Recruiting Football Talk VIII

Tim Banks is a great d coordinator when he can rush 4 and get pressure. When he can't get pressure with 4 he's lost. He does fake blitzes like a champ. We were joking and laughing during the game when he would show blitz and back out. "He's gonna send them this time! Nope, fake. He's gonna light em up this time, psych!" 😅
Cant afford to put those CB's on an island. 😐 Cant risk the safety blitz. Would put him in position to make a tackle.

I recall that one play, where they pulled to left, and RB was one:eek:ne with Will. Yikes.

We won 9 games that we should have won. We lost two games to superior teams. We lost one game because we went in overconfident, thus we lost to an inferior team. We won one game against a more talented team (Bama). 10-3 - pretty good season. Lots of teams would have loved to have our season. There is room for improvement, but reality is we need better players at OT. And we need more speed in the back seven on defense. UGA and OSU exposed that.

Oh, there are exceptions to the rule for sure. Cedric Tillman, Jaylen Wright, and Cam Sutton come to mind. Typically though the rule is a rule for a reason.
Will Brooks is a perfect example, played great against the UK and MSST world, was in the right spot at the right time for a pick against OSU, but he didn't belong on that field Saturday night. What he has in heart and effort he lacks in size and speed.
yea you ain’t wrong but recruiting is a little off you got to go to camps and do what they want you to do in order to get ranked. HS Camp Combine results aren’t everything when it comes to on the field results.

go watch that and tell me you don’t think he isn’t an elite football player.

He certainly looks good on film.

I wouldn't exactly say he's underrecruited tho. 4* rated a 92 at 206 in the nation. That's oretty good.

POSSUM thoughts, with @TN-POSSUM:

That game was tough, really tough, but we're heading into year 5 and we have young talent on both sides of the ball. Nico showed me he has the sand to lead this team during the off-season and into next year. Heupel will figure out our assistant coaches and will make player adjustments. Post game, he looked to me like a man fixing to make some tough decisions about his coaches and team. We acted like a team that had never been in a playoff game and literally "froze up". Coming out with our shirts off during warm ups was really dumb. I worked outside (year around) for several years, IT'S 20 DEGREES, put some clothes on and don’t drain yourself pre-game trying to look "tough". Below freezing temps will absolutely wear you out. OUR FANS ARE AWESOME but we weren't on the field. The facts were.... OSU was playing at home, they got focused after the Michigan loss, they played for each other/coach, and they were a lot more talented than us. We've been a weak team on the road against good competition. That face mask call on Eason and then osu scoring quickly (twice) really set the tone. Add in injuries to key players and it was just a beat down we couldn't stop.

The bad: Tim Banks locks up during big road games and coaches scared. I'm ready for him to move on. Our offensive line was manhandled, our upperclassmen receivers are average/injury prone, and Heupel's in game adjustments, on both sides of the ball, have been non existent.

The good: Nico is a warrior, Peyton Lewis is a mix of Jalen Wright/Sampson, and I believe Heupel's offense will look more like 2022 next year. We have young defensive leaders in A. Carter/Telander and some good young pieces around them (Boo, Gibson, J McCoy, Farooq, Hobbs, Ross.) Other than Mayes, Spraggins, Big-O, Will Brooks, and Kitselman, we're not losing a whole lot of senior talent. Sampson would be our only Junior that I'd miss. We will be better next season.

My real concern was losing 2 RF regulars yesterday. Talk about your turn of events. 🤯

@Ulysees E. McGill and @Glitch posts will be missed.....

And the portal will be kind to both of them.....

Great post Possum. I told my wife when they showed our team warming up shirtless how stupid it was. I worked outside into my mid 30’s and cold weather absolutely drains your energy. Requires lots of calories to keep warm. Plus you are disrespecting your opponent and poking an already pissed off bear. Just a bad move. Hopefully our long time posters return when it settles down but you have to admit the recruiting forum seems to be trending the way of the football forum. I get being mad and emotional during and after the game but my gosh grow up and let it go. It’s college kids playing a game it’s not life and death. Things do seem to be calming down today so far.

Are we going to get to the UGA level. Do we spend enough money and recruit well enough?
Yet to be seen. I suspect we will, if Heupel, DannyW and the administration's dedication to sports is any indication.

The point tho is that we are actually ahead of schedule if we're comparing our fanbase's expectations when Heupel was hired.

Just because we want something now doesn't make it feasible. Adults generally understand that kind of thing. Kids annoy the hell out of the world because they haven't learned that yet.

Exactly!!! What I can't figure out is what he thinks he's accomplishing rushing 4 against 5 & 6 blockers consistently. Visual evidence would suggest that against elite teams, only the corners attempt to play tight out of the 7 dropping into coverage. DE's dropping off the line into coverage while rushing linebackers isn't confusing anyone, just disadvantaging the player responsible for pass coverage. And this nonsense of sending a delayed blitz is absurd because opponents respect our DL and don't call slow developing plays, the ball comes out or the QB scrambles about the time the delayed blitzer gets even with the first blocker.

The only way this scheme is going to be successful against elite talent & play callers is to have equally elite talent. But the program wants to reward seniority, recruit cultural fits and not get into the mercenary hiring business; which isn't going to give Banks top 5 level talent. I'm not categorically opposed to those goals, but to win championships without going the $$$ route; we're going to have to be elite at strategy, scheme, development & support. Saturday none of those showed up as elite in our defensive performance. Ultimately, that's on Banks. He lost Pili and J Thomas, but otherwise he's got exactly what he's built over the past 4 years. And while it's good enough to be top 10, it's not good enough to win championships and it's strategically flawed as far as taking that final step.

That’s the entire point of the talent fee but y’all keep dumping on it

Where do we find us one of them billionaire boosters?

Peyton's investments need to do better 🤣

Ergen apparently doesn't care about sportball.

The younger Haslams are the same.

Do we have a cryptobro? Does Elon want his own space program at UT?

DW needs to find us a big spender. Either UT alum or just invite randos and maybe one will catch the Vol fever. Idk, but not having big individual spenders is going to put us behind the TX schools, Oregon, and all the bigger schools with 50k+ attendance with much larger alumni pools.

That's another longterm thing - UT needs to grow its student base.

It’s really wild. All Howard had to do was find a soft spot in the zone and throw to a spot. Pressure speeds him up, but why would we do that?

The knock on the Banks is him not blitzing when we can't get home with 4. The two games this year where our front 4 struggled he never adjusted to light up the QB. The conservative approach is beyond frustrating in those situations.Thats on him and he deserves criticism for it.

Anything outside of that for THIS YEAR is absolutely insane. We were great to elite on defense for the vast majority of the year. If we weren't, we would have finished with 5 losses easily.

This defense only allowed 20 points ONCE in SEC play all year and held SEC opponents to 18.25 per game. In the SEC! Against all P4 teams they held opponents to 19.1 per game!!! That includes the ass whooping from ohio state.

There is still room for improvement. We need better athletes at the safety and LBer spots. But the turn-around this year on defense was nothing short of amazing.

We need to be worrying about how to fix the offense.

He didn’t get the 4th star until he was committed for a long time. Commit boost rankings and de rankings are a real thing. All I’m saying is he should’ve been one of the first players butch jones hits up when it comes to INSTATE recruiting. Ohh also i knew Jalen reeves Mabin was legit played him freshman year in the playoffs ran all over us at the qb and was lights out on d. Hopefully heupel starts getting us some elite players in the future

You and I would be a “great” coordinator if we could rush 4 and get pressure. No one could step up and fill Pili’s spot and the D line lost steam for some reason throughout the season.

Butch should've done a lot of things, but he didn't, and now he isn't here.

And being down by 7 with 3 mins left in the game isn't considered for a blow out or beat down. UGA beat us but that a 1 possession game under 3 mins in the 4 Q on the road. Stop these silly narratives.

I’m not suggesting everything was great because some of you think we have to pick sides. But as I posted before, Howard was the best QB when pressured and elite in man coverage. Could we have done some different things? Sure. But it’s not all that simple. We played man at times, and we played zone at times. I’m going to say the Chip Kelly scheme had a lot to do with it because they ran crossers, and that will kill pressure, too.

I'm listening to the VQ podcast in YouTube..... Hubbs just let out Banks has had a new contract offer for weeks, that he hasn't signed yet.
Well yeah, he's fielding HC positions, he's done so damn well.

After a hot start, UGA absolutly dominated that game. It wasn't that close.
No domination is what we saw on Saturday.

Being up 10 - 0 after the 1st Q, tied at halftime, and down 1 possession with 3 mins left in the game is not domination in any situation.

No need to embellish the facts. We all watched the game.
