Recruiting Football Talk VIII

Now lets be fair...he's saying he plans to enter the transfer portal. That's not the same thing as him transferring.

1. entering the portal doesn't mean you're leaving, we've had plenty of guys do it and decide to stay
2. if he enters the portal now he'd be sitting out next season, he has to wait for the spring window so lots can change between now and then

I think this is his camp trying to get him more $$$, why it needs to be made public, not sure. Maybe staff called his bluff, the good news for us would be knowing this now he can be shifted out of the starting lineup during spring camp and other guys worked ahead of him in preparation.

I know that stating he “intends” to transfer isn’t the same thing as transferring. It doesn’t change my feelings about his decision to try and extort us after the transfer window has closed and we can’t as easily find a replacement. The whole thing just feels gross. I’m well aware this is just part of college athletics now, but it’s becoming so nauseating.

@Ericvol2096

Will we pay up, or are we tampering with other corners to get them to portal to us? Looking like secondary needs some attention. Tell your guys to put out the fire.
“We’re tampering with the best of the best”

“Still evaluating, but we should know by the end of the week”

This is the new "business" of college football. It sucks, but it is what it is. Choices are limited. We either pay up, entice some CBs into the Spring portal ourselves, or play with a bad secondary next season. My guess is we pay up. My hope is we don't just say "screw it" and play with a bad secondary next season. McCoy's injury hurt us in more ways than one.

Whole defense got picked on in that game. Includes McCoy as well.
hard to argue with that

even still, i felt he would get lost in coverage at times

all that to say, i thought he was good-not-great, and he's obviously seeking great treatment/compensation. he's smart enough to realize that he controls all of the leverage, given our current roster and mccoy's injury, so more power to him (literally).

sucks

For all the discussion about coaches making millions and being able to leave jobs, this is what is different than the players. At the end of the day, coaches still have contracts that have to be dealt with. They have buyouts or the schools negotiate extensions. Players sign something that only benefits them because they can just get a deal from someone else and move on with no ramifications. It's a mess.

I don't know if they do or not- they have a pulse on the situation. But, there are times you have to play some hard ball. You can't just let players dictate the situation, and we've probably had players leave before because of it. But, there is a big picture to some of this.

we absolutely need collective bargaining and contracts setup to prevent this

Unfortunately, the big picture is pretty ugly if Gibson leaves. I just don't see McCoy being 100%, which means our secondary will be ass cheeks. I'm not against going out and getting comparable CBs in the Spring portal, would probably prefer it, but it would most likely be for similar money, and would require a lot of back-room action to get some in the portal to begin with.
