Recruiting Football Talk VIII

Not really. It sill exposes how stupid our gameplan was.
We don't want to blitz, but we are going to leave our DB'S 1 on 1 with 3 first round talents at wide out
What gameplan do you use when you have to cover elite fast WRs knowing we have slow safeties and linebackers
Our cbs were actually there and just got beat, it happens
Help over the top wouldve been nice for them but we are slow

Then why are we not running more cover 2, or 2 man.

Or my perfect world, don't give them time to get the ball off. Send 6, send 7 and jump the short stuff.

IMO, Bru isn't fully recovered from his injury last year. I also think that We need to have a look at some of the position coaches (OL, WR, DB) along with OC and determine if we have the right people in order to succeed here. I feel this is pivotal for Heupel to take the next step. That was the thing about Saban if you didn't do your job there were guys waiting in line for the opportunity.
Safeties were coached by our DC
CBS played great this year
Oline sucked outside of center and LT
WRs were just slow, no burners
Goes back to recruiting and development for all those positions

POSSUM thoughts, with @TN-POSSUM:

That game was tough, really tough, but we're heading into year 5 and we have young talent on both sides of the ball. Nico showed me he has the sand to lead this team during the off-season and into next year. Heupel will figure out our assistant coaches and will make player adjustments. Post game, he looked to me like a man fixing to make some tough decisions about his coaches and team. We acted like a team that had never been in a playoff game and literally "froze up". Coming out with our shirts off during warm ups was really dumb. I worked outside (year around) for several years, IT'S 20 DEGREES, put some clothes on and don’t drain yourself pre-game trying to look "tough". Below freezing temps will absolutely wear you out. OUR FANS ARE AWESOME but we weren't on the field. The facts were.... OSU was playing at home, they got focused after the Michigan loss, they played for each other/coach, and they were a lot more talented than us. We've been a weak team on the road against good competition. That face mask call on Eason and then osu scoring quickly (twice) really set the tone. Add in injuries to key players and it was just a beat down we couldn't stop.

The bad: Tim Banks locks up during big road games and coaches scared. I'm ready for him to move on. Our offensive line was manhandled, our upperclassmen receivers are average/injury prone, and Heupel's in game adjustments, on both sides of the ball, have been non existent.

The good: Nico is a warrior, Peyton Lewis is a mix of Jalen Wright/Sampson, and I believe Heupel's offense will look more like 2022 next year. We have young defensive leaders in A. Carter/Telander and some good young pieces around them (Boo, Gibson, J McCoy, Farooq, Hobbs, Ross.) Other than Mayes, Spraggins, Big-O, Will Brooks, and Kitselman, we're not losing a whole lot of senior talent. Sampson would be our only Junior that I'd miss. We will be better next season.

My real concern was losing 2 RF regulars yesterday. Talk about your turn of events. 🤯

@Ulysees E. McGill and @Glitch posts will be missed.....

And the portal will be kind to both of them.....

It’s frustrating reading this board with people wanting more and then being beat down and told everything is fine
Clearly it wasn’t good enough to beat OSU and hasn’t been good enough to beat UGA
So no everything is not good and we literally need better players and better coaching at some positions

Too 10 defense is great but when you beat down weak competition the numbers show good
Had good games against bama and Florida both wins so that’s great but UGA beat our ass and OSU embarrassed us

So yes, development and talent is needed

Same thing on offense

That's an excluded middle fallacy--the logic that either we're the best in the nation and win a Nattie, or things are terrible and we're still in failszville.

The fact of the matter is: Four short years ago we were a program on life support after a couple of decades of irrelevance. This weekend, we competed in the NCAAF playoff.

It's a process. We are further along in that process than we should have hoped for when this staff was hired. They've earned our trust. Of course we need more talent. That's part of the process.

VN needs to stop being spoiled, entitled children throwing tantrums. Embrace the high points of the process.

The reality of the game was.

Ohio State is the most talented and best team in the Country and the only team that can beat Ohio State is Ohio State.

Ohio State lost 2 games one was by a single point at Oregon and probably would've won that game if not the bonehead play by Howard with no timeouts left.

The Michigan- Ohio State rivalry game is always a crap shoot rankings don't mean **** in that game. Probably biggest rivalry in College football those guys absolutely hate each other. The Michigan vs OSU rivalry makes Tennessee vs Alabama look like a pizza party.

I don’t mind a loss…it’s just this kind of sh**t after a blowout I hate..we’re better than this…

We didn’t show up. It’s like we never even stepped off the bus. I heard two Georgia fans talking today. One of them said, “Well, Tennessee embarrassed themselves” and he’s right. We need to make the necessary pruning to grow bigger and stronger.

I mean is he wrong? I didn’t take that as a shot towards us. TN was absolutely deserving of being the top 12. Did we live up to it in this one game? Absolutely not. But the whole product definitely did. Indiana, however, did not show anything that made them worthy of a spot. So I took this more as a shot towards them than us.

Well they did address “first round games” so I took it for what it was..could have just been me

I will say our pregame prep has really seemed to fall off on both sides.

The game was 21-17 for 3 quarters in Ohio State... but that first quarter we simply had no answers on either side. Kelly spent his time attacking our weaknesses and we weren't ready to adjust. Their DC was daring us to beat them on the ground and we couldn't do anything.

But still at 10-3 team...don't need major tweaks, but do need some small changes to get to the next tier. Saban had a staff full of former head coaches doing damn analyst work for him, he knew that was needed to become the dynasty they did.

There is no one on our staff that we have to worry about a P4 program trying to hire away to head coach.

All these CFP coaches this year coached under Saban at one point.
Curt Cignetti (2007-2010 WR/RC at Bama)
Dan Lanning (2015 GA at Bama)
Steve Sarkisian (2016 OA, 2019-2020 OC/QB at Bama)
Kirby Smart (2007 AHC/DB, 2008-2015 DC at Bama)

Heupel needs that sort of support staff. Not just young guys that he elevates within, has to have some guys that are familiar with other offensive philosophies and have success to help challenge him and also help him grow.

Hopefully necks year Banks can figure out away to send 1 player on a blitz in aways games. Else, will be a long year as we are the away team in 2025.

Think you gotta change game plan up on road games to be more aggressive.
I think he tried several different things but this was a horrible match up for us on the perimeter. Their quarterback got rid of the ball quickly and was very accurate. Didn’t have a strong arm but made quick decisions and the right reads. I agree it was extremely frustrating to watch but when he did dial up pressure they either picked it up or he dumped it out quickly. This is coming from someone who convinced himself before the game that we matched up well and our defense would eat. What a total moron I was. Their roster is nuts. Too me the biggest question is how in the heck do you go 10-2 with that roster. If they stay focused they should win the national championship.
