Recruiting Football Talk VIII

As I think more and more about this game, I see it could go as a 14+ win either way. They may have this feeling of being backed in a corner by their fanbase and come out with their hair on fire and playing wide open with an aggressive game plan. Or, they could come out hesitant, not knowing what to expect from their fanbase and be conservative to get into the game. My gut says to watch out if one of the teams can start fast…I hope that team is the Vols.

I definitely think someone will win in a semi blowout fashion.

Don’t see this being a grind it out game.

If anyone wants peace of mind about Mike Matthews…. Listen to the Vol Club Confidential podcast. Very mature kid and I have zero concerns about him portaling out now. Speaks of how not playing much is just like being a freshman in high school. You have to prove yourself. Speaks highly of his bond with a number of players on this team.

The main difference is that the BCS had us above Ohio State, didn't it? May misremember.

But you're right. It's the way they treat the conference winners and the byes.
All the BCS simulations I saw had us below OSU. I didn’t verify there accuracy but assumed that was correct.

Reactions: Orange.
They played two good teams this season: Oregon and Penn State. Lost one and could have lost the other, but PSU couldn’t convert on two trips inside the 5. Then the obvious terrible loss against Michigan cannot be overstated. But don’t forget their game against Nebraska. A small margin of victory at home against that mediocre Nebraska team. What I’m trying to say is that they are not some juggernaut.
Well said. They are like every other team in the playoffs including us. They have some flaws but there’s more balance this year than in a long time. Been upsets everywhere. No reason to think the playoffs won’t be crazy as well. Maybe we get hot and go on a run. I like Docs philosophy of 14-2 until we’re not. This has been the most enjoyable season in years and anything more is just gravy.

Happy Monday - Weekends are never long enough are they.

DECEMBER 2024

December 9, 2024: Being overwhelmed is a condition of the soul that can only be remedied by taking one issue at a time and dealing with it to the best of your ability until there is nothing else that needs your attention. One day at a time; one step at a time until you have peace. Matthew 6:34 Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about its own things. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble.

Totally opposite, I believe individuals will watch SMU so they can say "I told you so" if SMU gets defeated by a large margin.

When you're saying No One will watch you're speaking for the whole Country. As Finebaum said it doesn't matter who plays individuals that love Sports are going to watch the games no matter which teams are competing..

I will watch, I don't care if it's Carson-Newman vs Grand Valley State..
You were correct about SMU. I disagree with Finebam. The tv ratings for the 23 championship game were garbage and were lower than the semis or any other championship game. Imagine the Super Bowl having lower ratings than a Wild Card game.

My daughter secured her tickets! Being the good Vol mom (and fan) that I am, I’m giving up 2 days of her coming home for the holidays and telling her to check off that bucket list item, go to Columbus, and help get our VOLS to round 2!!
I will pray for her. Columbus is a terrible place with terrible people. You'd think that it being the capital of Ohio it would be ok, but it is not. Even Cleveland is better and their water catches on fire.

I agree with not moving teams down for losing conference championship game.

Example: SEC
The first and second place teams in the SEC are Texas and Georgia. Whoever loses that game is second place in SEC. We are third place. Why would a third place finisher be ranked ahead of a second place finisher? I don’t understand why so many of you are saying if UGA loses we should move ahead of them. They are playing a bonus game. At worst they’ll be second place in SEC.

Additionally, the loser of the conference Championship game is already in a tough spot. These are physically demanding games. Now, if you lose, you have a shorter time to heal and prepare for the next opponent in round 1 of playoffs. So, it’s reasonable that the loser of the conference Championship game would at lease get to host in the first round and not be placed behind the third place team in the conference. So, I don’t see us moving ahead of Texas/UGA loser or Oregon/Penn State loser, and I don’t see Penn State being lower than OSU. Penn state will at worst be 2nd place in the Big 10, why would they be ranked lower than 3rd place OSU? It doesn’t make sense.

Throw in ND, plus two more conf champs, and that leaves us and OSU for 8th and 9th spot. Both have a good argument for 8th. Perhaps we’ll move up if UGA and Oregon wins in a blowout. That’s the only way our resume will improve over OSU’s, and the only way I see the committee putting us at 8, ahead of OSU.

Now, I’ve said from the beginning this should be a 16 team playoffs, no bye, top 8 host first round, use straight rankings, no conf championship games, maybe throw in a 13th game for all teams. In this scenario we would be top 8 rank and be hosting. Also, I’d do 16 team playoffs throughout the top 64 team. So, teams ranked 17-32 would play in a similar playoffs, etc. they’d play for money also. Winner of each playoff bracket, the team splits a large purse.
I agree with this with one exception. ND should not get to host a playoff game at all regardless of how they are ranked. Not playing in a conference should allow them to be in the playoffs, but no higher than 9. It’s ridiculous that they get such preferential treatment from all of college football.

My conundrum is that they have a better chance of beating uga than Indiana does.

Okay, here’s my compromise: Indiana beats the ever living crap out of ND. Then wins by a field goal in overtime against uga. Are y’all okay with this? I know it justifies Indiana being in with a weak schedule, but it would totally make it obvious that ND never should have been there. Indiana beating uga is just for fun. 😈

I hope he becomes a key piece in a long playoff run!
