Recruiting Football Talk VIII

I don’t know the perfect answer to the first round byes, but there should be some concession made for teams that won their conference championship game verses the teams that got an extra week’s rest. JMO
I'm not trying to be a smart-alec, but why does there have to be a concession for a team that wins that game? They got the $ and the positive press and the conference championship. They're still getting 2 weeks rest and if they are the better team overall, they're still going to get a higher seed.

None of the evidence from this season suggests Boise, Clemson & AzSt are top 4 teams. I don't care how many conference championship games they win, that game doesn't offset an entire season of evidence to the contrary. In fairness; Notre Dame, Texas, Indiana & Penn State haven't really beaten anyone either. But just winning a conference championship game should be the reward for winning the conference championship game. Seeding should be based on the whole body of work.

Is not nonsense bravado imo, its tactical bravado. What you are saying is true, but he knew our fans and potentially some of players would (justifiably) complain about the seeding and he wanted to head that off and say "Look, we don't care. We are going to play wherever". Players love that kind of talk and so do our fans, since I've seen that quote all over the place after the selection.
Yeah..I love that Heupel said it...even if I know the truth of it, I hope he can make his team believe it.

We are gonna need some kind of juice to get through this first. If we somehow get by OSU at home...then Oregon and whoever we play after that will have a hornets nest to deal with...our guys will be juiced to the extreme.

UT - 7
Auburn - 0

In the final game of the regular season, the Plainsman of Auburn came to Knoxville. The Vols were hoping to win their 23rd consecutive game and continue their 14 game scoreless streak.
A scoreless game turned when a Johnny Butler punt return put UT on their own 35. Three running plays by Butler, Wallen, and Andridge got the ball to the Auburn 40. On the next play, Johnny Butler dropped back to pass, scrambled to his left and took off running. Butler broke several tackles and scored standing up. Ike Peel’s conversion made it 7-0. The Vols Defense held Auburn on downs and the Vols ran out the clock to finish the ‘39 season undefeated and unscored upon.

Good idea would be:
- get rid of the conference championship games
- still have the same criteria for including the top 5 ranked conference champions
- go to 16 teams
- work out a profit share agreement with the CFP were the conferences come out neutral from losing the conference championship games with the additional revenue from the extra games in the 16 team format
- team placement will be based off seed just like the ncaa basketball tournament, no special treatment for conference champions of than just inclusion in the playoff

Valid points. I think ultimately they will have to eliminate the conference championship and determine conference champion based on regular season. Then expand to 16 teams with top 8 getting to host first round byes. The additional games in the first round makes up for the money lost from conference championship game. Might also make the regular season be 9 or 10 conference games to better determine a more deserving champion. I’m just spitballing ideas.

The main difference is that the BCS had us above Ohio State, didn't it? May misremember.

But you're right. It's the way they treat the conference winners and the byes.
The BCS was always biased similarly in the ranking, the problem with this year is the format. It makes it even more biased toward crappy paper tiger teams in garbage with a good record.

Because the bracket they gave us is the worst by far. We got completely screwed by not getting to host this game....otherwise I would feel the same way.

You know and I know...hell man every Vol fan knows..we don't play well on the road against good teams...and OSU is a really good team with a massive chip on their shoulder.

I hope we win...it will be a monumental achievement.
I believe we can win. I believe we will win. I think we smack them in the face and take it to them.

So, first we take down Ohio State. Then we take down Oregon. With the Big 10 out of the way, we beat Texas before finally getting a rematch with Georgia for all the marbles. Seems doable.
First we whip Blowhio in their house, then we kick Organ in the organ, next we give it to TU horns up ( I really hope they make it), last we give the dogs a bowl cut. The ugly trophy will be presented by Little Nicky and Stanky.
