Recruiting Football Talk VIII

Most of OSU key contributors on offense and defense were recruits not portal players.

All WR's were recruited by Hartline, the DL with Sawyer and company were recruits.

The only ones I believe that started in key positions were Downs, Judkins and Howard.

The fact that our players came out without shirts on makes me think they let outside talk get to their heads too.
It doesnt bother me. If anything its just trying to have fun with it. Hell, they earned it. If players want to practice shirtless, wgas.

We hadnt played in a meaningful bowl game, or for a championship spot in years. Lemme back up, Ive been married, had a nearly 15 year career in sales, three kids, and three Presidents have come and gone. 2007. I know, sat in the Georgia Dome and watched an LSU team luck into a title.

Huepel is a smart guy. He wants to win, and wants to win the right way. I like that. As even his own players attest, in some occasions culture can be forsaken to talent.

The problem is congruency. That result isn’t commensurate with the resources of this program. Tennessee has too much $$ and is too special to get a result like that.

OSU is a special place as well but it isn’t 42-17 more special. We need to expect better. OSU is maximizing their resources. Well we have resources too. Do we really want to win?

You don’t go get a Jakolbe Thomas or a Chris Brazzell if you really want to win…you’re just hoping. Hoping is for Vanderbilt.

Also, Nico isn’t the guy. He just isn’t. We want him to be (sunk cost fallacy) but he doesn’t have it. George Mac probably doesn’t have it either. He has disappointment written all over him.

Danny White needs to solve this. The good news- We have the resources to do it. The reason I know that is because Tony Vitello exists. And he wears orange.
Haha…Ryan Day lost to Michigan for the 4th time and we sent 30k fans to Columbus. OSU is maximizing their resources? Sure, they spent NIL money, but it’s not like everything is peachy up there. If we had spent money and lost to Florida or Georgia again, this board would be going nuts too.

I love how you project about GMac too. Nico has the talent- he just needs to progress.

Yep, I was thinking about this last night. All of their offensive skilled players except Howard and Judkins were recruits. The portal is to supplement. You still have to recruit and develop. Just plug and play transfers.

I do believe we need more we need one elite WR and clearly OL out of portal. We also have a creativity issue on O.

What we saw last night from OSU, moved their playmakers around, created confusion, created mismatches, wore us down mentally as much as physically.

We have almost no creativity on O. It’s vanilla and everyone has figured it out.

We recruit similar to Penn St and while Franklin has struggled against Mich and OSU, the games have been more competitive.

Get rid of Hazle and hire Chip Kelly as OC/QB coach.

That would be the move of the century for Heupel.

Having Kelly work with Nico would be heaven. Chip would use him exactly like Mariota. Only issue would be Chip and Hype maybe having differences over coaching the QBs, but that’s the move I’d make at QB/OC.
Agree. Heupel’s offence needs an update. Need outside ideas to do that right

I like Banks. That defense has come a long way. He does need a safety or two.!
Tennessee's defense finished the season allowing 16.1 points per game, its best scoring defense since allowing 14.5 points per game during the 1998 national championship season.

But yes, we should fire Tim Banks. 🤣

It was a gut punch but the playoffs were house money. Not going to believe we don’t have the talent to take the next step, so save your finger calluses. Coaching failed but we have excellent coaches…once again…calluses. Good old fashioned stomping. We have to do something different to beat these type programs. I’ll leave them to it. Not expecting any blowhards on here to have real answers, so I’m not reading them.

Even if they supplement, they spent money to get actual players.

Imagine if we we had Downs? We are playing a walk on and an OSU reject at safety.

One of their DB. The one who's name stars with an I. Is a transfer from Ole Miss

Id bet if we asked Tim how he feels about his play calling..id wager he would say his personnel didn't dictate 1:1 to allow for blitzing. our linebackers are young.

We’ve brought in some transfers that have greatly contributed. Let’s see where OSU goes. In a 4 team playoff, we were both playing in a NY6 bowl. If they want to spend $20 million, then Day better do something with it. Beating us at home won’t cut it.

Last night solidified issues we've noticed that need to be addressed. OSU exposed the weakest areas of the team.

1. Our wide receivers are not coached well enough. Period. They're talented, but they aren't improving. If anything, guys like Bru have regressed (could be injury). Brazzell doesn't look better than he did at Tulane. Nobody could get open last night and would just stop their routes instead of finding the soft space in the defense (what OSU WRs did).

2. Our OL was good but not great. Some of that is talent. I think we've got some guys playing to the absolute best of their ability which is a brught spot for Elarbee, but we still lack talented depth. Recruiting the OL has been slow. We know that.

3. Safeties are good but not great. Nonody elite on the back end of the defense. They're better than we've had for a long time, but not elite. The corners got beat on perfect throws last night, so I can't really fault them there when they had good coverage.

4. The linebackers are young and a step slow right now. OSU exploited that. Good news is that recruiting has been pretty darn good at LB and these guys are very talented. They're going to improve.

Lastly, there's any obvious difference and talent discrepancy between the OSU's, Oregon's, Georgia's, and Texas's and the tier just below that - us, Ole Miss, South Carolina, etc. (I struggle to place Penn State, Michigan, and Bama right now).

We are good enough to beat most teams and catch a more talented rival during an SEC home game.

But when we get to the post season and teams have weeks to rest, evaluate, develop a gameplan, expose weaknesses, etc, the talent disparity shines through.

This is why we have struggled to beat Georgia, especially on the road. It's why we faded against Bama last year. It's why we got dominated last night. OSU's roster is simply at a different level and with the extra time to prepare and rest there was little chance to overcome that. Even if we had hosted or neutral site I'm afraid. I didn't expect it to be that far of a gap, tbh.
