Recruiting Football Talk VIII

Butch's offense ran through the QB. there too was a greater demand on the RB. Which is hugely ironic that RB's want to play in that system versus this, which rotates RB's, and uses pulling, and creates large chunk plays (supposedly). QB is asked to be cerebral, know the defense. WR's are just as important, as TE's. The C is QB of the line.

Which one of those is more in line with an NFL system?

Huepel knows his team well. Ins and outs, stelnghths and weaknesses. He still knows what he wants to do. With Hyatt he wanted movement, creating mismatches.

The only real criticisms I have with this years offense: Other than the crappy WR and PB woes are:

1: Lack of off tackle runs. Pin and pull is term Ive heard. We run it to perfection. We have a speedster. We can beat 80% of teams to edge.

2: We run tons of PA. Vandy bit on it. Georgia had athleticism to make up. Time and again we see Nico make plays off kilter. He is a killer off RPO. Thornton's best route is crossing route. Why, do cram go routes down throat?

Loved what we did versus Vandy. Design Nico a run. Much like Pavia, it gives him confidence. Slap in helmet so to speak. Wakes him up. Pull ball, make them account. Then boom! TD!

3: Red zone woes: 👆🏻 ditto. hard to criticize here bc of controlling clock. But when we are down 19-14 you gotta find that hot route.

It took us 12 games to find Sampson in passing game😤 check down, 5 yards. 3rd and 2. Run it, keep it, check down, bomb pass, slant, TE wheel, 4th and 1.

Much more attainable.

In 2022 with no running clock Tennessee ran 945 plays in a 13 game season little over 72 plays per game.

In 2024 playing 12 games so far Tennessee has ran 888 plays an average of 74 plays per game.
That’s very surprising to me as it sure didn’t feel that way. With us in particular our defense was far better this year which should lead to more possessions. Another factor I would think is 2022 had more explosive plays and this year’s team was more of a grind it out type of team which meant more plays on each possession. Just my impression as I haven’t backed it up with stats. I’m still surprised we have more plays/game this year but thanks for bringing the facts.

Listening to some of the stories about the holiday, politics, and relatives kinda made me feel like I really missed out on something, like missing a big game. I was seeing all the talk last week on tv about people not going to their relatives for the holidays because of who the voted for and thought, oh crap, all my close kin are like minded. I was very disappointed that there would be no such trifles at my gatherings.
I actually asked my wife do that face time thing with her aunt and uncle ( both commies and Florida people) so I could argue with some delusional mentally ill freaks over turkey. I had a great Thanksgiving I just feel like I missed out on something.

This just sounds like an echo chamber tbh

A lot of this offense is numbers based. Spacing requires a defense to declare where it is dedicating numbers and the QB is tasked with attacking the favorable matchup.

If you have safeties over the top of the wide WRs, CBs can play inside leverage and have safety help. Safeties can also run the alley on any off tackle runs—and you don’t have a blocker for them. The favorable matchup numbers for the run are all inside. For the pass, the favorable numbers are deep sideline shots or screens.

If teams can hold up against the run with a light box and limit big plays, Tennessee struggles. When Tennessee can force teams to add players to the box, the pass opens up. “Figuring out” the offense is code for “dictate run reads and then stop the run with a light box.”

I think Ohio State will fall behind us.

Indiana lost, dropped 5 spots
Bama lost, dropped 6 spots
Ole Miss lost, dropped 5 spots
BYU lost, dropped 5 spots
A&M lost, dropped 5 spots
Colorado lost, dropped 9 spots

Those were all teams that lost regular season games and had major drops...

Ohio State was 2nd...so assuming they drop 5 spots that'll move them to 7th...
Miami was 6th...assume they drop 5

1 Oregon
2 Texas
3 Penn State
4 Notre Dame
5 Georgia
6 Tennessee
7 Ohio State
8 SMU
9 Indiana
10 Boise State
11 Miami
12 Bama
13 Ole Miss
14 South Carolina
15 Arizona State

And then I think losing in conference title game will potentially drop folks...don't think it'll be 5 or more spots, but I could see dropping 1 or 2
Blowhio State will be above us, mark it down. I will be shocked if that is not the case. Ward Manipulation will not allow the committee to send OSU to Knoxville. In the committee's eye the games don't really matter that much, it is much more about team identity, perception, and overall season narrative.

High level running backs not lining up to play in this system is the most baffling thing in the Heupel tenure so far tbh. It's tailor made for any halfway decent RB to put up NUMBERS.

If you could draw up the ideal path to a national championship what would it be?

NOT the easiest. I mean would which would exact the most vengeance and garner jubilee. One that leaves you fat and happy, evil grin, picking flesh out of your teeth with a whittled bone as you bask in the wake of destruction behind you.

I’m wondering if your three games would be like mine

To clarify, you think Michigan’s AD will help OSU

Not even sure it's possible...but my revenge tour

1st round send Georgia home (we host them as the 7 seed, they're the 10)
2nd round beat down fake UT (2 vs 7)
3rd round we smoke Pedo State
4th round we win the Natty over Ohio State or Oregon

True, but two concerns:

1. Volume. UT runs its primary back a lot. I don’t think UGA has had a back with Sampson’s number of carries in 10 years. Not even NFL primary backs like Chubb, Michel, or Swift. A lot of RBs want to strike a balance between showing their skills and limiting their carries. Sampson is crushing it in raw terms, but his per carry numbers aren’t as impressive compared to other top level SEC backs like Hunter and Sanders this year.

2. Scheme. The unique spacing aspects of the offense aren’t something the NFL does much of. While RBs love putting up the stats, there has to be a concern that the concepts do not translate.

Tennessee has no trouble getting top level RBs. Sampson is top tier in the SEC this year and I think there are studs behind him.

Great points. "Figuring" out UT's Offense is really not the issue. It's not that hard to do from a scheme standpoint. His Offense isn't based on deception, it's based on conflict and exploiting that conflict on the fly and executing the options that present themselves. As Nico grows more you are seeing the Offense become what it should be.
Excellent points. Our offense is about not allowing the defense to disguise their blitzes by spreading the field. If the qb and receivers make the proper pre snap reads it is relatively simple. Unless the defense is allowed to put extra players on the field there is not a lot they can do if we execute.
