm in the minority but I'm ready to see our young OL play. Similarly with our DBs this year. I'm ready for the youth movement on the OL.

Agreed.

At OT
Umarov, 4 star 6'7" 330lbs - FR
Johnson III, 3 star 6'7" 350lbs - SO
Brian Grant, 3 star 6'7" 340lbs - SO
Heard, 5 star 6'6" 340lbs - SO (he's getting better every week it seems)
Perry, 3 star 6'6" 310lbs - FR
Ginther, 3 star 6'5" 310lbs - FR
Duncan, 3 star 6'6" 300lbs - FR
Warren, 4 star 6'7" 342lbs - FR

IOL
Reddick, 3 star 6'5" 350lbs - SO
Lang, 3 star 6'4" 340lbs - FR
Bussell, 3 star 6'5" 300lbs - FR
Anderson, 4 star 6'5" 311lbs - FR
Satterwhite, 4 star 6'3" 300lbs - FR

Every one of them is rated as high or higher than Davis, Campbell, and Spraggins.

Mays is going to be hard to replace, but I think there's good size and talent just waiting for a chance.

If Texas beats AM and loses a close one to UGA, I could see the committee keeping them above us.
For sure. If it's closer than our game vs UGA, I think so.

Don't think the punishment for losing an SECCG will be 100% comparable to a reg season loss.

We could really use a blowout in Atlanta, either direction.

Except, the 5 seed is projected to be the loser of the Big 10 title game as it stands right now...

Big 10 title game: Oregon beats Ohio State
SEC title game: Texas beats Georgia
ACC title game: Miami beats SMU
Big 12 title game: Arizona State beats whoever

If anything Penn State and Notre Dame are both being rewarded for not playing in championship games right now.

If there's no consequences for losing the title game, why even play it? Using the same tie-breakers to decide who gets in you can just let the regular season decide them...Seeding wouldn't really change from what it is now but you wouldn't have played an extra game for 8 of the 12 teams and 2 of the 4 that didn't play are getting to host home playoff games
again, i think a lot of the time when we see these conf title games, especially in the SEC, it's usually been a play in game for the 4 team play off, or who used to go play for the BCS title.....so this year is a little weird, because aTm still controls it's own destiny with 3 losses. that's abnormal. if TX and UGA play in ATL, then what's on the line is the conf title and 1st round bye. now we could debate how big an advantage that is, but on its own merit, there is "something" on the line, besides just getting in. for the Big 10 and SEC, it just so happens that top 2 contenders are both already solidly in the playoff and the loser of that game isn't going to get punished...but they may have to go on the road (in some years, maybe not this year, for OSU and ORE, the lose of that game is getting a home game).

the loser of a TX/UGA game, i'm not 100% certain, they're getting a home game.

aTm has to play it's way in to the playoff. if they lose at all, they're out....and i think that's probably better for us in the end...then i don't necessarily care who wins in ATL to be honest.

and none of that matters, because the point of the conf championship game is not to strive for competitive balance or being fair....it's just to drive revenue. so they'll never go away, unless they start losing money.....

we're in a good/weird spot. we win, we're in, no extra game that could help/hurt us, but i have a feeling if we were going to ATL, a loss could bump us out. i don't think we would get the same benefit of the doubt as TX and UGA are going to get, assuming they're the ones in ATL. either way, i am glad we don't have find that out.

there's two potential scenarios left for us, with a win over Vandy...
1. there's some chaos that moves up a spot so we get a home game....pretty please with a cherry on top.
2. there's a lot more chaos that could move a team in as a bid stealer/automatic qualifier, that could drop us and maybe move us out....i think this is very unlikely....it would take a lot of things to happen....including the committee deciding we're the team to bump out over someone else....

i think if we win Saturday, what's most likely is we stay right where we're at, and we'll find out where we play in 2 weeks.
