Recruiting Football Talk VIII

What have we been told?

Most of what I've seen is some variation of: "Tennessee's collective doesn't have the most money but its one of the smartest and most effective with the money it does have."
Been told it’s the best and we will do whatever it takes
Still pisses me off that as a donor we still never see how the funds are allocated

> Been told it’s the best and we will do whatever it takes

I've seen that being talked about by posters and fans but not by anyone really with actual clout that I recall. Although, it's certainly possible I just missed it. We were a little lower than I expected on that list but I was nearly certain we were in the lower half of the top 10.

> Still pisses me off that as a donor we still never see how the funds are allocated

This is fair.

Happy Wednesday

December 11, 2024: Regardless of your own personal difficulties and condition, you can always help someone less fortunate than yourself. Evaluate the kindness that you can extend or the time you can spend in prayer on their behalf. The more time you spend on others will mean the less time you can spend on yourself, especially in selfish ambition or self-pity. Philippians 2:3-4 Let nothing be done through selfish ambition or conceit, but in lowliness of mind let each esteem others better than himself. Let each of you look out not only for his own interests, but also for the interests of others.

You also don’t need 24 teams. That’s just excessive and useless. Does anyone seriously want to watch Syracuse and Indiana go at it?

It’s a simple fix: 16 teams, no byes, highest ranking 5 conference champs get automatic bid, seeding is based on rankings, and your top 8 get to host. If the 5th highest ranking conference champ is 17th, then they’re in as the 16th seed and whoever was 16th is bumped out. Sorry bro, this isn’t your neighborhood little league where everyone gets a participation trophy, shoulda won that one extra game.
I think it can be even more simple. Keep the current 12 team field, and do away with automatic byes for conference champions. Just rank 1-12, top 4 get byes…if they are all from one conference then so be it. 5 top ranked conference champions are auto-qualified.

If you look at it this year, the 1-12 rankings were pretty good but the seeding rules screwed everything up and why PSU got the easy path they did for losing their conference championship game.

In this scenario you almost don’t need the committee and can just go with the AP or some other ranking.

Injuries always suck and you wish they didn’t happen. The bye week we get for winning is nice, but Texas is a really tough matchup that we had to face for the bye. Given the choice to play Texas or Indiana, we’d take Indiana every time (all things being equal). But…

… you hang banners for winning the SEC and that was an awesome accomplishment. Injuries are part of the game, and Beck could have been hurt at Tech or UMASS. Wasn’t Travis hurt in a nothing game last year? Depth matters and will matter a lot as the playoffs progress. Of any team, UGA can’t complain about depth. Exhibit A: Our backup punter was the highest rated punter recruit in his class.

At QB, Stockton is a baller. His passing ceiling is at least a little lower than Beck’s and he had a couple huge mistakes in the SECCG, but I like the way he runs and how he sees the field. Maybe our odds of winning are lower now, but maybe not. Either way, all you can do is prepare, get healthy, and go play.
Georgia has no worries with or without Beck. They will destroy that side of the bracket, they are the only good team on that side. They will lose to the Vols in the finals.

December 11, 2001............

After two amazing seasons, Travis Stephens and John Henderson were named AP First Team All-Americans.

Henderson, the Outland Trophy winner from 2000, recorded 4.5 sacks and 8.5 tackles for loss despite missing two games. He was one of three repeat honorees and a finalist for the Outland Trophy again.

Stephens ran for 1464 yrds (UT record), 10 TDs, averaged 122 yrds a game, and ran for 226 yrds vs Flor*da. He was the first Vols running back named to the AP first team since Johnny Majors in 1956.

Fred Weary and Will Overstreet were named second and third team respectively.

Only problem I have with this is the byes. I don’t like the byes and I don’t think you should have them. You could follow this format by say top 6 get home field advantage opening round and then go to the big bowls, etc.

Yeah I’m just not a fan of expanding to 16, I think 12 is enough. If we did away with automatic byes for conference champions this year it would have been more compelling. In no world should ASU and BSU get byes for winning those conferences. Just rank 1-12 and give the top 4 byes regardless of conference and this playoff would have been better. The seeding rules as it stands this year are awful.

I think the term you're looking for is 'euro step'.
It's a travel, I don't care what name you give it. The basketball world has twisted itself in knots since Jordan trying to make traveling legal. Gather step, give me a break, it's a freaking step. It is as bad as the CFP committee trying to explain why Indiana and Boise are top five teams. The NBA change the rule and I have had legions of people try to explain to me that they haven't, they changed the stinking rule to legalize traveling.
It is not hard to count to three.

I'm not Josh Heupel....I can be objective. If you think just because Meatchicken ran them at home means that we are going to run them at home, then you are not that bright.

That is one of the most ferocious rivalries in all of sports and OSU clearly lost simply because UM is in their head....I hate to break this to you, but we are not in their head, there will be no psychological edge for us.

They are pissed off and embarrassed, and they are going to play like their hair is on fire...and they have one of the two most deeply stacked rosters in CFB.

Winning this game is going to be a monumental achievement...if we play our best, then we can win, but we don't play our best against good teams on the road.

Also...anybody that says "OSU sucks" is an idiot, I don't know any people that think "OSU sucks". Just because our people think we have a better resume and deserve to host the game...does not Jean we think OSU sucks.

This is simply the truth of our current place in the rebuild...if we were playing at Neyland, this is a likely win, but with it being in Columbus it is a likely loss...we simply have not shown the ability to play great against good teams on the road.

I would love to see that narrative change...but I don't expect it will right now.

I hope you're right and I'm wrong...I will gladly eat crow....I actually love to eat Crow.
Our road games have been losses against SEC teams.
If we had OOC road games against any Big 10, Big 12, or ACC teams we’d win any and all of them. No doubt in my mind.
We’re going into osu’s stadium and we are going to kick their arses. It will be a statement game for our players. Tennessee has the bigger chip on their shoulder. We’re disrespected by our conference and the playoff committee.

I feel strongly about the fact that this team is peaking at the right time. If we had snuck into the SECCG, we could’ve beaten either texas or uga. Just my humble opinion. I watched at least part if not all of the conference championship games and there’s not one team that is in the playoffs that Tennessee can’t beat.

We are a very very bad matchup for osu. Their OL is hanging on due to injuries. Their qb needs to be able to run. Our defense is a horrible matchup for them. Their qb will literally be running for his life. Neutral officiating crew means that we should get a better shot at a fairly officiated game. If the officials just call 1/2 of the obvious holding penalties then they won’t score a single TD.

osu struggles with run defense. That’s got to have our OL and RBs salivating. If they can’t slow down our running game then it’s going to open up the passing game and it’s all over for osu.

I am guessing that the playoff committee will justify our going into the horseshoe as a good matchup and appropriate up until the absolute annihilation of osu commences.

If we played that michigan team anywhere, it would be closer to the Mississippi State game.
I think the osu game will resemble the vandy game due to the rushing qb. With the same outcome.

I realized that you and I are the opposite side of the same VFL coin. 😎

I get it and the mealy mouth double talk was nauseating but if you look up what the BCS projections were it’s basically identical. We are all biased and it’s just going to come down to opinions. I think the correct 12 teams got in at the end of the day. The biggest issue is giving a 9 and 12 seed first round byes. Actually Oregon got screwed worse than us. At the end of the day you are going to have to beat several good teams to win it. I think there could be some surprising results. Let’s ride.
Anyone in Tennessee’s path is screwed. 4 single game seasons left. It’s Football Time In Tennessee. Tennessee is defined as anywhere a VFL stands. Tennessee is everywhere! Time for us to take what is ours!

14-2 🤠
