Recruiting Football Talk VIII

the only takeaway is we need better talent. We have gone farther than I ever dreamed with what we have but until we are stacking top 5 classes this will happen against those who do. Being able to knock off a few of those teams when they aren’t playing to their potential won’t beat those who are

I’ve got nothing against you, just don’t think the transfer thing is sustainable long term. That pissed you off and made you do the name calling crap.
Its sustainable if you hit it at a high level. Cant be afraid to make business decisions.

Ive been whining about the talent gap for years, lol. Yet here we are. Huep is our guy.

Can he take the next step?

Heupel goes into a shell in big games and believes his system will eventually click because the continued failures are the result of an “execution” flaw. He came out of the chutes with slower developing plays instead of quick, high percentage, confidence-boosting sets. OSU ran motion and guard/tackle pulls with the play going away from them in perpetuity. They put Banks on skates from the outset. I don’t believe it would’ve mattered in the long run, but the facemask penalty ultimately set the tone for the last 58+ minutes of the game.

Heupel’s brand of football, at this point, seems to not only be content with but accepting of philosophy over adaptation and discipline. What I mean by that is, Heupel’s approach to every game looks very similar. The defense has a high motor and is prone to committing penalties because it performs outside itself in the pursuit of “making a play.” How many times did we make a stop but give the opposing offense a 1st down with senseless penalties this season? The offense is unimaginative and stale. Injuries didn’t help our efforts, but, again, his apparent belief in philosophy over adaptation is an intrinsic flaw that must be overcame if he wants to take the next step. Don’t misunderstand what I‘m saying here. Great teams “know” who and what they are. Elite teams (coaches) find ways to put themselves in successful situations. We didn’t do that last night or in many other big road games since Heupel’s arrival (sans LSU). Heupel and the staff don’t know how to respond when a formidable opponent punches them (and their philosophy) in the mouth. Running Nico around and making him the sacrificial lamb isn’t a response, and the 2nd half proved that.

Yesterday, today and always, it’s still GBO!

It still baffles me that the offense has regressed so much. I can't make myself believe Golesh was the brains behind it.
HOT TAKE: Bubba Mc****ingump knew how to recruit uber talented guys, and didnt always fit his culture, which was non existent.

He was just a terrible terrible coach.

Those guys Huep took to next level, were Mc****inggump's.

It has to go fast to have a chance against superior talent. You can slow down if talent is even, but to beat more talented defenses it has to go fast. For some reason, we have not been able to go as fast for the past two years since HH left.

I really don't get, with our present and future QB's, why we don't have elite WR prospects lining up? Heck, I think TX got several elite WRs committed within a month of Manning committing. I'm concerned if we don't get some reliable targets to throw to, some of our QBs (present and future) may change their mind. We need another Hyatt!!!! 🤫
Texas was willing to drop the 💰 for them.

100000%. Elite program. Elite talent Tennessee needs to try it

Yeah, seems like we got a staff full of GA’s on the offensive side of the ball. Got to quit just promoting from within there in the hopes these guys develop, and go out and get some upgrades. If we aren’t going to target TE’s any more than we have this year, that spot needs to be an elite, established recruiter. OL, WR, and OC need to be the absolute best guys money can buy.

didn't read through anything last night or today... don't care to...

As I said a week or so ago, we need to decide whether we are serious about taking that next step to actually compete for championships instead of talking about it, saying "we're good" at a certain position, getting one body here and there, and trying to do more with less, not willing to adjust our gameplan for certain teams or making adjustments during a game...

We have some good talent, but right now it is not being properly developed to where it could be, or being used to the fullest. All you have to do is look at the close games we got through with just enough talent and some things going our way, but last night was the definition of more talent vs less talent. Teams have figured out our passing game and certainly have figured out our defensive weaknesses. They do that and we're cooked...The supposed talent at WR this season has been MIA at times and I am not sure they got off the bus last night IMO. Something has to be done at that position group, along with obviously our Oline.

Guess now we have more time to concentrate on the portal and we will see what happens in the next 2-3 weeks in terms of portal pickups and potential staff changes/upgrades, which is definitely needed.

Really good season for us, but certainly didn't want it to end with being absolutely embarrassed and whipped on national TV. I think Indiana played them closer.

Yeah, we're not swimming in the same pond with the big guys. Don't see that changing. I don't think Spyre is everything we've been told it is. I don't see anything changing either. I think our ceiling is going to always be a fringe playoff team. Wealthy programs will always rise to the top. Alabama is in a similar place as we are. I think you'll see, OSU, OR, TEXAS, ND at the top. They've got limitless money.

Feels like spyre got the jump on the NIL era and that gave us a leg up. After that we got lapped

Call me crazy, I think OSU was fine losing to Michigan & getting that extra week to prep for round 1.

They knew they were gonna host regardless & Chip Kelly revamped play calling. They will have something for Oregon I think.
Honestly think they beat Oregon this go round if Chip Kelly schemes up things like he did against us, especially with it being a “neutral site” game. Dan Lanning is a better defensive mind than Banks though so will be an interesting matchup.

I don't have time to listen, summary please, sir.
Time for some soul searching. Program is in such good shape overall. Last night stings and just shows us where we are in terms of the celeing, and how much is left to do to break through it.

No specifics, but change will come. Roster does need some work. Coaches really have to re revaluate things.

Wouldn't go so far as to say any coaches need to be fired. But really wondered why the offense looks soooooo much different than 2 years ago.

Acknowledged the o line was bad. Noted deficiencies at safety. Really complimentary of OSU wrs,d line....

Basically... We know where the ceiling is now.. What are we gonna do/be able to do to break thru. Also said that there will be guys that played last night that will go in to the portal,a coupler may already know where they're going but wanted to play this out with this team.

Why we don’t have mesh, flood and stick route concepts at least consistently especially when defenses are giving it to us with this drop 7-8 scheme is beyond me at this point. Stick and mesh would have ate it up especially if we could start loading one side up with 3 receivers. Baylor ran mesh a lot and it worked for them why Josh removed it from this offense idk.

I agree. 👍 To your points -

Heup needs to look in the mirror and be honest with himself and the situation. Despite being successful, I really think this season exposed the flaws. If he makes the necessary changes, we have the right guy. If he doesn't we will be 8-10 wins per season and ranked #10-20 on average until/if UT says that is not good enough.

How does any good HC forget what works in a system he designed and utilized for years? Don't have the answer. How does any HC at that level not review the film and determine the strengths and weaknesses of his team such that he game plans accordingly? Don't know. How can the D coaches and Heup look at the OSU game film and not see that we have match-up issues in the secondary, inexperienced LB's who cannot cover TE's and are totally incompetent at playing zone all season for the past four years? Don't know. That last point says - BLITZ - idgit. I am so over "the opponent dictated what we tried to do" type BS that comes out of coaches mouths as excuses. Focus on what you do well and do it, then throw in a few wrinkles the opponents have not seen on film - like OSU did last night and UGA did during the season. If you lose you at least gave your best efforts. Last night and UGA looked like we had L's on our foreheads.

They pay Heup the big bucks to figure it out. As for me and my house we are on to basketball.
Great post and spot on... After last night, Heup needs to be honest with himself and make changes. I fear that if this coaching tempo keeps up, we are going to stay and tread water at that 8-10 win season and never take the next step forward to the championship level.

Heupel has the plays in hand during the games, he's in direct communication with Hazle. I dont think you can pass on that blame to Halze.
Halze has to have some responsibility. He either isn’t seeing what was obvious to golesh or the development he’s responsible for isn’t there. If he’s just a glorified binocular holder in the pressbox then fire him.
