Recruiting Football Talk VIII

I don't think the Chaz and Knecht comparison is fair to either player...totally different players imo. Chaz was unrated coming out of HS, but has been a 6'4" CG his entire career. His senior year he averaged 23 ppg and shot over 45% from deep. Was named a finalist for TN Division II-AA Mr. Basketball honors with Kennedy Chandler and BJ Edwards even. Helped take his HS team to state quarterfinals 2 years in a row.

But much like DK he had a different path to get to this level. 4 years at North Florida and for 3 years there he played 31 or more games and clocked 20mpg or more put in work to grow his game and now we're seeing it showcased. But that lethal quick release 3 was always in his arsenal.

DK on the other hand was 5'8" as a sophomore, 6'1" as a junior and 6'3" coming out of HS he continued to grow until he reached his current height of 6'6" and with all those changes likely just recently really got filled out and comfortable playing at his size. Like Chaz though dude is a hard worker and gym rat. I think athletically speaking Chaz is better, but DK has put in a lot of work to improve in that area.

I also think Chaz was able to adapt to Barnes defense quicker because at North Florida for the first few seasons that seemed to be one reason he was getting minutes. Cause he didn't really get the volume to put up big offensive numbers there until last season.

Happy to have both, and hope Chaz finishes just as strong in SEC play as DK did. Will make us a destination spot for talented portal players next year.

Any current coaches getting new contracts in the works/fighting to retain them from leaving? If yes, do any of them rhyme with "Heckler, Spanks, or Flop?"

Are we currently in talks to steal coaches from other schools?
There’s a strong desire to retain Banks. I’d be speculating beyond that.

They say it’s because the modern game has passed him by. 😂
Rod Clark and Gainey the Assistant coaches have evaluated Portal talent very well. 2 years Tennessee hit a home run in portal, just wish the youngsters would stick around to be developed under Barnes. Examples, Dillone, Carr and B.J. Edwards.

Kinda feel for BJ a bit, went to SMU to get a bigger role and play for Lanier...then after 1 year Lanier left.

Seems like he's still starting for them though and having a good start to the season.

26 mpg, 9.6 ppg, 51.5% FG, 35.5% 3PT, 77.4% FT, 3.8 RPG, 3.4 APG, 2.2 SPG

maybe a return to the hill for his senior season next year?

Also Ekeler was born in David City, Nebraska...but played at Kansas State, and since starting his coaching career has only spent a total (man is 53) of 6 seasons at a school in the state of Nebraska

1999-2001 at Skutt High School as a volunteer
2008-2010 at Nebraska coaching linebackers

His 4 years at Tennessee are the longest he's been at one school as well, I think he likes where he's at he also was a GA at OU in 2004 with Josh Heupel, so they've known one another a long time.

I think his family loves Knoxville. Only way I see him leaving is if someone offers a DC position

Hope he stays for a long time.

I feel like this is a bad year talent-wise to have the #1 overall pick. And I'm fairly certain the Titans will screw it up.
Agreed. Probably already lining up the Aflac dad and son commercials for Deion and Sheduer. Welcome to the GAP field at Aflac Stadium. Get you a nice pair of jeans and some supplemental insurance while you’re here. Titan up!

I’d like a (better) recruiter for that salary and job.
That’s an interesting opinion. Can you expand?

I’m of the perception that Ekeler is a great recruiter. Also his position groups, Edge/OLB and Special Teams have been phenomenal while he’s been here. I don’t have one bad thing to say about him, so seeing that comment from you is a bit of a surprise.
