Recruiting Football Talk VIII

I kind of feel like I'm not gonna see another football championship in my lifetime. SEC or National. Call me soft as hell if you want for saying that, but I've survived some **** in my life. I'm not so sure I have many years left. I felt fortunate to see us win the CWS. I would love to see us win March Madness. But one more Football National title is at the top of my wish list. I just don't see how it's going to happen at this pace when the gulf between us and the truly elite programs seems so wide.

How old are you

Our OL. Coop is worth his money. Not sure anyone else is. Heard may have been a freshman AA at LSU, but it feels like he's been doggin' it here. Karic is average at best. I feel like Spraggins and Campbell have regressed, not improved. Some will probably disagree (Marco), but I feel like Elarbee is a liability.
I think good, consistent tackle play would help the interior guys a lot... Heard and Campbell were very very up and down all year.

They out played us....period. We were playing checkers, they were playing chess. We had no answers for what they were doing and our OL was out matched from the get go. Their offense made our defense look mediocre at best. Is it just a bad game or is it a sign of some real weak spots, everybody has an opinion but the fact remains we were not good tonight.
Just keep in mind that all our loses were on the road this year. Gotta learn how to win on the road.

My dads 56 and said he’d never see one after last night too

As touted as our DL has been, I just don't understand how they get little to no pressure against two patchwork OLs this season. First Georgia, and now Ohio State. I can only imagine how bad it would have been if we were playing their healthy OLs. And Banks compounds the problem by not blitzing to get the pressure his DL can't. As lauded as Banks has been this season, his lack of blitzing is so damn frustrating.

'Patchwork'?

Anyone expecting more than 9-3 just likes to be upset
It's a line of scrimmage game. It doesn't matter how good Nico is if we don't protect him. We'll be replacing at least half of our OL, and we definitely lose our best OL in Cooper. And we lose a lot of size on the DL as well. No more ONL. No more Big O.

Mix of bitter anger and absolute heartbreak atm. We got embarrassed. We looked more out of place than Indiana. This one hurt.

They owned us on both lines of scrimmage. OL kept collapsing. DL going up against a patchwork OL, just like when we played Georgia, couldn't get significant pressure. And Banks once again refused to use blitzes to get pressure. Our corners couldn't cover their elite WRs, and our WRs couldn't get open against their corners. Major props to Nico for giving up his body and running hard. The rest of the team didn't give him a lot of help.

The talent disparity was obvious. Ohio State signs elite talent at almost every position. We don't have that same luck.

Man, this game hurt.
Money will buy nice things

Get rid of Hazle and hire Chip Kelly as OC/QB coach.

That would be the move of the century for Heupel.

Having Kelly work with Nico would be heaven. Chip would use him exactly like Mariota. Only issue would be Chip and Hype maybe having differences over coaching the QBs, but that’s the move I’d make at QB/OC.
Lol no.

Chip Kelly wants to call his own plays
and with ALL OF THE TALENT IN THE WORLD he only averaged 29.9 ppg in-conference this season lol

4th best in the B1G, despite having the most talent by a lot.

I feel like Heupel is at a point now where he needs to seriously consider upgrading his staff to take the necessary steps forward. But I also feel like he's going to make the same mistake Fulmer did and remain "loyal" to his guys to the detriment of this team.
I kinda believe he wants to keep coaches who are familiar with his style of fast passed play. We just didn't have the horses to run that offense this year

And why can’t we at least start blitzing in the second half when we see the front 4 aren’t getting there?

We have to commit to top 3 recruiting and I don’t see that happening for multiple reasons
That has little to do with him.

We haven't recruited average top-3 since maybe the peak 90s. We're talking 30 years ago. Even then it would go #1, #25, #4. It was erratic. We're not surrounded by elite talent like some and don't have a billionaire booster interested in sports.

I mean if you just want a "do less with more" recruiting bulldog, we can go back to Pruitt.

We're closing the gap on UGA, Bama more than we have ever in the past. Heupel, once again, proved he does more with less. Took a 33% playoff team and beat the odds, handily. Took #15 up to finish #7.

Let's see how we do in the next few years with not only ~top 10 talent for the first time under Heupel, but multiple continuous 5* QBs.

We're just scratching the surface.

They were 3 stars that got developed. People around here don’t like 3 stars.
Reality is every team recruits 3 stars, your see something that makes them a 4 after development. Hyatt was a 4 star. We have not receiver talent as close to OSU since Price, Kent and company if ever. The J Swain teams were are pretty good.

This will be the test to see what Huepel’s ceiling is IMO. We’ve got a staff full of GA’s on the offensive side, can’t win at this level with a bunch of amateurs and can’t afford to wait around for them to develop either.
