Recruiting Football Talk VIII

Well, some of this is because we have run the ball a ton this year.
And even more because we had a crisis at OTs. While that appears to have resolved, it not only hurt Nico in several games, but the several early games that comprised his introduction to SEC football. Trying to learn the ropes in two consecutive road games at night (thanks, Birmingham) would have been rough enough with pass protection. I think people forget the full speed blind side shots Nico took in the second quarter of the SEC opener. He had to adjust his game to a lack of protection, while Heup leaned harder on defense and the run. He looks like he's unlearning that crash course. I think he is peaking at the right time.

tonight does not matter

even if we are ranked ahead of ohio state, they are going to dismantle and re-rank based on media/conference preference following conference championships

we really won't know whether or not we are hosting until we see what happens in the conference championship games

they could put as the 6th, 7th, 8th spot tonight and still drop us to 9 next week if they need to. they are not beholden to any sort of rules or logic. they don't even follow their own precedence.
So, conference championship weekend:

(1) what best helps us move up? I think @jave36 and @MoCo_Vol said earlier lopsided losses by Georgia and Pedo St.

(2) what best keeps Bama in their rightful place, on the sofa watching the playoffs on TV?

It doesn't matter, but it helps make it seem less crazy to people that both the AP and the Coaches have us ranked above Ohio State this week.

After thinking on this some more, I have landed on this unfortunate fact: barring absolute blowouts, I do not foresee the results of the B10 or SEC Championship games having any real impact on the CFP rankings in the 12 team format. Wanna get coaches and AD’s to start screaming against playing conference championship games? Knock a team out of hosting a playoff game or out of the playoff entirely because they lost an extra game against a fellow playoff team.

Think of it this way: if we were playing Texas in the SEC championship game, lost, and Georgia got to host a playoff game because of our loss and we ended up having to go on the road in the opening round of the playoff, what would be doing? We’d be screaming from the rooftops about what bs that is because we would essentially have been punished for being the second best team in the league while Georgia will have been rewarded for being the third best team in the league.

The logical thing to do just from a competitive perspective is to get rid of conference championship games (just like basketball needs to get rid of conference tournaments). Too much money involved to do that, though.
Well the big difference between basketball and football is that you can actually improve your playoff position by winning a conf title in football.

It means absolutely nothing in basketball except for the 1 bid leagues to just get in.

But in merit I agree with your premise. If the games are competitive.. At most you'd swap spots.

The problem will be when one participant is ranked in the top 4 and one if ranked outside the top 6-8.. If the 6-8 team wins, a team that had a home game last week... Might not after championship weekend.

I don't see that as an issue this year because I expect all 4 participants in the big 10 and sec to be inside the top 5.

But what if it was Indiana playing Oregon and Indiana wins? Oregon would likely still get a home game, probably bumping someone else to a road game....

All that said, I hope PSU gets their doors blown off.😂
