Recruiting Football Talk VIII

Really overachieved this year too because of how great the DL played.

Games he won I didn't think they would preseason

at Kentucky
at Oklahoma
vs Texas A&M

All 3 of those weren't close either

vs Missouri (especially after Dorktitz said they were still in playoff hunt lol)
at Clemson

But those 5 games changed it from 4-8 to 9-3 real fast. I think Beamer is a complete an utter asshat but he has some good positional coaches and they recruit well, especially for it being South Carolina. Eventually though he'll have to replace someone and the wheels will fall off.

Also this isn't me trying to stir the pot or anything, but the makeup of South Carolina's staff is a big part of how well they recruit, especially on defense.
He does the most important thing pretty well, and that's hire good people to work for him.

Any current coaches getting new contracts in the works/fighting to retain them from leaving? If yes, do any of them rhyme with "Heckler, Spanks, or Flop?"

Are we currently in talks to steal coaches from other schools?

Yeah and I think there's a lot of basketball fans nationwide who, rightfully so, think January is going to really tell us who the Vols are. We didn't get a lot of big tests early (though Illinois on the road looks better by the day).

The question will remain if we peaked too early (*winces*... again?). We will lose some SEC games. Our quality of play will drop over the course of this SEC schedule. This season will come down to our ability to pick it back up in late Febuary and into March.

I think one thing that helps is we had a very light first half of the season. Got long breaks and a short early tournament.

And as an avid fan...the best part is most those fans aren't watching so they don't even realize we've not peaked at all.

Chaz is playing at a very high level, I expect at some point he's going to have a rough game or stretch...but as a team we're not close to peak playing.

ZZ is shooting the worst he has in his career so far from deep with the most turnovers as well.
Igor is a rebounding machine, but he can shoot better FG, 3PT, and FT % than he has thus far.
Felix has more to offer rebounding and defending, early season battling with injury so hopefully he's close to 100%
Mashack been playing better, but the finger injury has set him back really hope he can get to 100% soon but not sure how long that'll take
Dubar is still playing catchup in a lot of ways him missing early set him back, I just hope the staff keeps finding ways to give him minutes so he can learn on the court. He's a lot better player than he's shown thus far but has to earn more minutes to showcase what he can do. I'd like to see him at the 4 with Felix or Igor at the 5 more. Don't think he's quick enough to play the 3 and I'm not sure if that's just him or if missing time has him behind in conditioning/defense so he's playing slower because of that.

Gainey and Cade also playing well.

Stan Brock was the man. He lived about 4-5 houses down the road from where I grew up.

Edit: Also he founded Remote Area Medical which brought healthcare to the needy world wide. When I was learning to be a pilot, they housed a huge DC-9 (I think) at Downtown Island Home Airport. It was a beauty.
He used to work out down at Paschal’s Health Spa in Western Plaze. Never touched a weight…..everything was done on chin up bars. He was a beast!!!

Did the country of Panama ever change its National Anthem to Van Halen’s Panama?
If not, it’s a freaking shame…….

(Yes I stole it from X….i just changed a word to not get banned here.)

I totally agree. If this team gets totally healthy and everyone plays well, watch the freak out. Last year's team was good but this year's team is much more consistent and we've certainly upgraded down low. If Dunbar takes off, goodnight. I think Lanier is as good a shooter and maybe better than Knecht and he is more capable of making his own shot and getting himself open. Knecht had to score and used to work tirelessly to get open and it wore on him. Lanier seems to have an easier time getting open and making his own shot and the team is not totally reliant on him for offense.

Georgia has no business being at #4 or even in the Top 10. From a shear talent standpoint it is 1. A&M, 2. UT then everyone else by a wide margin. It will be interesting to see what the new coach at A&M will be able to accomplish because they have the potential to be a juggernaut.
Let someone else be #1 for the first half of the year, always works out better that way in baseball…. The BooDawgs lost their best player, Ami right? Not exactly a reload and repeat club… I think Texas A$M lost that lefty closer that no one could touch until we did… Much different team w/o him.

Bama isn’t firing KD after 2 seasons unless he leaves on his own. Put him at 1.
Pittman is definitely out unless they have a huge turnaround.
Freeze is a toss up, I’d go 3.
Napier is a 5 for me unless they have a turnaround similar to Pittman.
Smart agreed.
Stoops agreed.
BK is a 5. LSU fans are done with him. Natty or he’s gone.
Kiffin agreed.
Lenny is probably a 4 or 5, similar season and he’s out.
Drink is a 0 but a 5 on “most guy I’d like to punch”.
Venables agreed.
Beamer is a 1 but 4 on “most guy I’d like to punch”, barely below Drink.
Heupel is a 0 even though I understand why they said 1: our crazies.
Sark I actually think is a 1, but if they make it to the final I’d put them at 0.
Elko is a 3 unless they have a good season and beat big brother (ie Texas).
Lea is a 5 because if he has another successful season, he’s leaving for a better job. So not a hot seat, but he’s gone.
Lea isn't going anywhere.......... Unless he's fired.

I think Knecht being here last year is a big part of this year's success.

I know ZZ, Mashack, JP, Cade, and especially Gainey seeing the sort of work DK put in and having to defend him in practice all got better because of it.

I really wish Awaka had stayed put, but seems like he wasn't staying here with Carr, DJ, or Aidoo still in house and 2 of those 3 waited until Tobe was already gone before they changed their minds about being here.

Of Halzle, Abeln, Elarbee, and Pope, I don’t think any of them scream “ace recruiter” to me.

Edit: I liked our TE class this year. Maybe Abeln is a hidden gem, but I’m never sure who actually are the people who do the heavy lifting on these recruitments.
