Recruiting Football Talk VIII

I hope so. Right now the puzzle pieces are scattered. Let’s see if it comes together. Can’t afford to lose many more pieces and expect to built back a contender.

The way I understood it was that some pieces didn’t fit and we are getting stronger pieces to replace them.

Mostly in regards to scholarship reduction.

If we OL, get a receiver or 2 and some depth at linebacker I believe next year will be a better year than what we had.

We need to find some good WRs for Nico. OL will take a step back next season, IMO. You don't lose a leader like Cooper and not have a setback.

I didn't know Tim was still around.

Facemask was up, I'm not sure how the rule is worded but this isn't the type of play the rule was instituted to prevent in my opinion.

I'm actually ok not calling that, the helmet was not used as a ram to make forceable contact or as a weapon there.

But depending on the way the rule is written this may indeed deem it should have been a penalty.......... Hope I'm making sense.

Happy Thursday

January 2, 2025: You will have a tendency to get overwhelmed with all that needs to be done to get on board with the new year. You must take one thing at a time, one day at a time to reorient yourself and settle in. Be kind to yourself and others in this process. Ephesians 5:31-32 Let all bitterness, wrath, anger, clamor, and evil speaking be put away from you, with all malice. And be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God in Christ forgave you.

But how many times have they called targeting when it is a shoulder to the head? It doesn't even have to be helmet to helmet to be targeting

I say this because I don't foresee us replacing him with someone better when he leaves. Kinda like losing Golesh.
I agree, which is my primary concern. Normally I could care less, use it as opportunity to improve the staff. But after 4 years it is really evident that Heup likes to promote from within and keep his assistants as he brought some from UCF. He is a culture and fit first guy with both staff and players. Not seeing that as the path to take the next step, which was also evident against OSU and UGA. I think we have hit the ceiling as is. Will see if he has the guts to do it soon.

The coaches make too much money to not view it that way. Now the players are viewing it that way as well. Get better or lose out. Voltello understands and even Barnes took the step at his age. Heup's on the clock IMO. Hope he gets it.

Especially when you consider there's no limitation on coaching staff size anymore. He could augment to the current staff, and minimize any deficiency without actually having to fire or replace someone. Not the most ideal situation, but he could add Co-OL or Co-OC titles and just increase the pool of money for the coaching staff. Really no excuse.

The rule doesn't really allow that kind of flexibility (see below, it's targeting based on the 3rd bullet to note 1). He made forcible contact leading with the helmet to the head/neck area. It doesn't matter that he didn't lower his helmet.

I agree it didn't look that vicious and I could understand if the rule allowed that kind of hit. It doesn't though so I have no idea what the refs were thinking.

ARTICLE 4 No player shall target and make forcible contact to the head or neck area of a defenseless opponent with the helmet, forearm, hand, fist, elbow or shoulder This foul requires that there be at least one indicator of targeting (See Note 1 below) When in question, it is a foul (Rules 2-27-14 and 9-6).

Note 1: “Targeting” means that a player takes aim at an opponent for purposes of attacking with forcible contact that goes beyond making a legal tackle or a legal block or playing the ball Some indicators of targeting include but are not limited to:

• Launch A player leaving their feet to attack an opponent by an upward and forward thrust of the body to make forcible contact in the head or neck area

• A crouch followed by an upward and forward thrust to attack with forcible contact at the head or neck area, even though one or both feet are still on the ground

• Leading with helmet, shoulder, forearm, fist, hand or elbow to attack with forcible contact at the head or neck area

• Lowering the head before attacking by initiating forcible contact with the crown of the helmet

Yup - the old ways no longer apply. Keep the staff that has proven they can get it done and reward them. Add more like them. Same with the players. The preference for always starting and playing older guys who "know" your system has to go. Adjust the system to the strengths of the top talent. System first HC's and coordinators will not last in upper level positions in today's game.

The B10 figured that out after the Bama/UGA period of dominance.

Yeah...Heupel is a sucky play caller...he suddenly forgot how to coach.

Funny how that happens when you don't get great QB play.
And who's fault is that? Nico is his dude. He's had him here for two years. Look, I don't know what's wrong with the offense. It's a shell of its former self. Just like the defense, it's very simplistic. Very little motion. Very little creativity. Very little deception. It seems to be even less than last year with Milton. I've said it multiple times, I'm not one of those that believe the offense left with Golesh. Something is up. I don't know why it's morphed into what it is.

UT - 35
Miami - 7

All the talk leading up to the game was if Miami would be voted National Champion if #1 Penn State lost in the Orange Bowl to #3 Oklahoma (which they did). They really didn't think the Vols had much of a chance against Miami

The Game: Miami scored first using a fake punt to set up a TD pass to future Hall of Famer Michael Irvin and everyone thought that was the beginning of the end for the Big Orange.

However, that was all Miami would score as the Vols brought the pressure of nine-man blitzes and never allowed Vinny to get into the game by sacking him seven times and picking him off three times. The Vols took advantage of those turnovers and good field position to roll over Miami 35-7.

The Big Play: 7:21 in the 3rd Quarter Tennessee RB Jeff Powell blasted through the line and ran 60 yards for a TD that put the Vols up 28-7 and was pretty much the nail in the coffin.

MVP: The UT Defense. They were just all over Testaverde the whole game, giving him nowhere to run or hide. They had a great defensive stand in the 1st Quarter as Miami started on their 13. After 11 plays, Miami ended back at their 13 yard line.

You ask many fans and it is one of their favorite games of all time and people were celebrating all though Tennessee. Fans were packed at the airport for the homecoming and honking horns at the bus as they drove back to the dorms.

Still ranks as the number one game that I was able to attend. I have rewatched the entire game multiple times over the years and it never gets old.

Absolutely no one gave the Vols a chance. It’s one of the best “upset” games ever. The Tennessee DC had the perfect game plan against a team littered with NFL talent and a future Super Bowl winning coach. Makes it that much sweeter that michael irvin wasn’t a factor ( he is a true ass and the epitome of every single thing that is wrong with sports, jmo)
