Recruiting Football Talk VIII

IMO Barnes problem over the years has been getting the team motivated when they are the favorite. So it has caused a few early exits in his tourney career. When his teams are motivated + his defensive coaching has lead to his stellar record against top 15 teams as was posted recently.
We've talked about this one before...with the exception of K and maybe Roy, those coaches' NCAAT runs aren't as consistent as you think they are. Especially Self (you didn't mention him, but also look up Tom Izzo). And nobody has ever said that Rick is a great coach like any of those guys you mentioned either.

You aren't wrong that Rick should probably have more than one FF given his longevity, but that tournament is absolutely very random.
I think it comes down to 2 main things. Balance and talent. Early i think his teams were too defensive oriented. Now, I'm not convinced he's actually bringing in the talent we need to get there.
Get Berries and Ament for the next class and I think we have a chance.
I don't think DK and Chaz save us is a good way to get there.

The point is with better recruiting & development we wouldn’t need to rely so heavily on the portal. We should grow our own for the sake of long term stability.
Well, on paper at least, HS recruiting has gotten significantly better the last 2 classes, they just maybe aren’t ready for SEC ball yet. Proof will be in the pudding over the next couple years. If those guys still can’t get on the field at all this year and ready to start next year then there wouldn’t be much question it’s a problem

Edit* @Vols410 already said it better than I did

I dont think the tournament is as random as people think it is, and the great ones have multiple consistent deep runs. Roy, K self, cal, etc..... For being around for so long Barnes should have more than one FF
You said he sucks. Nobody compared him to the guys with 5 or more, and Self only has 3.

But again, you said he sucks. Which isn’t even remotely true

The NCAA tourney isn’t random yet Loyola Chicago, FAU, South Carolina, Wichita State, VCU all got hot at the right times. Even forgot NC State last year

Their coaches at those time must have more wins and conference titles than Rick Barnes right? Right??

Lmfao what a joke

Hate to get in the way of a good narrative but...

2023
Beck against blitz - 124.4 QB Rating
Beck without blitz - 108.4 QB Rating

2024
Beck against blitz - 100.8 QB Rating
Beck without blitz - 97.6 QB Rating
I saw the same type stat on Will Howard b4 the playoff game in Columbus. It's not really a matter of whether someone blitzes or not, it's a matter of whether they get to the quarterback and effectively pressure him. Offenses can deal with the threat of pressure lots of ways that result in better QB ratings.

When teams effectively apply pressure, ratings don't actually improve. So how many blitzes Banks calls is kinda irrelevant. It only ultimately matters whether we can effectively pressure/sack the QB. When our game plan for pressure works, we're an elite defense. When it doesn't, can we make adjustments or find creative ways during the game to create pressure?

Our program's strategy isn't to go out and buy the most talent, but rather find the best fits. So a strategy of rolling the ball out there and expecting our best 11 to line up and beat a more talented team's best 11, isn't going to have a high rate of success. Against more talented teams we're going to have to outperform them on scheme & execution. That puts a lot of pressure on an OC and DC to outperform their best peers, in order to win a championship.

All those coaches have done it at college bball blue bloods (Cal’s other FF appearances have been vacated). Wonder if Rick would’ve been able to pull off something somewhat similar at one of those schools.

Since 2011, a 7 seed or higher has made the Final Four 13 times. From 1985-2010, a 7 seed or higher made the Final Four 5 times.

But yes, please educate the class @mr.checkerboards on how the NCAA tourney isn’t random
I never said random runs don't happen, but when you look at the trypical seeds that play late in March..... You might have one high seed and 3 low seeds.

Then quit being shocked when you’re absolutely horrendous, trolling takes get constant criticism. Ignorance is bliss baby
Don’t feed the trolls.

I’m gonna start posting this every time I see a response to this guy, bruin, or sinktothebottom

Brings nothing but clutter to the board. Differences of opinion are great, but obvious trolls, not so much

So Ohio State bought a championship, Oregon and Miami basically buy who they want, and players constantly being recruited while at other schools. I love the NIL era, but it can't keep going on like this. Is there anything in the works to keep this reasonable, or are the highest bidders always going to rule?
Contracts.

That always had to be the endgame. It's just a matter of when.

The sport is just waiting to become a crab like all its bretheren.

People saw OM wreck them and thought they were blitzing...

Nope, that was mostly just their front 4 playing in front of the home crowd.
