Recruiting Football Talk VIII

Honestly I wish they’d go back to the BCS era lol. Playoffs are just gonna give teams like Ohio State second chances when they should be out of title contention. Every week used to be do or die in college football for the mosh part. Now you can take a second Fat L to a mediocre team at the end of the season and be fine.

No thanks. Didn’t want to see UGA in another title game.

Name me 18 teams better that UT. Next.
I never said they should be as low as 19, but I don’t think we’re a top 10 team. And that’s not me bashing my beloved Vols, it’s just being realistic based on who we’ve lost and who we’re returning. And if we are top 10, then we’re 10th, but I’d personally rank us around 12.

Always bring pressure? Neutered-Dame brought 7 guys. Left their DBs one on one. Ohios Tate kept 7 blockers in. This is the 57 yard pass to Jeremiah Smith.

Yeah you can't leave a college level CB on an island with Jeremiah Smith, who is without a doubt the best WR in the country. Gotta have safety help over the top.

But certainly if you aren't getting consistent pressure with your DL, you gotta mix it up somehow.

I recall in Shmmer of 06 reading that David Cutcliffe went to several NFL practice seshes, just to take notes.

I cannot underscore this enough. The offensive play calling in these games has been elite. We are not elite, in this category. People saying throwing to RB is something we miss, watch OSU.

We have to get better.

I agree. Play calling has been majorly lacking in creativity since Golesh left. We are efficient and we still have the ability to score on any play. But we've just become too predictable. Bama literally gave us the blue print to beat UGA on offense, which was to consistently get the ball to the edges through end arounds, designed QB runs, HB tosses, etc. Then, when UGA adjusts and brings their safeties up to help, you throw it over the top. And if you watched the GT game, that is exactly what GT did to UGA and UGA couldn't stop them practically all game.

The last drive of the game for OSU, while a gamble, was orchestrated beautifully. They basically punted 1st and 2nd down with designed runs to lull ND to sleep thinking OSU would just try to run as much time off the clock, punt, and play defense. Then OSU throws a 40 yard bomb on 3rd and long. Great set up and even better execution.

Didn't say they weren't penalties. The point is, they had control the whole game and the only reason Texas was in the game was because OSU kept shooting their own feet.
They didn’t have control the whole game though. Minus the busted screen pass for a TD. They literally had 2 substantial drives all game. The rest of their drives were no more than about 15 yards a piece and some were for negative yards. Even if you account for the penalties, you aren’t “controlling the game” if you “keep shooting yourselves in the foot”. Don’t think any sports outlet said Texas got dominated unlike us and Oregon. Most felt it was a back and forth or battle and that OSU made plays when it mattered.

ESPN (Shlabach) ranks us 19 in their way too early top 25. The disrespect.

So we have a QB that is like 5th in Heisman odds and we return most of our top ranked defense. Yet there are 6 SEC teams ranked ahead us...... this despite 3 of these teams starting brand new QBs.

And somehow the Gators are ranked AHEAD of us coming off an 8 win season despite having another insane schedule in 2025 and a coach firmly on the hot seat.....

Make it make sense.

I think UGA loses 3 games in the regular season next year and I think Bama loses 4 games. Napier will fired before we play UF in November. LSU is probably better in 2025. SoCar looks solid again but they are losing half their starting defense, including their captains.

That's having absolute confidence in your players.

Besides normal growth for Nico and our OL - We need markedly better LB and WR play next year against top competition. That is where we struggled most against our best opponents. We cannot be creative when our recievers are getting no separation. We cannot be disruptive as we want when our linebackers can't cover the middle or get to the edge. We were elite running because our runners were elite. OSU and ND were elite passing because their receivers were elite.

Imo jmo ymmv

I've already mentioned this briefly, but there is so much turnover at the QB position this off-season.

Looking at the top 10 teams in FPI:
1. Ohio State (New QB - First-time starter)
2. Notre Dame (New QB - First-time starter)
3. Texas (New QB - First-time starter)
4. Alabama (New QB - First-time starter)
5. Ole Miss (New QB - First-time starter)
6. Georgia (New QB - First-time starter)
7. Penn State (Drew Allar returning)
8. Oregon (New QB - Dante Moore started a bit for UCLA but not a world-beater)
9. Tennessee (Nico returning)
10. Indiana (New QB - First-time starter)

Our continuity at that position is going to be a big deal next year imo. Add that to a (hopefully) improved WR room and a defense that returns 8 starters and I think we've got a great shot at another playoff run.

It’s genuinely hilarious and the epitome of being a Tennessee fan of the last 20 years that Ohio State just needed to play us to turn into the literal best team in the country.
I'd say it is more likely that losing to Michigan again had that effect.

The result of that game and how Ohio St played just becomes more and more inexplicable as time goes on. I don't even see how it is possible.
