There isn't a consensus like you're making it sound. I've seen plenty of opinions where he's not even top 10, other have him just inside the top ten, others have him as #1.It's not my statement, it's the ranking from a service the NFL even uses for draft and eval purposes.
Exactly, there are no stats. The folks that sit down, are knowledgable of the game and position, and watch every single game, do the ratings.
According to experts he's the best P5 guy at the position. The NFL draft boards seem to agree (or at least not disagree). He's going to have to pick a position in the NFL (from what I've seen at least).
I like your scenario better than mine and really hope you are right. I’m going to enjoy the now and let tomorrow worry about the future. Ultimately some common sense gaurd rails have to be put in place because the current structure is basically no structure. I do like the current Tennessee way and it’s clearly working across all our sports. I just don’t have much confidence in the NCAA and Sankey and the BIG commissioner.I see it differently. The mercenary players with no heart will flock to the high dollar teams with no soul. It will work for a while (uga, texas, osu), but not always (ole miss, bama).
Sustainable development will always work for others (Oregon, Tennessee). The route to success is more likely our way than theirs.
The coaches who push for the highest paid teams will ultimately lose not only their team, but the fanbase, their donors and ultimately their job. For example, watch the plight of day and kiffin. Day’s seat is hot and will go nuclear if he loses to Tennessee. He will coach to not lose and essentially coach scared for his job. The osu fans will storm the field when they lose to Tennessee, but not in joyous celebration rather to catch Day for some tar and feathers.
Just watch.
We will triumph in the end! DW is doing it right. Our coaches are not chasing the mercenaries in any sport and it saves our fans heartache and frustration over wasted money. Just watch.

I started following the Vols when Bobby Majors was returning punts. He was very good at it as wellhe was... fast.
Fastest human I recall seeing in Neyland was Raghib Ismael. I can still remember vividly the feeling of watching that dude run a kickoff back.
There have been some special Vols though. Cordarelle had underrated speed. I think EB had underrated speed.
But, any list not containing the following name should be shredded.
One of my fave Vols, Dale Carter.
Watching this 'kings of the north' podcast... These guys just don't know... Lol. They've boiled it down to...'they aren't good at passing, so stop Sampson, and double James Pearce, game over'
