Recruiting Football Talk VIII

I think we need to see what we do in the transfer portal to replace all the talent we are losing (Oline in particular)... I've said a few times, no excuse for us not to have our pick and get what we want with all the talent there now and who will probably continue to flow into the portal. I know we have a big game coming up, but I would surely hope our staff is making calls and moves behind the scenes.
Do you really believe that we don't have juice in the pipeline and that our success depends on the portal? We got dudes. Players in the portal will be seeking us out.

This is why I say Banks need to bring the heat vs OSU.

Jeremiah Smith 16.4 ypc
Emeka Egbuka 12.4ypc
Carnell Tate 14.2 ypc
Brandon Innis 12.6 ypc

If Howard has time with that core Howard could pick us apart.
Agreed. He’ll try it with 4 initially but if that doesn’t work, needs to bring 5 or 6 regularly.

I’ll be honest, I really hate UNC personally so I am to an extent biased against them regardless of the hire. Grew up around a lot of prickish UNC fans. So naturally I pay attention to them as I’m sure many of us here do. That said, I think they take a significant step back next year. Their schedule looks weak, and it is, but unless they go crazy in the portal they are a depleted team talent wise, and still bleeding. They lost to James Madison, Duke, Pitt, GT, BC, NC State which pre season most thought maaaaybe they would have lost 3/6 at most. Not sure Mr 83-104 without Brady is a good enough ball coach to win 8. They go @UCF, @Cal, @NC st, and then host Clemson, & then Duke. That will be a tough stretch for them. @Cuse & @Wake are no guarantees for that roster. Not buying them next year even with a good coach.

He’s old af and this game is not the same game he was coaching in New England. I think he’s one of the most overrated coaches of all time blessed with the second greatest quarterback to ever play in the NFL. It is what it is. Saban proved that once he installed his system and got his horses he could trample anyone with anyone and he was correct. The moment Brady left Bill he withered. System malfunction or key cog lost?

Oh, and the NIL bump? until it happens, I’m not buying that for a second. That’s a huge capital investment for a basketball school and their big money regents and financiers have never felt comfortable taking resources away from their cash cow.

I think it’s a clever ploy to bring your son in on the spoils too, demanding contract language for succession. Doesn’t feel market driven, as an investment strategy it’s risky. What if both coaches suck? Locked into back to back bad cycles? After hiring Mack Brown? A, let’s be honest, similar feeling hire? Hey look, I think if you can still work and you want to work, or need to work, obviously, you should be able to, no matter your age, given you do the job well… but at a certain point UNC has become a retirement home for washed up coaches.

Ultimately UNC is going to be left holding the bag on this one imo.

My feelings about Deion are similar only as it pertains to having no system. I am very curious to see him next year with no Hunter and no Shadeur. The big difference here is Colorado has shown they will spend for football. No basketball tying them down. Not $20m but significant enough to put together a working roster. Again, two generational players will be gone next year. Next season of College Football 2025 sure will have some interesting plot lines…

I agree with all of this brother. Married into a Tarheel family and have lived in charlotte for 30 years due to that. I hate them too. Fortunately we beat them nearly every time we ever play them...even in beloved basketball...like when we beat them in Chapel Hill last time by 19 points in a blowout.

Not sure what you are meaning by "juice in the pipeline", but I do think it is going to be difficult to replace Cooper, Spraggins, and Campbell... We are losing several WR's to graduation and we just lost two more to the portal... Not sure where I said "our success depends on the portal"... love how folks just make crap up... I also said no excuse for us to not be able to get what we want in the portal... you must have missed class that day where they went over reading comprehension...

Man that search was TERRIBLE, but those were also some of the most fun days of my life (and the worst of my time in college lol...)

How far we've come. Back then my refresh button was worn out hoping every new coach, every new OC, every new recruit was the spark we needed to get back.

Now, Heup's in charge. He's got us rolling. We'll lose some, we'll get some, and we'll be good.

OL is really my only concern next season. As frustrating as the guys were this year...we'll be replacing 3 starters as well as 2 of the 2nd string guys. That's no easy task.

WR room I'll be honest, I could see this next year going like this year did in the secondary. You just have to let the young guys play and we end up better because of it.

Thornton & Bru are both big body WRs. Dont'e has a bit of top end speed but we ended up relying on just deep balls to get him touches.

Brazzell and Squirrel both will be back and then we have Matthews, Staley, Leacock (who I think has just been buried behind the two graduating big body guys) and the incoming WRs too.

We'll have a lot of hungry and young talent at WR as well as TE next year, if they actually work and compete could be a good year for the passing game.

Bama was neutral court, and Northwestern was road game and went to OT.

The worry I have is they only play 2 guys 15+ mpg that are SMALLER than 6'6" so a lot of size and 15th in KenPom. It'll be a Quad 1 win if we take care of business.
Yeah, and I noticed Okpara didn't have a huge game against Miami and struggled at times in that matchup. Will be a huge opportunity for him

Nashville, Atlanta, and Charlotte are the three core areas for Tennessee recruiting. Always have been and always will be. When Tennessee is not good, we fall off in those areas. When Tennessee is good, we kill it in those areas and cherry pick elsewhere. It’s not about opening up new areas. It’s about maintaining those vital core areas.

So where does Tennessee always play neutral site games? Nashville, Atlanta, and Charlotte. That’s not a coincidence.

And honestly, they’re fun. We had a blast in Charlotte this year. We will have a blast in Atlanta next year. It’s better than another home game against an FCS school.
Those metros are true, but generally it is the whole states. Pinnacle recruiting for us we look very strong in NC. Both mountains and piedmont. IMO. That is usually where we fall off hardest at least. Would be interested in a correlation.

This sounds like you are saying we have to replace everyone via the portal. I say we have a pretty talented remaining roster. We are beyond the days of dependency on the portal. The portal should be a way for overlooked players to get a shot at the bigtime, not an all you can eat buffet for schools to build a roster.

I hope that whatever he does, that it is something new that can't just be sat on like in the UGA game.

We need to start working on and adjusting gameplans for our bigger games weeks or months before we even play those games.

Do something creative defensively that OSU has not seen us do before. It seems like a lot of teams do that to us.
