Recruiting Football Talk VIII

I do think it's legitimate to critique Barnes for allowing his players to shoot themselves into a loss.

I really don't care that they are open and I disagree with the belief that you should keep shooting them if they are open.

The players are in their heads, they don't have confidence and they WILL NOT shoot themselves out of it. It literally never happens. If we are cold, we are cold and it does not change during a game ever. Basketball is a momentum sport. You HAVE to go inside when you're not hitting 3's. Especially not 45 of them. It's dumb. Run some pick and rolls, maybe some flex actions to get guys looks inside and get them into a rhythm.

But every coach has some philosophies that just don't work and they won't budge. Allowing them to keep shooting and refusinf to call timeouts when the other team makes a run are his vices. We are still in the greatest era of Tennessee basketball and we can't really complain though. We will turn it around and we will go on a tournament run.

As a football school, I'm taking that all day.

This logic is as faulty as people critiquing our football team at times as if they are playing 7v7.

UK had a say in what UT basketball could do offensively. It is not as if UT basketball is playing against air. If UK, or any other team, packs the lane and dares the Vols to shoot behind the arch, there is only one solution to break them of that defense. We were obviously incapable of executing that solution at the moment.

There's not just 1 solution though.

The obvious option is you knock down the 3s, we don't shoot the 3 well as a team. Chaz is the only player that shoots over 35% as a team we shoot just under 35% so this is the obvious option but also the one Kentucky (playing percentages) is hoping we settle for and we did and it didn't payoff

The other option is you space the floor and setup 1 on 1 drives in isolation, we don't have the personnel to do this at a high level. Dubar took advantage once, as did Igor and even ZZ a few times had success. Chaz, Gainey and Mashack really should have been able to do this more they often got the best isolations to try it and simply didn't.

Another option is you increase off ball cutting. Space the floor but pass & cut and do it hard every time. We simply don't and haven't really ran this so hard to just start doing it.

Also you can just space out and then feed your big, this was one Barnes even pointed out in post game that he wishes we had done more of if nothing else you want to give the bigs paint touches because if Kentucky tries to double a good pass out of the post creates an opportunity for a late closeout by Kentucky to try and contest and that's when you can drive off pump fakes or even try to get fouls called.

Something definitely feels off about the way Barnes has handled this team during its struggles.

We saw some clear adjustments in the Vanderbilt game that got us back in it. But since then it just feels like we are beating a dead horse and hoping for a good outcome doing the same things the same way.

Barnes forgot more basketball than I'll ever know. And he's said some of the things I know would improve us..... But we aren't implementing them...... There has to be reason, he's not lazy, nor incompetent........ Something's off.

No there are ways to spread the court.

It's not impossible to make adjustments to how you attack a defense.

Do you really think every single coach just throws their hands up, doesn't make a single adjustment, and let's his team jack up 45 3's when they aren't hitting them?

It's been a problem in several games. Like Michigan in the tournament. We couldn't adjust and just kept shooting and missing.

Shooting 45 threes is NOT normal yall. That is a very rare occurrence in college basketball.

Did you see the statscast from the game? I believe it said we shot 38 uncontested 3's. That does mean we took 7 bad shots from 3. I venture to guess most of those were late in the shot clock desperation shots. We need to quit putting ourselves in position to take those. Those are bad shots. Really the only thing that accomplishes at all is we can potentially grab an offensive rebound. Being able to get high quality makable shots in the paint is obviously a preferred strategy. The problem is we don't have many tools to get those looks against good teams. Not with the way they defend us. They can defend Felix with one player. They never help down on him. Nobody else demands a double team in the post. So we struggle to get defenses into scramble rotations. Jamai has no instinctive feel as a driver. Chaz has poor handles and no court vision. The problem is there is not some "other offense" that we can go to that starts getting us good looks in the paint. We better get those in transition and off the offensive glass.
38 uncontested 3's is generous.

It doesn't matter, if they are missing 34 threes....try something different! We just kept running plays to get guys open for 3's they can't hit.

It's just Rick's belief that he should stick with that and doesn't have them ready to do anything else.

You just can't defend taking 45 3's when you are missing them. It's ridiculous lol.

I have zero clue if he would have actually helped us...but I wonder how he feels getting about his decision now.

Cade Tyson who by all accounts was 100% a take in the portal.

Last year at Belmont: 32 mpg, 16.2 ppg, 46.5% 3PT, 6 rpg
This year at UNC: 9 mpg, 3.1 ppg, 28.6% 3PT, 1.2 rpg

I mean maybe he wouldn't be contributing for us either...but seeing him buried on their bench I'm curious if he regrets that move. @TrippieRedd might remember others...we missed on, but I know Cade we got on campus and a last minute in home by Hubert swayed him.

6'7" 200lb forward that can shoot from outside would be a big help to our depleted roster right now...
UNC sucks if kid could play he'd be playing. Carr is the idiot.

Posted this in the basketball forum, but I know some yuns don’t go over there.

Who would y’all like to see if RB were to hang it up after this season or whenever he decides to..

I said the Drake coach.
- Won 4 national championships at the D2 level.
- First season at Drake, 18-2.
- Overall record of 410-93

If KC can make the jump and sign a top 5 class, I’d say he could as well. Give him the resources and see what he can do.

Dusty May ex HC at FAU and now at Michigan. May only making $3.85 million at Michigan, Tennessee can do better than that amount.

His son is actually named Joe (Joseph) King

Thanks for "The Shinning" a light on this. I thought the evidence for this being true would be a little "Thinner" than I would like. I was about to take "The Stand" and call this a "Fairly Tale".

I was completely prepared to make myself "The Outsider" and live the rest of my life in "Misery" for "It".

Oh well "Carrie" on!

I definitely don’t know enough about coaches everywhere. Drakes coach is 410-93??? Good grief. That’s insane. I wouldn’t mind that. That’s the kind of hire I could see White making.

I know it wouldn’t be lonely but I would like to see a big offer made to Nate Oats. He has ties to DW.

Went to grocery store earlier today and purchased a few things. One of the items was a dozen of eggs $6.32. good times..
Because of avian flu concerns, 100 million chickens were euthanized. Gotta let the roosters and hens do their thing…over and over again.

Irrational fear over “bird flu” causing egg shortages. Do you know anyone who has some chickens that may sell you some eggs? The wife is friends with a couple who own a farm. We are getting eggs for $3 a dozen. I just bought 6 dozen last week.
