Recruiting Football Talk VIII

A person interviews for a job. They have incredible qualifications. You hire them. They turn out to be the best employee you've ever had, making your company tens of thousands of dollars more than expected. . .

Then you find out they lied about all their qualifications, including college degrees. . .

Is it fahr'n time?
No.

Years ago our company found out that one of our best project engineers had falsified his application, hiding an arrest for MJ possession in his younger days. Management, including me, unanimously decided to ignore that and keep him.

So Ohio State bought a championship, Oregon and Miami basically buy who they want, and players constantly being recruited while at other schools. I love the NIL era, but it can't keep going on like this. Is there anything in the works to keep this reasonable, or are the highest bidders always going to rule?

Have a feeling we are going to see a trend where an elite kid will do really good at one school, get a huge payday from another school and be a complete bench warmer until they get drafted. Not saying they’ll get benched by the coach, rather there will be minimal effort

Did they put in a clause that says, must blitz more?
Don’t care just blitz Georgia next time.
Hate to get in the way of a good narrative but...

2023
Beck against blitz - 124.4 QB Rating
Beck without blitz - 108.4 QB Rating

2024
Beck against blitz - 100.8 QB Rating
Beck without blitz - 97.6 QB Rating

Depends.

Is it a position where a mess up could leave the company in legal trouble and an investigation would find you knew they didn't have the qualifications?

For example, if you have an engineering firm and this person designed some brilliant structures and brought in tons of big contracts but you later find they dropped out before their senior year and never actually finished and falsified their license? If one of his/her structures fails, your company is cooked.

or, is it like a salesman who lied that they had earned a marketing and sales degree and turned out to be a brilliant salesperson with natural talent and soft skills that brought in clients with expert networking and them not having a degree is not an issue?

Either way, you have to contend with the fact that this employee is dishonest. Are they a serial liar or con? Have they lied about other things? Lied about sales numbers and pocketed extra? Etc

I lost you after "salesman" and "lied".

I suppose that comes with the territory there...

(I have friends in sales who HATE the "salesmen lie" stereotype and I love messing with them over that 🤣)
Like in all things, there are good markets and bad markets, good salesman and bad salesman. Sales is simply an area that tends to encourage the worst behaviors, particularly if they are expensive one-off type sales. I deal professionally with sales types who are pretty good on balance (electronic components). Long term relationships and generally people with integrity. (Side note: I do have one Intel/Arrow story that defies reason). But I have had so many bad experiences with cars, furniture, appliances, etc., that it is undeniable the the stereotype is rooted in truth.

News flash buddy… the highest bidders always ruled…. It was just all under the table.

Just so we’re clear, you think every coach that hasn’t made 2 final fours sucks?

What a life you must have to be so prestigious in your career
I dont think the tournament is as random as people think it is, and the great ones have multiple consistent deep runs. Roy, K self, cal, etc..... For being around for so long Barnes should have more than one FF

IMO Barnes problem over the years has been getting the team motivated when they are the favorite. So it has caused a few early exits in his tourney career. When his teams are motivated + his defensive coaching has lead to his stellar record against top 15 teams as was posted recently.

We've talked about this one before...with the exception of K and maybe Roy, those coaches' NCAAT runs aren't as consistent as you think they are. Especially Self (you didn't mention him, but also look up Tom Izzo). And nobody has ever said that Rick is a great coach like any of those guys you mentioned either.

You aren't wrong that Rick should probably have more than one FF given his longevity, but that tournament is absolutely very random.
