Recruiting Football Talk VIII

It’s amazing that Deion was a freak athlete and his kids didn’t get 10% of those genes.
It happens, how many if Micheal Jordan's kids played in NBA or was a bonafide star in College. Same goes for Shaquille O'Neal and his 27 kids roaming around in circles.

I do think it's legitimate to critique Barnes for allowing his players to shoot themselves into a loss.

I really don't care that they are open and I disagree with the belief that you should keep shooting them if they are open.

The players are in their heads, they don't have confidence and they WILL NOT shoot themselves out of it. It literally never happens. If we are cold, we are cold and it does not change during a game ever. Basketball is a momentum sport. You HAVE to go inside when you're not hitting 3's. Especially not 45 of them. It's dumb. Run some pick and rolls, maybe some flex actions to get guys looks inside and get them into a rhythm.

But every coach has some philosophies that just don't work and they won't budge. Allowing them to keep shooting and refusinf to call timeouts when the other team makes a run are his vices. We are still in the greatest era of Tennessee basketball and we can't really complain though. We will turn it around and we will go on a tournament run.

As a football school, I'm taking that all day.
So if they are missing and it is "in their head" that they are missing then the solution is to coach them not to take those open shots. That sounds like a really good way to get them "out of their head" when it comes to regaining confidence!?!? If a shooter has put in the work then they have seen the ball go thru the hoop. They know they can shoot. Rhythm is a huge component of any great shooter. Turning down open shots that you know you are capable of making is not the solution. Shooting percentages is not a straight-line plot graph. It comes with downswings and upswings. Every open look you turn down is an opportunity to start on an upswing. It does mean you will have a game where you miss too many shots and lose a game. Its part of it.

This idea that you can turn down open 3's because you can just "go get shots at the rim" is not real world. It just sounds good. There is a defense that is designing that they are doing to specifically not allow you to get high quality makes in the paint. It is not a layup line in warmups where you just got get an easy bucket.

Honestly, a better solution is sorta the opposite. Part of the issue is they are TURNING DOWN some higher quality looks earlier in the possession and then end up forcing up a lower quality look later in the possession. And why does that happen? Because they are banging their head against a wall determined to get that "easy bucket inside the paint" that you think we should be finding most every possession.

Well the other thing is, they aren't all open. We specifically hunt 3's regardless of if we make them. Under Barnes we have indeed been a live or die by the 3 team.

Plenty of players that are missing shots find their rhythm again by driving to the basket, getting fouled, FT's, or mid range shots, lay ups.

I specifically talked about changing the offensive game plan to run sets that would open up more shots that aren't 3's.

Doesn't matter how you slice it. Hoisting 45 of them is egregious. Especially for an average shooting team. You literally don't have to only take 3's because that's how they are playing you.

Did you see the statscast from the game? I believe it said we shot 38 uncontested 3's. That does mean we took 7 bad shots from 3. I venture to guess most of those were late in the shot clock desperation shots. We need to quit putting ourselves in position to take those. Those are bad shots. Really the only thing that accomplishes at all is we can potentially grab an offensive rebound. Being able to get high quality makable shots in the paint is obviously a preferred strategy. The problem is we don't have many tools to get those looks against good teams. Not with the way they defend us. They can defend Felix with one player. They never help down on him. Nobody else demands a double team in the post. So we struggle to get defenses into scramble rotations. Jamai has no instinctive feel as a driver. Chaz has poor handles and no court vision. The problem is there is not some "other offense" that we can go to that starts getting us good looks in the paint. We better get those in transition and off the offensive glass.

Didn't we recently win the SECT and our NCAA seed did not rise, but lose first round in the SECT and our seed did drop?

Short answer, that's impossible to tell. I'll just say regular season winning > SECT winning has seemed to matter most for seeding in our case.

2018-19 we were a 2 seed, didn't win SEC regular season and lost SECT title game to Auburn (by 20) we were 27-4 to end regular season
2023-24 we were a 2 seed, won SEC regular season and went 0-1 in SECT lost to Miss State by 17 we were 24-7 to end regular season

2021-22 we were a 3 seed, won the SECT and finished regular season 23-7

Reactions: Orange.
I have zero clue if he would have actually helped us...but I wonder how he feels getting about his decision now.

Cade Tyson who by all accounts was 100% a take in the portal.

Last year at Belmont: 32 mpg, 16.2 ppg, 46.5% 3PT, 6 rpg
This year at UNC: 9 mpg, 3.1 ppg, 28.6% 3PT, 1.2 rpg

I mean maybe he wouldn't be contributing for us either...but seeing him buried on their bench I'm curious if he regrets that move. @TrippieRedd might remember others...we missed on, but I know Cade we got on campus and a last minute in home by Hubert swayed him.

6'7" 200lb forward that can shoot from outside would be a big help to our depleted roster right now...
