Recruiting Football Talk VIII

Now lets be fair...he's saying he plans to enter the transfer portal. That's not the same thing as him transferring.

1. entering the portal doesn't mean you're leaving, we've had plenty of guys do it and decide to stay
2. if he enters the portal now he'd be sitting out next season, he has to wait for the spring window so lots can change between now and then

I think this is his camp trying to get him more $$$, why it needs to be made public, not sure. Maybe staff called his bluff, the good news for us would be knowing this now he can be shifted out of the starting lineup during spring camp and other guys worked ahead of him in preparation.
I'm not even sure the portal windows matter anymore. The kid from Wisconsin is currently eligible to transfer to Miami and is winning in court as of now.

He could wait until April during the portal window to leave. Hopefully that's the case which gives us time to get him to change mind.

I personally don't think he leaves. Kid leveraging for a better payday imo. I think we pay at the end of day.

Unfortunately, the big picture is pretty ugly if Gibson leaves. I just don't see McCoy being 100%, which means our secondary will be ass cheeks. I'm not against going out and getting comparable CBs in the Spring portal, would probably prefer it, but it would most likely be for similar money, and would require a lot of back-room action to get some in the portal to begin with.
The big picture is more than just the 2025 season. I'm sure they have an idea of what they can get.

Yeah but McCoy's was moreso with Jeremiah Smith which no one could cover him 1-1. He was solid besides when he was matched up with him. On some other plays, QB threw some dimes into good coverage.

The TD pass to Smith when Gibson was covering him….Tate was lined up outside on the other side of the field. Completely smoked McCoy off the line and Howard could’ve thrown there for a TD as well.

McCoy had just as bad of a game vs OSU as Gibson did. Both were beat routinely.

My only point being that’s not a good game to say Gibson wasn’t good unless McCoy is included in that statement.

I guess we disagree on the importance of next season and needing to keep the momentum going forward. A step back because of a bad secondary would be detrimental IMO.

Another problem with all of this is for the university to spend thousands of dollars on someone who intends to portal in a couple of months. I am sure the school doesn't want to get bad publicity and wants to do what it can to appease the player, but that is totally against what we do with employees as well. Once they intend to leave, it's 2 weeks (or less in most situations) and gone.

I'd let him go. He'll regret leaving. . .
He would for sure since he can't transfer to another SEC school in the spring and play this season...unless that rule changed and I missed it. It'll be interesting to see how they handle it because he won't end up going through Spring practice if they don't work it out and that's not good for his development no matter what he ends up doing. The timing tells me he doesn't want to go anywhere and "his team" is risking him being behind on his development and forced to transfer to a non-SEC school.

I can certainly disagree because there is more at stake in some of these issues than just a season. If you become the school that just "pays up," then it becomes a problem. You will look around and every position group has issues.

Is it strange to anyone else that Dubar doesn’t get more run? He plays well when he is in the game, to my eyes. I wonder if that period early in the season where he was hurt/sick put some weird taste in Barnes mouth.
Poor defense and shoots more per minute than others. He's only shooting like 28% from 3 this year.

Thus far, I haven't been impressed. It looks like he still has a way to go to understand the system, seems a bit slow, and doesn't make the best decisions.

Was about to stay the same. He would have had entered the portal last fall.

Which is why I think he ultimately plays for us this upcoming season. I think it will all work itself out.

It's an issue. Im pro player but damn they have too much leverage at this point. NCAA really shat the bed.
